<–The State of the Gamer: 3/7/17 The State of the Gamer: 3/21/17–>
A weekly post updated every Tuesday detailing my current gaming projects. I have quite a backlog of games to either play or watch, and I’m hoping a weekly article will assist with my progress as my other accountable posts have done with reading and writing.
I have an account at Grouvee, which is a essentially Goodreads for gamers, so please feel free to friend me there!

Title: World of Final Fantasy
Series: Final Fantasy
Genre: RPG – Fantasy
Developer: Square Enix
Platform(s): PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita
Release Date: October 25, 2016
Date Bought: October 21, 2016
Date Started: November 5, 2016
Date Finished(?): February 19, 2017
I really wish I had time to play this more than once a week. I’m at fantastic farming spot, so I could level my characters up really easily. I did manage to defeat XG with a little help from a friend..

I summoned him three times.
The caption doesn’t lie. I summoned Seph three times after using the Behemonster mega Mirage. The latter has an ability that grows stronger the less HP you have, so I exploited that. It was still a hard battle that I nearly lost. XG has this one move that can outright kill one of you stacks, and he moves fast. But I persevered, and now I have another mega Mirage.
I need to go after Elasmos next along with the Master Tonberry whom I still can’t capture even though I’ve leveled up Bahamut enough to knock off 20k off his HP. I’m thinking I need to be in the 25k range so more leveling for me. Since Elasmos has the same prismatunity as Master Tonberry (a large amount of HP taken off at once), I’m going to use the latter as the test. Once I can catch him, I’ll go after the former.

I’ve been really slacking with this LP. I don’t know if it’s the game itself or me. There has been more combat and I don’t find that as interesting as the story stuff, bu the story stuff is very interesting. I’m about halfway through, so I have a ways to go. I really do want to re-watch the ending with fresh eyes, more information, and a new perspective to see if I still feel the same way.
Games Added to Playlist: 4
- Super Mario Run – It was hard to resist adding this after hearing Defy the Majority sing its praises for quite a few blog posts 🙂 Plus it’s an iOS game, so it’s easy to take with me and play when I have some downtime. I don’t know if I’m going to spend money on the extra levels. It’ll all depend on how much I like the game.
- Final Fantasy VII: Remake – I actually summed up my pre-ordering of this in a Facebook post. Let’s see if I can still find it *rummages around* Ah here it is! (I also know that it’s not coming out on December 29; they just have to put a date for release that will more than likely be moved back. I assume they picked that date because it’s the last Friday of the year).
I’m on Twitter talking with people about FFXII: The Zodiac Age so I figure I’ll go to Amazon to see when it comes out or if it’s out already. You know how Amazon gives you recommendations if you click on something, right? Okay. So it recommends the FFVII: Remake. Pause the video game #pun. I didn’t know it had a release date yet. I avoid mainstream/popular gaming sites especially those specific for FFVII for a variety of reasons I don’t have the mental strength to get into now (I’ve been planning a “Grind My Gears” post for months about that very thing, but…now is a really shitty time of the year to talk about it, and I’m out of my daily anti-anxiety meds). It has one of December 29, 2017, after Christmas (AND Advent, double entendre intended). You can pre-order it. As much as I’ve been doing the true fan thing, critiquing aka complaining about things and fending off trepidation, we all knew there was no way in hell I wasn’t going to buy it, because how else am I going to continue to complain/judge. I LOVE judging things. I even found an awesome meme dedicated to it that uses Sephiroth #metaIn all honesty, I believe the mark of a true fan is someone who holds their favorite things accountable, because we want them to be the best version of themselves. It’s one of the reasons I’m quite harsh on Game of Thrones and initially gave A Dance With Dragons (the 5th book) a low rating (I’m rereading it to give it another chance).
The Remake isn’t going to erase the prior canon. it’ll just be another thread to unravel in the complex weft that is FFVII. I love for that shit. Nor is it going to render all the essays I’ve written useless. I also don’t care that its episodic. Really? That’s a complaint? Mass Effect had three parts with DLCs, so did Dragon Age. I’m aware that those are WRPGs and FFVII is a JRPG, but it makes sense if they’re going to flesh things out. Is Squeenix going to make a shit ton money? Of course, but that doesn’t mean the installments will be any less enjoyable (I’m just saying they better have a Japanese with English subtitles option like WOFF does, because I’m spoiled for that shit now).
TL; DR – The FFVII Remake is available for pre-order and I bought it because the universe exists #nothingtoseehere
- Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl – I found/added this while searching for another game. The Otaku Judge reviewed a fun seeming JRPG called Brave Dungeon that I wanted to add. Alas, I don’t think it’s available yet in the states, but the fore mentioned popped up when I typed it into Amazon’s search bar. It’s not the game I went looking for, but it is another JRPG. I put Brave Dungeon in my notes, so I can remember to check for it periodically. It’s on neither Amazon nor Grouvee, which means if I don’t write it down somewhere, I’ll surely forget about it.
- Final Fantasy XII; The Zodiac Age – Speaking of FFXII, I’d gone to look for this on Amazon to see how much a pre-order would be, and that’s what started the whole thing (see FFVII: Remake entry above). My assumption is “Zodiac Age” is due to it being the 12th numbered Final Fantasy, and there are 12 signs of the Zodiac. I haven’t pre-ordered it yet (I already spent $50 on VII), but I probably will in the coming weeks since it comes out in July.

