The State of the Gamer: 2/28/17 (& the Results of Four in February)

<–The State of the Gamer: 2/21/17          The State of the Gamer: 3/7/17–>

A weekly post updated every Tuesday detailing my current gaming projects.  I have quite a backlog of games to either play or watch, and I’m hoping a weekly article will assist with my progress as my other accountable posts have done with reading and writing.
I have an account at Grouvee, which is a essentially Goodreads for gamers, so please feel free to friend me there!

I’m right in front of the Dwarf King’s Castle in the underground.  I haven’t gone in yet, because you’re pulled into a mandatory fight with some wooden dolls.  It’s not a difficult battle, and the music is amazing; I just haven’t had the time to do it yet.

Let’s see…I fought and caught the three “dark” Mirages of Shiva, Ifrit, and Ramuh or rather their little versions.  They all come with mementos for the other transfigurations, so I caught another Fritt, Bablizz, and Zapt respectively, but I need one more of each so that I can have one Mirage for each transfiguration.  I also attempted to fight the optional boss XG (which I’m pretty sure stands for “Xenogears”), but lost.  I looked up a guide for how to win “easily,” so I think I’ll try again tomorrow and report next week on my results.

Original Platforms: PlayStation 3
Original Release Date: March 13, 2012

No journeying this week either.  I promise I’ll pick it back up again, especially since I’m close to completely done with WOFF..

I did remove Dawn of Souls since it’s been over a month since I’ve played it.  I was going to concentrate on the II part of DoS, but I decided against that, too.  FFII has my least favorite leveling system, and though I’m curious if they improve upon it in that iteration,

Title: Ys: The Vanished Omens
Series: Ys
Genre: Action RPG – Fantasy
Developer: Nihon Falcon
Original Platform: Multiple
Original Release Date: June 21, 1987
Let’s Player: Hungry Goriya
Date Started: February 13, 2017

I watched the latest update yesterday and geez did HG tackle a difficult dungeon.  Ys seems to have a very steep learning curve or rather it makes areas available that are way above your level, but you’ll often need to traverse them for necessary items.  Later, the area will have to be formally conquered, but the first time through, it’s more of a snatch and grab.  I’m pretty sure this is why they made the music so epic.  The game designers knew you’d face arduous trials and wanted the player to have some sort of compensation.

Title: Mass Effect III
Series: Mass Effect
Genre: Action RPG – Sci-Fi
Developer: BioWare
Original Platform(s): Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3
Original Release Date: March 6, 2012
Let’s Player: Olizandri
Date Started: January 23, 2017

The next episode had Wrex, Grunt, and Mordin.  Happy reunions all around!  The let’s player is also canny enough to bring Liara and Garrus along so that all the old crew can reconnect.  The resources for the war effort are looking really good for this LP, and I’m curious what Olizandri is going to choose for his ending.  I do have to say, I absolutely hate the sound the Reapers make when they enter a system you’re in (if you alert them to your presence).  I abhor “chase” horror, and that’s the epitome of it D:

Four in February

So how did I do?  Well, I had seven games on my original list.  Let’s go through them one by one.

  1. World of Final Fantasy – Finished.  Still playing it for the post-postscript, but I consider this a completed game.  Now, I’m not sure if it doesn’t technically count since I didn’t start and finish it in February, but who’s really going to be that technical.
  2. ABZU – Didn’t start. I neither started nor even downloaded/bought this one.  Maybe next year, I’ll make sure I pick games I already have *shrug*
  3. Cthulhu Saves the World – Didn’t start.  Same as ABZU.
  4. Inside – Watched end.  I played quite a bit of it, watched my husband play more, and then I watched the ending in a let’s play.  I started it in January, so it may fall under the same “technicality” as WOFF.
  5. Journey – Started; still playing.  I only actually played this one, because I was mostly focused on WOFF.  There was also my issue with the camera angles.  I’ll probably finish this in March.
  6. fLOw – DNF.  I played one session of the game and decided it wasn’t my cup of tea.  I consider this like a DNF book.  I don’t know if it really counts to my overall total, but I’m finished with it.
  7. I Am Setsuna – Didn’t start.  I do own this one, but I didn’t play it at all this month.  I was kind of playing three RPGs and a fourth would’ve been a bit too much.  This is definitely in my next five RPGs to play though.

