The State of the Writer: 8/6/16

<–The State of the Writer: 7/30/16          The State of the Writer: 8/13/16–>

A weekly post updated every Saturday discussing my current writing projects and where I stand with them.  This will include any and all work(s) in progress (WIP) be they creative writing, essays/analyses, or reviews of any type.

Project: Story
The Broken Rose
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Type: Fanfiction (FFVII) Novel
Current Word Count: 273, 963
Prior Word Count: 273,942
Word Difference: +19
Status: Editing
Progress: 1st edit of Chapter 3

Tiara Crown

So I’m super fucking pissed off right now.  I’d just completed this post and was in the process of proofreading it when Mozilla crashed and I lost all of my work.  I’m in the process of importing pictures from my iPhone so computer resources are low.  I have no one to blame but myself I suppose.  So now I need to write everything again because I can’t restore it, and that’s over an hours worth of work down the drain.  I’m probably not going to write out everything I had before, because I’m tired, I have a lot more to do tonight, and there’s nothing I hate worse than wasting my fucking time.  This is why you should make sure you save your drafts.

I haven’t started really editing Chapter 3 yet.  I just updated some writing per my notes.  The tiara picture is not the cover for the chapter, but since at the end of it Sephiroth orders Aeris all manner of clothing and jewelry (since she has nothing), I thought such would be appropriate.  It also demonstrates how the former general is going to treat her.

Quote: “The light dance had ended once Aeris was done and the stars held the sky in their sway.  Sephiroth picked her carefully up, his step as smooth as silver hair.  He cradled the Cetra in one arm, peering about til his eyes did alight.  The slim black laptop occupied his other hand as he carried her back upstairs.  Muted waves welcomed her back to the dim that was lifted by a soft light.  The canopied bed boasted rumpled clothes from her previous fitful sleep, but the warmth of the room brought a sigh to her lips.  I’m safe here, was the strangest thought.”

Project: Story
The Threads of Sorrow
Genre: Paranormal Romance/Retold Fairy Tale
Type: Original Short Story
Current Word Count: 7344
Status: Editing
Progress: Planning

I’ve discussed this story before.  It was formerly published in the online magazine Separate Worlds, but since that’s defunct I can’t even remotely claim to be a published writer, not that I ever really did before.  Editing should hopefully not take that long since it was published and I can’t recall any major issues.  Threads is a retelling of the Snow White fairy tale, but the evil queen is the heroine’s birth mother, which makes it more harrowing.  The “princess” is a priestess and the “huntsman” is a dark angel sent to kill this innocent maid (I have a fondness for that paradigm).  The characters are from my paranormal romance The Serpent’s Tale.  I often put them into different situations and circumstance as in my head they are so intertwined that they’ve numerous shared lives.  TST was inspired and influenced by an FFVII Aeriseph fanfiction I wrote circa 2000 entitled Forgiveness and Redemption, which I intend to reedit and repost at some point, too.  This year is an attempted revival for me though I severely doubt I’ll get to the edit of The Serpent’s Tale itself.

Project: Book Reviews
Active Progress

I scheduled the review of The Final Empire (Mistborn #1) for this upcoming Monday, and I did the preliminary set up for The Tales of Beedle the Bard (Hogwarts Library) for some time this week.  I’m going to cut down on the amount of book reviews I do per week as I’m overwhelming myself with everything I’m trying to do/catch up on.  I’m planning on one Unfinished review for The Girl With All the Gifts.  Since the Mistborn book is planned, I feel comfortable attempting the other two throughout the week.

What are you currently working on?  Is it a creative writing project, essay, review, or something else?  Have you just started something new or are you wrapping up a long term project?

    • Ugh that’s the worst. That happened with me and my first novel The Serpent’s Tale Thankfully I’d written that story all out by hand and I only lost about two days worth of work on Word. While it wasn’t exactly what I’d written, I at least had the bare bones in my notebook.

I have lost entire stories before though. I wrote a short years ago that I still think about and regret not having.

With Northern Lights and the WIP I emailed myself every day. Especially since they were entirely written on Word. I’ll just make sure I save the draft on WP from now on whenever I make significant progress. I normally do that with essays or longer posts, but my State of the Writer is usually a one day write a go, so I didn’t really think about it.

  2. Sorry about the browser crash; I’ve been having all kinds of weird glitches myself since getting a Win10 laptop for school. Makes me wish I’d spent extra for a Mac, which is saying something as I’ve always been a loyal Windows person. Anyway, always good to hear about your progress! And it seems like web magazines go out all the time, so I still consider your publication an accomplishment even if it’s now “out of print.”

    • I was so grumpy. I was also probably hangry hehe. WordPress has been weird lately. A prompt will pop up asking if you want to leave the page as if you didn’t save even if you save. It seems to be on a timer, and whenever I update the menu I get an error message. The menu will update, but it’s just been odd. Hopefully they’ll fix it soon.

    • When I was working on my latest WIP I emailed myself every day because I’ve lost writing before. It’s one of the worst feelings every to put in that much effort for nothing. I’m so glad the technology exists to prevent this, but when it does occasionally happen, it’s rage inducing still.
