The State of the Gamer: 11/1/16

<–The State of the Gamer: 10/25/16          The State of the Gamer: 11/8/16–>

A weekly post updated every Tuesday detailing my current gaming projects.  I have quite a backlog of games to either play or watch, and I’m hoping a weekly article will assist with my progress as my other accountable posts have done with reading and writing.
I have an account at Grouvee, which is a essentially Goodreads for gamers, so please feel free to friend me there!

You know if I’m going to play a Final Fantasy on a handheld I should be playing Dawn of Souls or FFIII.  That would make the most sense since I want to play/review those anyway, and I can do it alongside the main numbered games, but nah, I’m replaying IV again because I’m ridiculous.

I just finished Mt. Hobs and my next stop is Fabul.  I am further along in my story recap for the IV review than I am in this play-through so that’s…something I suppose.

Title: New Super Mario Bros.
Series: Super Mario
Genre: Platformer – Adventure
Developer: Nintendo
Original Platform: Nintendo DS
Original Release Date: May 15, 2006
Date Started: October 24, 2016

I haven’t played this as much this week, because I’ve been finding myself in some difficulties with the game.  It’s a bit harder than the last Mario platformer I played, and the titular plumber seems to either be wearing slippery shoes or those platforms are a lot more slick than they look.  I tend to slide a lot, therefore sliding off into pits.  I also wish you could save whenever you wished instead of having to save after spending coins to open a locked door.  So while I don’t have much game time clocked, I do have critiques.  Never say reading my posts is futile 😉

Games Currently Watching

Title: Mass Effect
Series: Mass Effect
Genre: Action RPG – Sci-Fi
Developer: BioWare
Original Platform(s): Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3
Original Release Date: November 16, 2007
Let’s Player: Olizandri
Date Started: September 29, 2016

Oh man things are getting to spicy for the pepper as our irrepressible let’s player heads towards the end.  A fatal decision was made (at the point in the game where a fatal decision had to be made), and this Shepherd chose *spoiler* Ashley *end spoiler* for the chopping block instead of *spoiler* Kaidan *end spoiler*.  To be honest I think I would’ve made the same decision, but I would’ve gone a different route in the romance.  Olizandri decided that his Shepherd was more career focused and less love inclined, but he did say he’d prefer someone with Wrex’s personality, and I wholeheartedly agree with that.  Personality-wise I think that would be a good match, though I can’t even remotely imagine (nor would I want to) how human-krogan carnal relations would work.  Ew.  I would romance Liara or possibly Tali (if she’s an option).  I like the way the latter says “Saren.”  It’s almost like she’s saying the “r” as a “d.”  It’s a sweet accent.

Whom would or did you pick in your Mass Effect romance?

Games Added to Play List: 5

  1. Final Fantasy IV – I just can’t get enough of this game, can I?  I added the PSP version to my list because for some God only knows reason, it wasn’t there.
  2. Drill Dozer – thanks to Matt for reviewing this on his blog Nintendo Bound!  I added the game after reading it and making (what I thought was) a witty quip about its similarities with Dig Dug.  Either way, you should check out the review and think about playing it yourself.
  3. The Legend of Dragoon – this is one of those times where I need to kick myself for forgetting who I was discussing this with.  It was a fellow blogger, and the conversation prompted me to add this.  I believe we were talking about the game in the number 4 slot and this came up alongside.  Ack, if you remember the conversation feel free to identify yourself in the comments.  I’m terrible at source information.
  4. Breath of Fire III – this game seems as illustrious and epic-worthy as my beloved Final Fantasies.  I have no issues playing RPGs outside of my favorite franchise, especially seeing as Grandia II is one of my favorite non-FF games.  I’d mention the Chrono Series, but since it’s also by Squeenix, it doesn’t really count as completely outside of FF.
  5. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night – none other than the Well-Red Mage encouraged this add.  Initially, I just had it on my To Watch list, but then I remembered I love platformers and RPGs, and this is the best of both worlds with the beautiful Alucard for bonus.

Games Bought This Week: 0

Erm, well it’s been about a week since I purchased World of Final Fantasy and no I haven’t played it yet.  I was even out sick today, but didn’t crack it open, probably on account of being sick/not feeling well.  Here’s hoping I get to play it tomorrow so I can make a report to you lovely bloggers next week.

Note: Picture of Alucard is entitled Dreaming Alucard and is by Deviant Artist Candra.  Picture source is in the link below the image.

What are you currently playing and/or watching? Is it something new or old?  Is it a first time run or a replay?  What’s the genre?  Would you recommend it?  What’s on your radar to play next?

