The Editing of Northern Lights – Six Short Edits and Chicken Scratch

Note: This is the Editing Blog for my FFVII fanfiction Northern Lights (which you can find at the end of that link).  I will be discussing a myriad of topics along with my frequently tangential and harried editing process.  You should be able to garner some enjoyment and insight from this without having read the story and/or without prior knowledge of the original game, but if you’re a fan of paranormal romance and/or dark fantasy, you may find it to your liking.  The story will be spoiled in this editing examination, though I will do my best to mark spoilers for any other narratives I mention.  Thanks for your interest and enjoy!

10/2/14
Welcome back my lovelies.  It was a misty, moisty Monday in my corner of the world, but I was in a rare good mood despite.  I have managed to reach the 100 lb loss mark after two and a half years of trying.  This annoys me a bit as I was hoping to be much further along, but small favors, small favors…

Before and After

Future Narcissist chiming in.  So, yeah…I did lose 100 pounds, but I’ve gained back around 30.  Still a 70 pound deficit is nothing to sneeze at I suppose?  Though I still need to lose about 50 now.  I lowered the goal weight.  I do still mostly look like the right picture where I was around 270.  I’ll tell you.  I don’t care 🙂

I’m more than halfway to my goal and need to “only” lose 70-75 lbs more. (Yeaaaaaah, see above.)  Yes, it’s a lot; yes, it’s daunting, and I need to do it before the end of August 2016. (Bahaha, oh mercy.  I really don’t care about that anymore..)  Why that specific time?  Well that is the last year Otakon (a huge anime convention for the uninformed) is going to be in Baltimore, and I’m planning to attend for the final send off and last hoorah.  It’s moving to D.C., which isn’t terribly far, but it’s still farther than Baltimore (I think).  Of course I’m going to cosplay, and I have a rule about doing fat cosplay (for myself). (…not nearly so much anymore.  Wow, it’s amazing how much more body positive I became in a year…)  I’m breaking it a bit for Halloween since I’m hopefully going as Elsa so long as everything works out.  If it doesn’t I have a backup plan, which I’ve told no one (not even  my husband, and he’s quite vexed about it hehe), but I’d like to pull off the snow queen as she is one of my favorite characters.  Speaking of which I’ve been working on a list of my favorite fictional characters as one of my friends has been doing a countdown on her Facebook page every day.  She has 11, so I don’t think there’s a set number, which is fantastic because I currently have 17.  Can you guess who my favorite character is?  If you can’t, you clearly haven’t been paying attention *wink*

Ah cripes…I forgot that I was supposed to express my opinion about the Hunger Games/Battle Royale controversy from the last post.  I’m going to level with you, guys.  I was fiery hot/passionate about this when I wrote about it the other day, because I’d just had the conversation, but right now I really don’t care.  Ah promises promises…here’s my take.

The 26 Days of Advent: 11/30/15

This is going to be a much shorter post.  In fact the remaining ones should be short (and I say “should” because we all know how long winded I can be).

For the second day in Advent, I decided to go with The Bach Choir, which is must illustrious and lovely.  Many, many moons ago, your Shameful Narcissist used to sing in choirs, and she used to sing such songs as this.  Not remotely as beautiful, but I was involved in such for a good portion of my life and I miss it greatly now :\

Anyway…The Bach Choir has quite a few songs I love that will more than likely be featured if I can find good versions of them on YouTube.  I attempted “The Colours of Christmas” for today and then “O Holy Night” by them, but I was able to find their version of “Silent Night,” which is utterly sublime.

Huh…guess I lied about this being a fairly short entry.

The 26 Days of Advent: 11/29/15

Merry Christmas! Season’s Greetings! Salutations!

Let me tell you all a secret about The Shameful Narcissist.

I

LOVE

Christmas!

Yes, I am a Christmas Goth.  That’s right.  Agnostic, cynical, near nihilistic me loves the holliest, jolliest, cheeriest (beeriest?) holiday of the year.  This…was not always so.  Christmas and I have had a rocky relationship.  Oh quick warning…

NaNoWriMo 2015 Daily Word Count: 11/28/15

I actually completed my thousand words before midnight tonight so they were officially done on the 28th.  So it’s “early” in my book hehe.  I might work on some macros tonight or my WIP video slideshow.  Or I might just watch some Netflix.  I’m pretty tired and my eyes are quite sore.

