The State of the Gamer: 3/28/17

<–The State of the Gamer: 3/21/17          The State of the Gamer: 4/4/17–>

A weekly post updated every Tuesday detailing my current gaming projects.  I have quite a backlog of games to either play or watch, and I’m hoping a weekly article will assist with my progress as my other accountable posts have done with reading and writing.
I have an account at Grouvee, which is a essentially Goodreads for gamers, so please feel free to friend me there!

journey-cover

I not only finished this masterpiece this week, I wrote a review for it, too.  I have serious intentions of playing through this again, and I’ve added it to my Let’s Play list when I finally gather all of the pieces together to do that (it’s a quest).

Thanks to LightningEllen and…ugh, I’m going to kick myself.  There was someone else who posted about this game before Lightning, and I can’t remember who it was!  Ah iplayedthegame.  I knew I’d remember (no I didn’t go to his page and search for it.  How dare you?!)

Anyway, I downloaded this Sunday night, but I haven’t had a chance to install and play yet.  I’m told it’s short, so hopefully I can get through it in one sessions.

Title: World of Final Fantasy
Series: Final Fantasy
Genre: RPG – Fantasy
Developer: Square Enix
Platform(s): PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita
Release Date: October 25, 2016
Date Bought: October 21, 2016
Date Started: November 5, 2016
Date Finished(?): February 19, 2017

world-of-final-fantasy

I’m just cleaning up the easy trophies right now.  I’m not planning on collecting all of them, since some are quite obscure.  Like there’s a hidden one where you have to “kill many enemies with any type of Magitek Armor.”  What constitutes “many?”  I’m probably going to go after another hidden one with a definitive goal: having Lann deliver the finishing blow to the Quacho Queen.  Then there’s a regular one for mastering 100 Mirage boards.  I’m already at 82.  I still need to look into that Balthier summon.

Title: Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius
Series: Final Fantasy
Genre: RPG – Fantasy
Developer: Square Enix
Platform(s): iOS, Android
Release Date: June 29, 2016
Date Purchased: March 21, 2017
Date Started: March 27, 2017

I don’t know why I slept on this for so long.  It was free on iOS, though I downloaded it onto my Kindle since I have little to no room left on my phone.  I’d really like to throw Record Keeper on there, too, but it doesn’t seem to be available.

So far I’m really liking it.  The music is absolutely phenomenal, and definitely has that Final Fantasy feel.  The main characters are of course pretty.

There’s Rain:

If it starting “Raining” this man, I wouldn’t complain

And Lasswell:

Lass VERY well!I have no idea what that means…

Further supporting my theory that there are no ugly people in Final Fantasy (at least not the main characters).

I really love the way they speak and have been reading their dialogue aloud with an English accent (don’t kill me other side of the pond friends), because it seems the inflection to match their speech.

The story is typical Final Fantasy fare.  The Earth Shrine was infiltrated by an armored man (who looks a hell of a lot like Golbez) who *spoiler* shattered the Earth Crystal and slaughtered Rain’s men. *end spoiler*  He and his best friend Lasswell are now on their way to the town of Mitra to figure out what they’re going to do next.

I haven’t yet run into the issue of only being able to play up to a certain point, and I actually got around two hours of gameplay in last night.  I’m still a bit shaky on all the controls and am unsure whether or not I should friend the people I use as companions.  I don’t know if it’s rude that I haven’t.  I’d give you all my nickname, but it’s stuck on whatever was randomly picked, and every time I try to…oh wait!  I wasn’t making it long enough.  It’s AshRose777 if any of you play and want to add me 🙂

So far I’m enjoying it, and I’m curious about why it has such a low rating on Grouvee (2.38).  I suppose either I’ll find out or disagree with the less than stellar assessment.

Games Currently Watching: 2

Title: Phantasy Star
Series: Phantasy Star
Genre: RPG – Fantasy/Science Fiction
Developer: Sega
Original Platforms: Sega Master System
Other Platforms: Sega Genesis, Wii Virtual Console
Original Release Date: December 20, 1987
Let’s Player: Hungry Goriya
Date Started: March 24, 2017

It’s another 8-bit RPG for the Sega Master System!  This was already on my backlog and having HG do a let’s play of it just makes me want to play it more.  It seems to be in the science fantasy genre as it takes place on another planet, and there’s space travel between the main and two other worlds.  Typical fantasy fare of an oppressive regime that the hero needs to take down (…erm reality maybe, too?), and it seems to be a pattern with SMS RPGs that the main character starts off weak and alone needing to level up quite a bit before any progress can be made.  Though this was also a trait of early Final Fantasies, too, and if I’m not mistaken Dragon Warrior also threw you into the fighting pit.