What are you currently playing and/or watching? Is it something new or old? Is it a first time run or a replay? What’s the genre? Would you recommend it? What’s on your radar to play next?

Even the adorable version of the Great General still looks like he can kick ass!
I’m hoping the FFVII remake turns out amazing! Squeenix knows how important that game is to a lot of fans. As long as their marketing department stays away, they will likely go the extra mile to make sure it turns into a masterpiece. So true though – judging the things we love just means we truly care about them 🙂

Right?! And he totally can. His move is called Supernova, though I’m not sure why they didn’t just call it Meteor, because that’s what it is. It also bestows a strength plus on all your characters, which is really useful, too.
I hope so, too. I’m going to try to keep an open mind at least 🙂

I was tempted by World of Final Fantasy once before. It just lacks that little something for me to take the leap. Perhaps one day I may be persuaded.

What was the think lacking for you? I might be able to shed some light on it and persuade you 🙂 I will say that it was more than worth the $50 I spent. I’ve gotten over 200 hours worth of play out of it, and the story was only “sparse” if you do a lot of side quests at once.

I wish I knew. I just don’t get excited about the release of a Final Fantasy like I used to, even one such as this. Maybe I’m the problem, haha!

Honestly, neither do I, and initially I didn’t have much interest in WOFF, but then a friend was talking about it, and the pre-order came with a Sephiroth summon, so I figured, “I’m in.” I’m glad I did. It was honestly like playing an anime in some situations (the pre-order also came with the option of Japanese subtitles), but I don’t think you’re the problem. Squeenix has let a LOT of fans down over the years.

On that point I most definitely agree with you.

That Ys joke… you monster, lol.
Lately, I’ve been logging into Neverwinter for 20-30 minutes to finish some important dailies. I’m completely buried under homework, exams, and essays, so I still can’t bring myself to play anything with a story. I’ve been playing a few matches of Overwatch and Smite if I have time to unwind, but that’s about it. I’m sad I didn’t grab a Switch at launch to play Zelda, but I’d be even more depressed if I got one and couldn’t play it due to time constraints. So… I guess it worked out?

Bahahaha I’ getting so many comments on that. I love it!!!
I think with all you’re waist deep in, Neverwinter sounds like the best game to just relax. I’m at the point in WOFF now since I’m in PPS. There’s no more story really left to tell (well you do still kind of find diary entries, but it’s more like more to the epilogue). I’m just grinding and collecting mirages. If I wasn’t so bad at time management I’d play some WOFF then play some Journey. It’s like a three hour game! How have I not finished it yet??
I think you made the right decision. You’d feel that itch to play it and wouldn’t be able to because of time constraints. Think about how awesome it’ll be to play in the summer (unless you’re taking summer classes then er….)

I started A King’s Tale a week ago, the retro brawler FFXV prequel thingy. It’s only 1 1/2 hours long. I still haven’t finished it, so I feel your pain lol.
I am definitely NOT taking summer classes, haha. I need to take the summer off to help my mom with some stuff that she hasn’t had time to deal with since dad’s passing. It’ll be a busy, busy summer, but in more of a physically exhausting manner. Mental exhaustion is far, far worse in my opinion. I’ll take grunt work any day.

