The State of the Gamer: 3/21/17

<–The State of the Gamer: 3/14/17          The State of the Gamer: 3/28/17–.

A weekly post updated every Tuesday detailing my current gaming projects.  I have quite a backlog of games to either play or watch, and I’m hoping a weekly article will assist with my progress as my other accountable posts have done with reading and writing.
I have an account at Grouvee, which is a essentially Goodreads for gamers, so please feel free to friend me there!

I think all I did was level up this past week, and I only played on Wednesday.  I’m debating whether or not I’m going to pick up the Balthier summon just to say I have it/for completion, because I really don’t have anything else to do (unless they release more DLCs).  I’m just grinding in the best leveling spot, trying to get Bahamut up to level 80.  I think he’s either 74 or 75, but I have been thinking of trying for Master Tonberry and Elasmos afterwards if the former is successful.  After that I’m pretty sure that’s all of the Mirages, but I’m sure I”ll check to make sure that I have indeed caught them all.

journey-cover

I played!  I actually played this week, and I’m nearly at the end!  I would’ve finished, but I got stuck in the snow and alas there was no friendly chocobo carriage to pick me up (little FFVII humor there).  I could find the door I was supposed to go through, but couldn’t figure out how to get it open.  It turns out I missed a shrine right after the part with the heavy winds, so when I play tomorrow, I’ll remedy that.

In other news, my scarf is pitifully short like I think I picked up maybe one extension of it, so I can’t fly very far.  Because of this, I’m seriously considering going through the game again, although I think I can go back to previous chapters without starting over (there is chapter selection), so I may just do that.  Either way, I’m super excited to finally reach the mountain and see the conclusion.  I can’t wait to review this game so I can talk about what my interpretation of it is!

Games Currently Watching

Title: Ys: The Vanished Omens
Series: Ys
Genre: Action RPG – Fantasy
Developer: Nihon Falcon
Original Platform: Multiple
Original Release Date: June 21, 1987
Let’s Player: Hungry Goriya
Date Started: February 13, 2017
Date Finished: March 19, 2017

The let’s play is complete!  The “man in the black cloak” has been defeated (I’m serious), and peace has returned to the land.  I’m hoping HG decides to do an LP of the other games in the series, because I for one thoroughly enjoyed watching Aron’s adventures.

I’ve been scoping out Sega Master Systems myself for the past week or so.  Amazon had one for the astronomical price of $700!  But when I just looked on the Google, I found ones as low as $14.90 (a price I don’t really trust) and the more reasonable $100-$150 area with a few games to boot.  I didn’t pick one up yet, but it’s on my radar now.

Title: Mass Effect III
Series: Mass Effect
Genre: Action RPG – Sci-Fi
Developer: BioWare
Original Platform(s): Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3
Original Release Date: March 6, 2012
Let’s Player: Olizandri
Date Started: January 23, 2017

Seriously, I have been slacking on watching this let’s play, and I’m not sure why.  I’ve decided I’m going to play the trilogy myself, and this may explain my lessened enthusiasm for watching it.  It’s certainly not the intrepid let’s player, Olizandri, whom I still find utterly darling, and I still want to watch Athene’s LP of the first Mass Effect.

Of course I can’t not talk about Andromeda since it came out today, and my one friend is absolutely over the moon (or rather galaxy I suppose) about it.  He’s fanboy/girling as hard as I was when I found out about the FFVII: Remake.

Now I have to try to avoid spoilers, and since I have no idea when I’m going to play the original trilogy, this is going to be like dodging bullets.  All I know is it takes place 600 years after the events of the first game, which is when the initiative began, so the events of the original trilogy don’t have much direct bearing on the current story.  My fanboy friend (whom I’m hoping does a Twitch stream of it at some point…though I’m not going to watch it yet hehe, but his site is here) informed me that the main character’s father has the same N7 rank as Shepherd, and I’m certain his/her name is well known even 600 years later.

After I finally finish WOFF and Journey, I plan to start FFV and FFXIII.  I think after I finish one of those then I’ll fire up the first Mass Effect.  I think I’m going to limit myself to two games at a time.  This is a good hunt plan :p

Total Games in Backlog: 100

I did some housekeeping on my backlog in deleting multiple games in a series unless that series is Final Fantasy or I already have the game in my possession.  This is similar to what I did for my Goodreads’ list in removing multiple books by the same author.  I figure I can add the next game as I finish them just as I can add the next book as I finish that.

Games Bought This Week: 1

  1. Final Fantasy Brave Exvius – I had no idea that this was for iOS or Android like Record Keeper (which I still need to finish).  Since I have literally no room left on my phone, I figured I’d see if I could download the game for my Kindle, which I was able to do.  I may do the same thing with Record Keeper, which should free up some room on my phone.

Total Games on Watch List: 23

What are you currently playing and/or watching? Is it something new or old?  Is it a first time run or a replay?  What’s the genre?  Would you recommend it?  What’s on your radar to play next?

  2. lol My boyfriend reminded me this weekend that come Tuesday I basically wasn’t going to have a boyfriend anymore due to the new Mass Effect game coming out. 😛
Glad to read that you’re able to play Journey without that motion sickness you mentioned when you were first playing it. It sucks to have to give up on a game due to that.