Title: Mass Effect III
Series: Mass Effect
Genre: Action RPG – Sci-Fi
Developer: BioWare
Original Platform(s): Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3
Original Release Date: March 6, 2012
Let’s Player: Olizandri
Date Started: January 23, 2017

Slacking Narcissist is slacking.  I did watch another video this week, but I didn’t pay a lot of attention to it, because it was another combat heavy one.  Olizandri is in the midst of the Omega DLC.  I may see if I can skip past the combat to the story parts, since that’s what I’m most interested in.

Games Added to Playlist: 6

  1. Mass Effect – I’ve been talking about playing this on here, Facebook, and Twitter, so I added it to my backlog.  I probably should’ve included it in my “Purchased” section since we bought the trilogy a few weeks ago for $5 (thanks to Cheap Boss Attack for tipping me off about the PSN sale on that!)
  2. Suikoden II – I could’ve sworn I had this on my backlog already.  I do own it, but maybe I just forgot to click that other button.  Ah well.
  3. Horizon: Zero Dawn – Too many people to name have recommended this game, though the instant I saw the preview I was interested.  Aloy has a similar look to Ygritte from Game of Thrones, that same fiery hair and fierce mien.  I’m really curious why robo-dinosaurs are running around in what appears to be prehistoric earth.  At some point humans (or someone) had the ability to make such complex machines, but then something happened to bring us back to the stone age.  Going back to Game of Thrones/ASOIAF, many of Martin’s stories are about this very thing, too.
  4. NieR: Automata – I have Cheap Boss Attack to thank for this recommendation, nor did I know it was a Square Enix game until a comment discussion.  It’s an action RPG, but you can adjust the difficulty, which makes an unskilled noob like me very happy hehe.  This is another human/robot (or android) story, but the machines are more sentient to the point where they’ve developed philosophy and factions.
  5. Ori and the Blind Forest – Um, I am seriously scatter-brained this week.  I have no clue who recommended this nor do I know why I added it.  It sounds like something I’d enjoy.  The cover is exquisite.
  6. Braid – I added this due to Extra Life Reviews’ take on another game made by the same people, The Witness.  Braid was mentioned, and it sounded like something I’d like.

Total Games in Backlog: 97
Change from Last Week: -3

How did I add six games, yet still go down three?  I have no clue…I did do some clean up so it’s possible that it just worked out that way.

…Omg I had Brave Exvius in my Games Bought section last week *headdesk*  Well, I’m going to keep it as is above, because I like that description better.

Miscellaneous

I tweeted about my first Amiibo purchase, but I didn’t reveal what it was.  Presenting…

Princess Rosalina

I figured I’d put her among young and older Elsa so that she’d be with other blondies (though Vincent is lurking in the back), and you can’t see them, but she’s standing in between Sephiroth on the left (you can his hand the Masamune) and Cecil on the right.  I guess you could argue that they’re both blond, though I put silver hair in a class all its own.

The Mario Galaxy princess was the only Amiibo at Target I had the slightest interest in.  I didn’t know you could use them with the game, which is cool, so I have more of a reason to get a Nintendo 3DS, though I’m perfectly happy just having them as collectibles.

I also received two posters today.

I just have to figure out where I’m going to hang them.  Hm, you know what’s funny?  They’re both holding symbols of death.  Lilies are associated with that (they’re also poisonous to cats, which is hysterical when I think about Northern Lights), and the Black Materia is an instrument of death and destruction.  Just another philosophical insight from your friendly neighborhood Narcissist/FFVII fangirl trash.

What are you currently playing and/or watching? Is it something new or old?  Is it a first time run or a replay?  What’s the genre?  Would you recommend it?  What’s on your radar to play next?

  2. Lots of good game recommendations on that list. Hopefully you enjoy NieR: Automata if you get around to checking it out. I’ll have to check out your Journey review this weekend when I do my blog catch-up routine.

Those amiibo are a slippery slope, my friend! One turns to two, two turns to twelve. At least the Zelda ones give me neat bonuses in Breath of the Wild.

