The Question of the Week is posted every Sunday and will consist of a question followed by my answer and explanation to the same. Some questions will only require a simple answer that could potentially be followed by an explanation. Many questions will be writer oriented, but not all. Everyone is encouraged to answer in the comments and discussions/follow up questions are more than welcome!
What’s your favorite accent?
Unsurprising to no one who’s followed this blog for five seconds, my favorite accent is the English one, but saying something like that without qualifications is akin to saying “My favorite accent is the American one.” There are numerous English accents. I recently located a video that explained all of the different ones, which was invaluable to someone who was currently using British and English interchangeably. in all areas.
One day I’ll edit my videos or more like upgrade my blog so I can use audio, and you’ll all hear my “video recording” accent. Since I’m from and live on the US east coast and Pennsylvania specifically, we have some very nasal vowels that are entirely not conducive to singing, which I used to do much more religiously until a little bit after college. We were taught to round out our vowels and make them sound more Latin, but I discovered it was just much easier to sing with an English inflection. There’s apparently a connection between musical inclination and the ability to emulate accents. I think I’m okay at it, and unlike many people I actually like my speaking/recorded voice, which makes me worried I sound like a big snob or (wait for it) narcissist.
If I had to specify my favorite British accent, I think it would have to be Received Pronunciation. During a wiki walk a while ago I stumbled upon the concept of the rhotic R, and everything about English accents just came together for me. Knowing about that, I could also attempt to hone my emulation.
If anyone from the UK is reading this, please know I’m a total anglophile, and mimicry can be considered the sincerest form of flattery. I don’t attempt this for mockery or the like, especially since I’ve experienced bullying and detest cruelty in all it’s forms. I do love talking about accents though and what defines/differentiates them.

Yasss I love the Scottish accent. Haven’t read or watched Outlander yet. It’s on my list though! I’m a fan of the 10th and 12th doctors’ accents though David Tennant (10) toned his down quite a bit for the role. Peter Capaldi just let the Glasgow inflection fly and it was wonderful.

I’m probably one of the few who has not tried Dr. Who yet. Not that I’m not interested, I just don’t know if I need another obsession lol.

Don’t do it!!! It’s very addictive if you like that kind of thing. I started with the reboot from 2005(?). I haven’t seen any classic Who yet, though I want to. My favorite is David Tennant as the 10th, but I enjoyed Chris Eccleston as 9 (and the Doctor who starts off the reboot), and Capaldi as 12 is a very close second! If you do watch it, you have to let me know what you think 🙂

Hmm, for me, it’s a toss-up between English and Irish.

I love the lilt of the Irish accent. I may be completely wrong with this in terms of whether it’s Irish or not, but Evanna Lynch who plays Luna Lovegood has one of the most adorable, breathy ones I’ve ever heard. I could listen to her speak all day.

Scottish is my favourite. The province of Canada I live in is called Nova Scotia, which mean “New Scotland” in Latin, I think. That’s probably a factor.

My favorite singer/songwriter is from there! Well…she’s not so much anymore, but when I was in high school I was all about Sarah McLachlan. I still listen to her older stuff, and Full of Grace is arguably my favorite song ever.

“Give over our kid, we know you don’t mean owt by it!” A bit of typical Mancunian for you! I adore the Welsh accent, it’s so drawn out it always sounds like they’re telling a story!

Yasss I pretty much love any accent from that part of the world. Welsh makes me think of Iwan Rheon who plays Ramsay in Game of Thrones. I had to look up how to say his name, because I was mucking it up big time.
I’m currently watching a Let’s Player from the UK and I love his accent and super upbeat attitude. The turns of phrase are just fantastic.

British accents are a major favorite of mine. They’re one of the biggest factors as to why I love the United Kingdom so much (And in case you’re wondering, one of the other biggest factors is that more than a handful of my favorite games/movies/shows come from or were made in it. They’ve really got some serious talent in the entertainment department).

The really do. I’m Doctor Who, Sherlock, and Downton Abbey fan among other things, and my favorite actors are English as well: Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Patrick Stewart. They’re all Shakespearean trained, and it definitely shows!