Considering I finished a game I’ve spent around 200 hours on, watched the end of one I played at least half of, and declared one DNF, I’d say I did pretty well 🙂

What are you currently playing and/or watching? Is it something new or old?  Is it a first time run or a replay?  What’s the genre?  Would you recommend it?  What’s on your radar to play next?

  2. Congrats on coming close to accomplishing your 4iF goal. That’s all that really matters! It’s motivation to focus on games you already own that have been neglected, and you did exactly that.

I know you’re watching the Mass Effect trilogy as an LP, but if you’re interested in playing it for yourself, the entire trilogy is only $4.50 on PS3 this week! Hell of a deal. ABZU is also 60% off I think, if you’re still interested in picking that one up. Cheap plug (attack?), but I just posted about this week’s PlayStation Store sale.

Right now I’m juggling Neverwinter on PS4 whenever my girlfriend is preoccupied, and World of Warcraft on PC when we have time to play something together. We’re leveling new characters on our regular server, since MMOs are our comfort food whenever life gets a little too stressful. Between school, the truck, and everything else, we’re at that place right now lol.

I did pick up The Bunker on PS4 today though, since it was 70% off. Looks neat. It’s an FMV horror game where you play as the only survivor in a nuclear bunker. I hear it’s relatively short, which is perfect. Might even start it up tonight.

I’d *really* like to pick up Horizon: Zero Dawn and Torment: Tides of Numenera, which both released today on PS4. Realistically, I don’t have that much free time. It’ll be hard to avoid picking up Zelda on Wii U this weekend as well (since I cancelled my Switch pre-order).

  3. Your WoFF accomplishments sound so intense! I don’t even know the names you’re mentioning anymore, but it’s awesome that you’ve enjoyed it so much to put in that much time into it! Also, it would be awesome if the boss really were Xenogears!

Congrats on your Four in February! I feel like 200 hours on a game is well-worth four games! That happens to me a lot where I could be playing four other games, but instead spend so much time on a game I love so much. I never regret it when I do. That’s the case with Pokemon Moon for me, which I’m still playing. I finally got a consecutive 50-win streak with my newly trained doubles team, and I’m so happy about that. I feel like I’m finally ready to move on and play Switch! I’m also still playing Super Mario 64, and now a little bit of Super Mario 64 DS, for reasons. 😉

    • The boss was totally designed by the person who did Xenogears! I paused the video I was watching when the description came up and that’s what it said lol. I’m actually going to try to beat/capture him again tonight using the strategies in said video, but we’ll see what happens.

Hm, I wonder what those reasons are :p I’ll keep my speculations to myself so I don’t ruin the surprise.

  4. I remember that fight in the Dwarf Castle! I’m so glad I was following a guide so I was prepared, haha.

Nice effort on your Four In Feb! I’m so liberated now that I’ve thrown out all my gaming goals. I play what I want, when I want to. This care free attitude is making me enjoy this hobby again 🙂 I’ve abandoned everything I was working on for Horizon Zero Dawn, which came out yesterday. Loving it and Lightning is actually in danger of being overthrown as my favourite character by my newest shero: Aloy. Time will tell, but I suspect Lightning will win in the end, haha. It’s so great that the industry is making better female characters these days.

Oh and 200 hours in anything is impressive! I’ve spent 300+ hours in the entire FFXIII trilogy.

    • You should enjoy the hobby! Like I’ve said before, it shouldn’t feel like an obligation. It should be fun, and if keeping up with the backlog was making it not fun, I say the hell with it and good riddance!

*gasp* Oh my goodness! I saw you saying that on your post about the game, and I’m still in shock. It would be like me finding a replacement for Sephiroth :O

      • Life is too short! I’m spending it doing the things I enjoy now 🙂

I know! I can’t believe it either. It’s the first time Lightning has ever been challenged as my badass idol. I’ve learned many more things about Aloy now, and her backstory is very intriguing. I’ll declare a winner once I’m done HZD, haha. (I have a strong feeling Lightning will win though 🙂 )

        • I think you like Aloy for the same reasons you like Lightning so she was your source 🙂

I had a bit of dilemma when I was first introduced to Loki from the Marvel movies. I. LOVED. Him, and me and my fangirl friend would discuss “would you rather” and of course she asked the “Sephiroth or Loki” question to which I cried. It was very VERY close for a while. I love Loki for similar reasons to Seph. They both have tragic back stories, missing moms, and dickhead dads that lied to them about their origins. I do wonder if one day a villain will come along and dethrone my Seph. I think he’d be quite upset with me :O