On the game front, I gave up on Mass Effect: Andromeda and sent it back to GameFly. I have Toukiden 2 (also from GameFly) in my PS4, but I’ve been glued to my Switch. I’m 12 or so hours into Breath of the Wild, which is incredible, and I just received review keys for Snake Pass and Has-Been Heroes today. Snake Pass is done and reviewed, and I just put down Has-Been Heroes after a few hours. It’s a fun RPG that’s kind of like Plants vs. Zombies if it were a dungeon crawler roguelike. Very well made.

Hopefully, I’ll get more Zelda in this week once my Has-Been review goes live. Fingers crossed!

    • Ah I’m so happy to hear we all have a “blog check up” routine lol. I try to check my email every other day so I don’t fall too far behind, but I do use the weekends for catch up.

I am most definitely taking your recommendation about that Best Buy gamer card. It’s too good of a deal to pass up, and I buy enough video games during the year to warrant it. I’ll buy more from Best Buy, and hell, since they have online services, it’s not like I even need to drag my carcass into the store. Dangerous. Very dangerous.

*sigh* Collectibles are just bad. I just received an email from Squeenix today telling me my Sephiroth figurine that I pre-ordered in December was going to ship soon. Frankly, I’m relieved, because it means I don’t have to pour my wrath down on Squeenix for NOT delivering. I also don’t want to look or think about how much is going to be charged on my credit card then we have YOU tweeting me more stuff. Shame. Shame :p

I saw your review on Snake Pass when I was looking for the link to NieR on your blog! I’m on the hunt for so many systems, I should make a poll/contest for which one I’ll find/buy first hehe. Sega Master System, Switch, or PS3.

Here’s hoping! I’m probably going to boot up Brave Exvius again tonight, and see how far I can get.

  3. Hey, thanks for the shout-out! I’m not sure how good Braid is, but I hope you end up enjoying it.

I’ve been meaning to check out Horizon Zero Dawn; I think I will once I get a moment. As it stands, there are a lot of other good games coming out within the next few months.

  4. Horizon: Zero Dawn is really cool. I’ve been watching my boyfriend play it and it’s just an all around bundle of gaming goodness! 🙂 I thought the exact same thing about her looking like Ygritte too! 😛 And I love that Ashly Burch voices her! ❤

    Liked by 2 people

    • I had to google Ashley Burch, and her name on Twitter now is Horizon Zero Ashley, which is just perfect. I think I’m going to buy this best buy card that another friend told me about. It’s $30 for two years and you get 20% off any new game. I like those odds!

      • Ha! That’s awesome. Her and her brother Anthony have a bunch of short comedy videos based around video games and their crazy antics called “Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin'” up on youtube that are really funny. It’s really cool to see her doing all these voice acting roles now and being in actual video games. 😀
Yeah, that Best Buy card is awesome. My boyfriend has one and he says it’s totally worth it. It pays for itself in no time. 🙂

    • I remembered eventually!! I have TERRIBLE source memory. The only way I can recall where I’ve heard something is if I take a note. One time I wound up telling an anecdote to the same friend who’d told me it a week ago. It was hilarious. I fully admit I’m absent minded. Thank god for technology, otherwise I’d remember nothing.

    • Exactly! It makes no damn sense. I’m at least glad you can click into the hidden ones and see what they entail. At least I know if I do decided to search for it, there are probably a ton of people who have done it already so I’ll get idea what “many” means.

  5. Yay, Journey! Let me know what you think of Braid. I saw a Let’s Play of it, so I’d be interested (as always) to hear your thoughts when you get around to playing it. Also, awesome artwork!!

Oh, I’m still lost in Andromeda. I still need to finish Witcher 3 and start Horizon: Zero Dawn, too haha

  6. Hopefully by the time you gather your LP equipment, I’ll have beaten Journey and can watch your LP 🙂

Thanks for the shout out! I’m really interested to find out what you think about Unloop. Brave Exvius definitely has the Final Fantasy charm. The music is just fantastic! 🙂 I haven’t figured out how to search by username, but if you want to add me to BE, my long friend code thing is: 837,403,232

I tried to warn you about Amiibo… I’ll just leave it at that *shakes head in disappointment* Those posters are beautiful! I hope you find the perfect spot to display them.

    Liked by 1 person

    • I’m hoping it will be sooner rather than later. I have that one video capture device recommended by Athena that’s around $150, so we shall see.

