The State of the Writer: 1/29/17

<–The State of the Writer: 1/19/17          The State of the Writer: 2/5/17–>

A weekly post updated every Sunday discussing my current writing projects and where I stand with them.  This will include any and all work(s) in progress (WIP) be they creative writing, essays/analyses, or reviews of any type.

*I moved the State of the Writer post to Sundays.  Three State posts during the week was too much.  Saturdays are my essay writing days, so I figured Sunday could host a State post.*

Project: Story
Title:
The Broken Rose
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Type: Fanfiction (FFVII) Novel
Current Word Count: 276,905
Prior Word Count: 277,027
Word Difference: -122
Status: Editing
Progress: Organizing Chapter 8 notes

I found my errant “your,” corrected it to “you’re,” and continued along the path of literary righteousness.  I did some minor edits on Chapters 4-6, but didn’t completely reread Chapter 6, since I did a very thorough edit prior. The note sorting has been completed.  The next part is deciding which to keep and figuring out where they go.  That will be the goal for this week.  Hopefully soon I’ll start the actual edit

Quote: This tiny maid who’d been so abused was now dripping in luxury.  She slipped on flat shoes as white as her skirt, adorned in white ribbons as well.  Maybe they’d go out to greet the great sea.  Aeris wasn’t sure due to the rain.  Either way she figured she’d complete her dress since she’d put on everything else.  Gazing down at the two strips of white in her hand, the little maid’s lip trembled hard.  She wished she could remember how to bind her own hair as it cascaded down in chestnut waves, but her fingers just fumbled among the soft strands, leaving her only with tears.

Project: Essay
Title: Half a Tragedy Is Worse Than Whole
Subject: FFVII Comparative and Meta
Current Word Count: 1436
Prior Word Count: 1436
Word Difference: 0
Status: Drafting
Progress: N/A

tragedy-2

No progress this week.  I have a ton of book reviews to do (and completed one this week).  I’m hoping to work on the essay next Saturday.  I made myself a deal that when I finished it, I’d make my appointment for my next tattoo.  Since I’m planning to get it for my birthday, there’s a (reasonable) deadline to make.

Project: Book Reviews
Title: A Court of Thorns and Roses & The Raven Boys
Status: Planning

I initially had four reviews to do, but I completed Tuf Voyaging yesterday and decided not to do one for In the House of the Worm. I rated it on Goodreads, but while it was interesting, I’ve read and listened to enough reviews that I didn’t feel I had much more to add besides pointing out yaga-la-hai sounds like yog shothoth (at least in the first syllable), and the tunnels they live in are reminiscent of the ones where the Children of the Forest dwell in the north.  There’s a great review by Preston Jacobs here, and there’s another review of Tuf by Vassals of Kingsgrave here for the interested.

I plan on writing the reviews of Throns/Roses and TRB this week.  One of those reviews will be glowing; the other, not so much.

What are you currently working on?  Is it a creative writing project, essay, review, or something else?  Have you just started something new or are you wrapping up a long term project?

  2. My brain misuses your and you’re all the time. Don’t get me started on their, they’re, there, either. Why is English so damn confusing? Oh and I cannot (or is it can not?) forget its and it’s, to and too….The list goes on. Grammar is not my friend, lol.

What are you planning to get for your new tattoo? That’s a great way to bribe yourself! 🙂

    • If I’m writing/typing too fast, I’ll use the wrong one which is why I always try to proofread hehe. I…think it’s supposed to be cannot? Or maybe cannot and can not are interchangeable? I have no idea what the difference is!

I create my own grammar. We’re writers. We do what we want :p

I’m going to get “Ne me mori facias” a line from One Winged Angel that means “Never let me die” on my left arm under the 7 on my wrist. It’s my second to last tattoo as my sixth. The seventh is going to be quite a doozy I need to save up for. Speaking of tattoos, your date is coming up soon 😀

      • That sounds like an awesome tattoo! Your seventh one sounds interesting. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that you are only getting VII tattoos 🙂

I’ve been saving up for mine ever since I beat FFXIII. I really can’t wait until it’s finished, or even just to see what the final design will look like. I’m way too excited/scared!! 😀

    • I think it is! I’ve also been super lazy about going down to the tattoo place. It’s about 30 minutes away, but I love the tattoo artist. He’s done all of the work I have, and I’ve also been knocking around the idea of a lip ring, but I don’t know what my job would feel about that.

I’m going to get the words “Ne me mori facias” (Never let me die) on my left arm underneath the 7 that’s already there! The words are from One Winged Angel from Final Fantasy VII whose lyrics are actually from Carmina Burana. Latin is my favorite language to sing in even though I never studied it but wish I did!

Tattoos feel…interesting lol. I can’t say it’s not painful, but I was expecting it to be a lot more painful than it was when I first got mine. The area also makes a BIG difference. If you get it over a bony part, it hurts a bit more, and places where there are tendons can be tender. My wrists were painful, but very quick. Afterwards, people have told me it feels like a slight sunburn, and it gets itchy, but you don’t want to scratch it. If you go to a good artist, they’ll be frank and upfront with you about how painful it’s going to be if you ever decide to do it 🙂

      • Nice, that sounds cool. 🙂
A lip ring would be nice too. It’s too bad so many employers are so negative about piercings, tattoo, and hair color a lot of the time. :/ Hopefully yours would be okay with you getting it though!

    • Omg, I’m so terrible at making the appointment, ,because it involves driving like half an hour, but he’s the best tattoo artist, and I can’t “cheat” on him lol. It’s even worse than cheating on your hairdresser. In that case the “evidence” doesn’t last forever :p

      • Well at least you found a good tattoo artist! I kind of find myself bouncing around a bit. I went to the same place for several years, but it kind of turned me off when I noticed it sort of was a revolving door for tattoo artists. Haha yeah the evidence of your cheating would definitely be permanent! 🙂

        • When you see artists coming and going you know it’s probably not a good place for them to work, and I’ve found people do better work when they’re happier. My guy owns his own place and has been doing it for at least a decade. It’s tough to find a good, reliable artist, so when you do, you want to stick with them.

          • Yeah that is definitely true! There was actually one guy there I really liked and he did a really bad ass skull tattoo on my right ankle. Around a year or so later I went back and asked for him and they were like “oh, he doesn’t work here anymore” and proceeded to talk shit about him. It was really weird! That’s good that you founnd such a reliable guy, though. The last tattoo I got was last May, and I really loved the girl that did it- so even though she moved and works a little ways from me now, I will probably go back to her 🙂

            • Oh man that sucks! I know there can be a LOT of drama in the tattoo world. Anything that involves artistic talent usually involves drama unfortunately. I think it’s because it’s so competitive.

That’s how I feel! I live about a half hour away from my artist, but I’ll gladly drive out there. I made the mistake of getting a piercing from a place I didn’t know that well. It was a transversal, and they pierced too close to the edge and it pulled through the skin. It didn’t hurt, but now I have a chip in my ear like a alley cat that’s been on the losing end of a fight lol.

              • That’s true, there is a lot of drama. I’ve seen a couple of those tattoo reality shows and it was mostly drama with very little tattooing going on! Ahh sorry about your transversal piercing! It’s funny, because the same shop that I said has a revolving door of tattoo artists actually has a really great piercer, and everything is really reasonably priced! My rook piercing was only $40 and he did an excellent job!