Good. I was going to question your sanity if you were going in the summer, though I’ve known a few friends who do so just to get it over with. I’m perfectly fine taking longer though to save myself from utterly losing my mind. You need the break. Plus that’s a more than adequate reason.
Physical and mental exhaustion are sort of on a continuum for me. If I do too much physically, I can kiss my mental faculties goodbye lol. I think I can recover quicker from physical exhaustion though…at least enough to do mental stuff the next day 🙂

Yeah, taking two accelerated classes at once is mind numbing, so I’m not sure I could do that again during the summer. I’ll take another semester at a normal pace, happily.

Ha! That Ys line. I love it! 😛

I don’t even know where they come from lol. I seriously make bad puns all the time even in situations where the person would never even realize I was making a bad pun :p

Thanks for the shout out! 🙂 Super Mario Run is a fun little game to play for a few minutes here and there. I hope you like it!!
Oh, and I definitely did not know how to pronounce Ys, so thanks for that LOL!! 😉

Certainly! I wanted to let people know where I got the idea from 🙂
I only know because of Hungrygoriya’s Let’s Play lol. I would’ve said “Yees” or something like that, but I think “eez” sounds much better.

I’m not happy about being squeezed for money by Squeenix over a number of episodes, so yeah, that is a real complaint. It’s more the fact that I feel like JRPG fans are now at risk of being subjected to this kind of bullshit treatment. Just look at what happened with Fire Emblem Fates. Still, if they can justify the episodic treatment then hey, I can forgive them.
I agree with you about A Dance With Dragons though. Like half the subplot in that series need to tie up soon. I think GRRM is making it up as he goes along now.

I hear you. I was really annoyed when I heard that they were doing that, too, but I’m really trying to give them the benefit of the doubt…it’s hard though. I figure this though. If they’re really going to expand on things, I can deal with it being three episodes. Like you figure Mass Effect and Dragon Age are three separate installments, so we’ll see. I actually do not know much about the Fire Emblem series, so alas I cannot make that comparison!
He knows how it’s going to end, but there are still some things up in the air. He said that one of the episodes gave him an idea, which I can’t fault him for. I wrote a novel years ago, where I had the ending planned and it had been planned for a decade. Then I thought about one of my favorite movies and I completely changed the end right before I wrote it hehe. Winds is going to have to start bringing story lines together. There’s only one more book after that.

Mirage Sephiroth is adorable, even though I can tell what part of VII that image is replicating. How can he be so vicious yet so cute at the same time? Still love reading your progress on WoFF. Makes me want to go back and finally play through it!
I’ve been playing Switch, of course. I did beat Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and already have a review ready to go up today. I’m also playing other Switch games, which I have now decided will be part of this project that originally encompassed Super Mario 64. It will still be about Super Mario 64, because I can’t deny having played all that, but now it’ll be more. Sorry for teasing. 😛 Still working things out!

Isn’t he? I have a very closer replica (or I suppose I should say “clone,” though that’s a bit of a mistranslation lol) of him from Theater Rhythm, though if Squeenix ever released licensed figurines from WOFF, they’d making an absolute killing. Ah, I love tempting people to play lol. It’s a bit selfish because I love talking about the game with its trials and travails. I really should be planning my review of it, but I’m slacking since I’m still technically playing. I did some grinding tonight, but Bahamut is still around six levels away from 80.
I saw you put up a review! I’ll carefully read that this weekend (I already shared it on the Book of Faces). I have a suspicion about what the project is hehe, but I shall keep my lips sealed 🙂

I don’t know if they have figures, but I think those POP figures that I see all over the place are similar to Theater Rhythm or WOFF. And haha, don’t you worry. Someday, I will play and we shall discuss the game!
And thanks! I also noticed on El Libro de Las Casas! 🙂 Hahaha, I bet you do know! I keep it hush hush besides teasing, mostly because things just haven’t been definite. Like, there have been so many roadblocks to this project that there were times were I considered giving it up. So there’s definitely some sweat and tears going into this so I hope you enjoy! I think you will, especially since you seem to know what it is. 😉 Psst, thanks for keeping my unannounced secret a secret for now, haha.

Your secret is safe with me! I’m not in the business of spoiling surprises or stealing anyone’s thunder, and it’ll be all the more exciting when the big reveal occurs.

Many people rave about the Etrian Odyssey series so I hope you enjoy your purchase. I own a couple of those games, but they are are too difficult for me. That and I am too impatient to draw maps.

Oh no…you have to draw maps? Hm, this may be problematic hehe. I’m terrible at drawing! I think it’s for a system I don’t own yet, so I have some time to consider my options 🙂