Okay…booting up BE because it’s got to load. I didn’t even know about this long friend code thingy. I just figured out how to change my user name yesterday lol. Someone did friend me the other day, and I was super excited because they’re on Lvl 9 and I think it means I can use them in my party whenever I want.

Oh you’re at a MUCH higher level than me! I wonder what the heck my friend code is. I’m sure there’s a way to figure this out.

*sigh* Yes, I never listen to good advice :p

I need to get frames and figure out where the heck they’re going to go. I’d really like to make a nook of my shelf o’fandom so when I start doing recordings, I can have that as my backdrop.

  7. I just read your Journey review and loved it! I commented on it there, so I’ll just focus on congratulating you on your first amiibo purchase here. Congrats on your new amiibo! Rosalina’s a great one to have, as she used to be a rare Target exclusive. I know, because I had to search really hard and get lucky to find one back in the day. Maybe it’ll be the first of many? Though not everyone is as crazy as me and gets every amiibo… Heh heh…

And it’s great that you got Brave Exvius! From what I’ve played, I think you would enjoy it. I played a bit of it, but grew tired of the summoning mechanics especially after Fire Emblem Heroes took all my energy from free-to-play gacha games. At least I made out with a Zidane and Vivi (two of my favorites!) before I stopped playing. Still, I’d love to continue reading your thoughts on it!

I’m currently playing through I Am Setsuna… for reasons… that will be divulged today. So excited! 😀

    • I’ve been warned and admonished about it hehe. Once you buy one, you’re pretty much doomed. I’m hoping that one day soon I have a Wii U to use her with. I had no idea they were interactive!

I’ve been playing it for about two hours every night, and it’s quite enjoyable! I’m still getting the hang of things. I just realized I had to claim all of my mission rewards, which is totally my fault since it plainly says you have to do that from the home screen. It’s okay though; I went from having 1500 gil to 35k 😮 Is it similar to Fire Emblem Heroes? As of now I haven’t played to a high enough level where I have to wait to do anything, and I’m just proceeding along with the story and doing some of the dungeon crawling. My next big thing is figuring out how to make or obtain keys for all those locked chests I left behind. Ooooh you really lucked out! I’m hoping I get that lucky. Though Sephiroth isn’t an option yet 😦

I’ll comment on the “reasons” when I get to that blog post lol. I was having some trouble with sub notifications going to spam, but I think I fixed it now. I’m blaming Yahoo for this. That’s what they’re a bunch of :p

      Liked by 1 person

      • Yes, once you buy one, you buy them all. At least, I did… No regrets though. They interact with a lot of games, though it varies which ones are compatible with what. And some amiibo do more than others overall especially the Mario and Legend of Zelda amiibo. Love collecting them no matter what series they’re from though! And soon, a Cloud amiibo is supposed to come out!

Fire Emblem Heroes has a very similar honeymoon period, where they give you a lot, and things cost little. After a while, it takes a long time to get summoning currency, and it takes a lot of “stamina” to get through a level. I think most gacha games are like that so it’s not exclusive to either FFBE or FEH. Either way, I’m glad you’re enjoying it so far! Hope you get lots of great pulls! Also, I hope your sub notifications things gets fixed. It happened to me once, so I contacted Akismet, and they were able to fix my problem within a day. Do you know what might have caused it? What did Yahoo do now?!

        Liked by 1 person

        • A Cloud amiibo?? I wonder if that means…no, I won’t even say it for fear of jinxing this marvelous possibility ♥♥♥

Oooooh, I see. They lure you in in the beginning and then once you’re snared, you’ll be willing to spend more money and time. Psh, they are SUCH drug pushers!

I think I’m good! I don’t think it was WP at all, but rather Yahoo probably changed their spam filters. I wound up just highlighting all of the blog notification emails and marking them not spam, but I’ll have to keep my eye on the spam folder for the next few days.

          Liked by 1 person

          • Cloud amiibo because Cloud is a character in Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS and they’re making amiibo for all of them. 🙂

Interesting that it was Yahoo. I didn’t even know they had anything to do with WP. I’ll check my spam notifications right now too.

            Liked by 1 person

              • Oh I think I get it. It’s your emails that are detecting the spam. For some reason, I was thinking it was that your comments were being picked up with the spam detector, which is what happened to me before. Glad you got it worked out!