  3. I’m FINALLY going to pick up a video game. (Right after my husband and roommate finish it or there will be 3 people fighting over who gets to play the PS4.) I’m going to pick up Horizon Zero Dawn because the graphics are AMAZING and the story line combines my two favorite things; epic fantasy and sci-fi! I’m seriously pumped to play it.

    • I am so not surprised that that game struck your fancy lol. I’ve been eyeing it up myself ever since I saw the preview. You have to let me know what you think of it! I’m kind of crappy with actual combat (aka non-turn based), but there are a bunch of games like that and Mass Effect that I want to give a try. Mwahaha, welcome to the dark (or dork) side >:)

  4. So glad you enjoyed Ys! I’m still tracking down more games in the series, but sooner or later I’d like to play the sequels as well!

I’m glad you made it through World of Final Fantasy. When I read your posts about it, it makes me want to play it so badly! Master Tonberry was a huge jerk to me in several FF games, and I want to harness his dark, evil powers for my own evildoing!

    • Ys was a lot of fun to watch, and that music was just amazing.

I’m so close to being done done. It’s a very enjoyable game, and I’ve certainly gotten my money’s worth with over 200 hours of game play. I can’t complain about that! Ugh, I hate how they have to draw out stabbing you with that kitchen knife. You KNOW it’s going to kill you. Just get it over with.

  5. I’m liking Final Fantasy Brave Exvius so far, but just forget about trying to get your favourite characters, haha. The RNG god wants you to pay so all the best characters have stupidly low drop rates. I’m settling for Snow, with a 0.5% chance of Hope I’ll see Lightning. My goal is to focus on seeing the main story before I get bored with it.

    • I’m totally going into this blind! I have no idea what it’s even about lol. I was cleaning up my backlog, and I saw it and couldn’t remember what console it was for. I was surprised it was only for mobile, so I popped it on my Kindle.

I know I’ll never get MY favorite character D:

      • It’s essentially a freemium Final Fantasy adventure, complete with those terrible “energy” mechanics, crystal related things, airships, and an epic music score. I just play once a day so that energy thing doesn’t annoy me too much, haha.

I haven’t seen ANY characters from FF VII, VIII, X, or XII yet. So far I’ve just got a bunch of people I never heard of (I’m still a FF noob), Tellah from IV, and Hope & Snow from XIII.

        • “Freemium” that is the best term ever. I haven’t heard of these energy mechanics, but if your tone is any indication, I’m going to hate them.

I may give it a whirl this weekend. I don’t know if I’ll count mobile games as my two game at a time limit, especially if I’m just doing it sporadically.

  6. Woo Journey!! Such a fantastic game!!! Teehee no there are no chocobos. I’m interested to hear what your interpretation of the game is!!!!

I’m one of the souls over in Andromeda, although I’m still plugging away at the original trilogy, too 🙂

    • Right?? I’m super excited to write what I think about it. I’m avoiding reading any other interpretations until I do, so I can go in with an uninfluenced mind.

You seem to be making good progress on the original ME though! I seem to get an update about once a day! I’ve been such a slacker with finishing up the ME3 let’s play I was watching. It’s not the LPer’s fault. I think it’s because 2 seemed to have more story than combat or maybe a more equal amount whereas with 3 the story is wrapping up because the enemy is literally past the gates. I’m sure I’ll get back to it though. I’m about halfway through, and I want to watch yours when I’m done! Since I’ll have seen the entire game by then, I’m okay with playing and watching it at the same time (though I’ve got a few games ahead of it in the backlog).

      • Thanks! Yeah since I usually play in more than one hour stints it’s been easy (sort of) to keep the posting schedule regular. We’ll see how it goes 🙂

You’re right that ME2 has a little more story and is much more character-focused. I’m not sure if your LPer played through the Arrival DLC or not, but just like you can see the transition from ME1/ME2 to ME3 style of game in that DLC, it’s interesting looking at ME3 and then playing ME:A, combat-wise. I’m not sure what the ratio of conversation:combat is, though, so it could just be how the games start. ME1/ME2 have some talking, and ME3 has some explosions…

        No rush to watch! 🙂

  7. Yay! You played Journey! I look forward to reading your review when you finish! And Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is interesting though I haven’t played as much of it as I have Record Keeper. They seem very similar so far, though I feel somewhat burned out on the gacha free-to-play system after Fire Emblem Heroes.

My wife got me I Am Setsuna as a gift, so we’ve been playing it together! We’re enjoying it so far, especially as fans of classic SNES RPGs like Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger. Also, I’ve been planning something uh, special, for it… Yup. Not that you’d somehow read me like an open book or anything.

    • It’s been marinating for a couple of days. I even had a dream about it last night where in the dream I was crying about the ending, though I didn’t at the time of completion. I definitely had chills though, and I have more than one interpretation to talk about. It’s more “maybe this happened” than “this definitely happened.” It may be one of my longer reviews (though hopefully not as long as FFIV).

I played a little bit of Record Keeper, but I had to remove it from my phone to make room. I’m trying to put it on my Kindle, but for some reason I seem to only have that set to download free things, so I’ll have to try to remedy that.

I have I Am Setsuna! I bought it a while back during one of PSN’s sales. I hear it’s a beautiful homage to SNES era RPGs, but it’s a bit short.

Oh that’s excited you’re thinking of including it in your upcoming project! I can’t wait to see if my suppositions are right 😀