Today, on the Blackest of Fridays, I didn’t leave my house.

You know I was going to throw up my favorite Black Friday meme, but in searching for it I came across some of the most terrible things on the internet and now I’m more disheartened and disappointed in humanity than even before so I’m just going to move on.

I was able to play some catch up today and get out over 2k words.  These are my favorite lines from this session.  It’s unedited and I’m too tired to do so, but the spirit of it speaks to me.

“I love you as deep as the darkness that fills the emptiness between the stars…and you love me. How you love me…the worst of monsters, because you don’t know that I am. You love an illusion, a lie shrouded in light…and you think I’m a angel. I must tell you the truth, and yet I can’t speak, because I so fear your hatred. I am a coward who now fears the truth when once that was all I desired.”

Chapter 6 – Urban Sprawl

Another chapter title I so love…

Greetings and salutations gentle readers!  I hope all is going well with thee.  As currently, I have actually finished Chapter 6, but as mentioned before I’m a little behind with my blog updates, which is kind of funny to say as none of you will be seeing this for nigh on half a year.  I’m not putting these up until the story is fully posted, and since I plan on doing a chapter a week, and I’m only  a quarter of the way through editing, I’m looking at June before the tale is full told.

Future Narcissist.  No clue what the hell I was talking about above with being finished by June.  I suppose I thought I’d be done at a different time.  *shrug* Who knows?

I’ve been having a conundrum though because I’d like to get it to my betas sooner rather than later, but I suffer from massive self-doubt, and I’m currently terrified that the story is no good and that’s what I’m going to hear, and if I hear anything overly critical/derisive, I won’t be able to finish my edit.  It’s kind of a silly fear, but I’m a pessimist, and while I try to hope for the best, I always expect the worst.  Random note: the song the quote is from just came on my iPhone.  Will get into that momentarily.  Ah, what was I talking about?  Oh yes, my crippling self-doubt.  Yeah, well I decided I was going to finish the edit of the first part and then take the beta plunge.  That way I’ll be kind of removed from it enough to maybe be able to take the potentially harsh criticism that may not even occur.  This how you live your life when you’re a writer with tissue paper armor.

So I was talking about the title, “Urban Sprawl.”  I’m going to be honest with you all.  It is insanely hard for me not to throw more bad puns into this story.  I mean Northern Lights is a serious, sad, and often heartbreaking tale, and while some levity is certainly warranted, I need not go off the deep end.  I’ll try to mention some of the ones I really wanted to use when I get to the parts where I wanted to use them, but I thought “Urban Sprawl” was clever and fitting for a title since Midgar has one of the worst cases of it I’ve ever heard of.  This is way worse than strip malls, ya’ll.  They very earth is bleeding.

NaNoWriMo 2015 Daily Word Count: 11/25/15

It’s winding down, and I’m thinking I’ll finish at over 30k words at the least.  I’m hoping to finish the story itself before the year’s end, but I’m not sure any more.  The most important part of a paranormal romance has still yet to happen, though there’s been plenty of UST.  Granted, I don’t let it go on for too long, because I hate being that hard on my characters.

Anyway…here’s today’s word count.

Finally some progress.  I was able to get some writing done tonight to up my word count, plus get some notes down so I have something to go off of tomorrow.  I did underestimate how much longer this story was going to be though.  I thought I had maybe 30k words left, but I see that I have quite a bit more.  Maybe another 30k; I’m not sure, but The Broken Rose is looking to be nearly as long as Northern Lights much to my surprise.  This is of course before editing, which may cut it down significantly.  I’m still hoping to finish by the end of this year, and I’m also still hoping to get 30k words written before the end of this year’s NaNoWriMo, but we’ll see.  I do have off the next couple of days for the Thanksgiving holiday.

No writing was done today either.  I came home from my jazzercise class and went to bed.  Though I did start reading A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the prequel to the illustrious A Song of Ice and Fire Series, both of which I recommend.  It’s very good so far and shows a world a hundred years prior to the events of ASOIAF and from the point of view of a commoner, Duncan the Tall or just Dunk, a hedge knight.(the link is a bit spoilery if you haven’t read the novellas btw), so it’s an interesting change of view since the “current” novels are mostly written from the view point of nobles at least at the beginning.  I’ll more than likely write a review of this.

Shit…this is a post about my (lack of) word count, isn’t it?
