The Question of the Week is posted every Sunday and will consist of a question followed by my answer and explanation to the same. Some questions will only require a simple answer that could potentially be followed by an explanation. Many questions will be writer oriented, but not all. Everyone is encouraged to answer in the comments and discussions/follow up questions are more than welcome!
What’s your favorite OTP?
Since it’s Valentine’s Day I thought I’d forgo my nihilistic ennui about this “holiday” and post an appropriate question, but first I suppose I should define “OTP” for the uninitiated. I normally just put a link for any odd and/or geeky terms, but I was unsatisfied with what I found. TV Tropes defines it as the couple that a fan or a group of fans prefers above all others, and I…suppose that would suffice.
I find the term OTP itself problematic as it stands for “one true pairing,” which is a very YMMV statement since declaring something so subjective as “true” is bound to start a flame war. I don’t participate in “whose ship is better” debates, because I don’t care whom people ship. If I don’t like a particular ship, I don’t follow or read about it. It’s that simple. Like everything I am more than willing to have polite discourse about the pros/cons, ins/outs of character dynamics, but once it devolves into name calling and mudslinging, ,I respectfully bow out. In short whomever you wish to put together is entirely up to you for whatever reason or no reason at all, and while I’m not wholly fond of the phrase OTP, it’s the simplest way to explain or ask about it the concept.
Now without further ado I will give my very obvious answer of Aeris and Sephiroth.
Since I spent two years writing a novel length fanfiction about them and the beginning of the millennium doing shorts and drabbles in addition to reading all of the worthy fanfiction pairing them that I could find, it’s fairly clear that I’ve devoted a great deal of time to what many people would consider a “crack” ship, but there is a decently sized (and very supportive ♥♥♥) fandom and at one point, this ship was going to be canon. There’s a magnificent manifesto supporting the pairing that endures even to today, not that an OTP should need supporting (as mentioned above) but alas, not everyone takes my viewpoint when it comes to shipping so it’s best to have your defenses prepared.
So Aeriseph is my favorite OTP, but I have another very close second that is more arguably canon though not without its problems. I figure I should do my favorite OTPs in my favorite stories and since ASOIAF is such a close second to Final Fantasy VII there’s not harm in mentioned my love for Rhaegar and Lyanna,
even though there is as much if not more controversy there. I’m of the R+L=J crowd, though I’ve heard some compelling arguments that pokes holes in it, I will persevere with my belief and will continue to do so until Martin himself proves it undeniably false in canon. In any event I don’t believe Rhaegar was what Robert made him out to be; I think Lyanna went willingly (…which could arguably be said for Aeris as well, but I digress into essay/analysis territory, and this is not the post for that), and I think there is far more to the story than what we’re shown. This latter observation certainly holds true for the narrative of FFVII as well.
So what we can draw from my two favorite OTPs? I like beautiful people, controversy, fated failures, “sword and flower” metaphors, and the combination of silver and chestnut hair 😉
What is/are your favorite OTP(s)? What about them do you love the most? No restriction on fandom, genre, medium, or anything at all. If your favorite OTP(s) is/are crossovers (e.g. Elsa and Jack Frost), feel free to talk about that just as freely down below.
I look forward to your answers in the comments!