  2. In both of my ME playthroughs I romanced Liara, because aliens. In one, I was loyal to Liara in 2 and 3, but in the other I went with Jacob in 2.

I remember bringing up The Legend of Dragoon, but we definitely didn’t have an in-depth conversation about it. Could have been someone else!

Symphony of the Night and Breath of Fire III are both incredible games. And on Vita.

    • Yep I’d go for Liara, too. Maybe Tali.

I think it might have just been a mention, but I’m terrible at source info. That one’s on my list, too, and I was just saying to Mr. Panda how I wish I’d bought a Vita before. It’s so versatile and seems to have a ton games and ways to play them.

      • Between most of the indie games on PS4 and PS3 being cross-buy for Vita, and a massive collection of PS One Classics, it’s a solid investment =).

As soon as I saw I could romance an alien, I knew that’s what I wanted to do. I love Tali’s character, but Liara was Liara. There was no question, lol.

        • I seem to have a thing for aliens (or partial aliens), too. No judgement here and I definitely feel the draw of Liara. I was, well not annoyed because it’s his game/LP, but I really was hoping he’d romance Liara. There’s such an allure about her.

    • See I love that because no one who’s not a nerd would think anything of it. Not that it should matter if they do. See my BFF wants me to name my first son Gabriel Sephiroth because I told her I wanted to name him Gabriel Seth. She’s threatened to be in the room when I’m writing the birth certificate and all drugged up to convince me to just change one and add those extra letters. The messed up thing? She’s almost half convinced me. I mean who the hell will know unless they find out his middle name lol.

      • Ha! That would be a pretty sweet name. (I forgot to mention that the same person’s bird is named Sephiroth.) Another friend named his second son Parker Peter and his first son Logan but I forget the middle name. Another named their daughter Zelda. It’s so easy to get creative with nerdy stuff lol.

        • My friend has two cats named Cloud and Sephiroth! Sephiroth is a total dick to Cloud, too bahahah oh mercy…

My one cat is Cid and the other is Kin-mei, which while not Final Fantasy related is still Japanese.

          Robin Williams’s daughter is named Zelda. He was a huge LoZ fan ;_;

I 100% agree and you can do it in a way that only other nerds will know the code hehe.

            • I can’t even imagine. I love them, too, but I think they have a high prey drive and wouldn’t be good around cats. If I got one and he had those blue, blue eyes with typical husky markings, I’d name him Zack because Zack is totally a puppy lol. I’d love a bulldog or a Basset Hound. I’ve seen pictures of those puppies and I can’t even deal with it.

    • I just started playing another one *hides* I FINALLY got time to fire up World of Final Fantasy and I absolutely love it. I’ll be gushing about that on Tuesday unless election madness swallows me whole. :O

This is truth! And since I’ve broken my “go in order code” for Final Fantasy, I can bump up a game with a certain same awesome voice actor. I’m thinking like books I can play games on different consoles. My husband is currently over a friends house doing this charity event called Extra Life where you play any game, video or otherwise, for 24 hours straight. It’s for a great cause and he does it every year. Thankfully this one he left his PS 4 so I get full access hehe. I actually just updated my PSN account. I should do a post about that to let people know if they’d like to friend me 🙂

      • I had a serious problem with starting games and then never finishing them. I’ve limited myself to 3 games on the go at the same time. Now I just have 3 games I haven’t been playing, lol

Glad to hear FF Cute is good! I’ll get it eventually I’m sure. How many times have you used the Sephiroth summon so far? Be honest now 🙂

Awesome! I hope you get to start it soon. I’d really like to read your opinions on the game. The good thing about Final Fantasy games is that each one is set in a different world, excluding direct sequels of course.

Extra Life is such a wonderful thing! Fun hobby or not, doing anything for 24 hours straight is a huge challenge. Props to your husband for undertaking this! My PSN ID is: Adawong15 if you want to add me. Before I met Lightning, teenage me looked up to the badass Ada Wong from the Resident Evil series. It has actually been a couple weeks since I powered my PS4… sigh. I need more time! The hour I got back from the time change this weekend isn’t enough…

        • I actually haven’t used him at all! I don’t think I’m at the point yet when I can but when I can oh boy lol. I absolutely love that you can have the voice acting in Japanese with English subtitles. It’s literally like playing an anime. I’m glad they have that option , because Cheap Boss Attack said that this one character Tama has the most annoying voice ever, and I could see that. It’s much better/bearable in Japanese.

I added you! And no that hour isn’t doing much for me either. I’m glad it’s only 3:30 and my cats are giving me the “Why haven’t you fed us?” death glares (they get fed at 4:00), but still so much left to do!
