The State of the Writer: 5/14/17

A weekly post updated every Sunday discussing my current writing projects and where I stand with them.  This will include any and all work(s) in progress (WIP) be they creative writing, essays/analyses, or reviews of any type.

Progress: Organizing notes & prepping 1st edit of Chapter 10

Last night turned into this morning with an until 4:00am editing prep session.  Fueled by a juice made from magic beans, I organized my notes for Chapter 10 and skimmed the chapter for any blatant issues.  I already know I’ll probably have to split the chapter since it’s over 30 pages and not very well organized.  I also already know I’m going to cut a lot of things out and fix/alter ideas I had while writing that don’t seem to stellar now.  While the above picture of the Great General isn’t the one I’m going to use for the cover, it might end up being one where his one wing is featured, since the last chapter ended in a scattering of feathers.

When I have extensive notes to incorporate into a chapter, I don’t always know the best way to go about it, so last night was a bit of a brainstorming session.  I decided on this order of operations:

  1. Skim the chapter for blatant issues.
  2. Review and organize notes.
  3. Complete the first edit.
  4. Integrate notes into the chapter.
  5. Write full chapter summary and summary to post.
  6. Complete second and any subsequent edits afterwards.

It all looks so neat and tidy, but editing can be such sloppy work.  So far I’ve done steps 1 and 2, and I’m hoping to work on 3 tonight.  With any luck, I’ll do as much of a cut as I did in Chapter 8, leaving me with 4000+ less words to worry about.

Also, because I’m editing and posting this piecemeal, I often still go back and fix up chapters that have already been posted.  Critiques and revelations can come at any time, so I am planning on reposting chapters that have been reedited/corrected, and I’ll let you know when I do.

world-of-final-fantasy

This has been completed and scheduled for (Final Fantasy) Friday.  It should be up first thing that morning, but I’ll probably still do my weekly FF question.  I suppose this could be the question though: What did you think of World of Final Fantasy?  We’ll see.  Technically, it should count as an FFF post, and you can’t accuse me of being lazy since I’ve been working on the review for over a month 😉

What are you currently working on?  Is it a creative writing project, essay, review, or something else?  Have you just started something new or are you wrapping up a long term project?

  2. Yes, I remember that evil little cliffhanger at the end of Chapter 9… It sounds like you’ve got your editing routine down really well! *waits patiently*

  3. Hey! Speaking of editing … Just wanted to ask if you managed to get the updated version of Ewan Pendle yet? If not, let me know and I’ll email it to you 🙂

  4. I’m interested to hear your thoughts on World of Final Fantasy, it is a game that I’ve been interested in but yet to pull the trigger on.

As for me, I’m working on a retro-revisit/review of the original Final Fantasy on the NES, maybe a review of Yooka-Laylee too, and possibly a blog post about my thoughts on the first season of Black Mirror, which I just watched.

    • The review is scheduled to post Friday morning! In a nutshell though I’d say it’s very worth your time! I played for over 200 hours, so I definitely got my money’s worth.

Oooh I’d love to read that! I have a review of it myself as part of my ongoing (re)play and review project. I’m up to IV and should’ve started playing V months ago, but have been distracted by other games. I can’t play more than two at a time, and I’m currently at my limit.

I enjoyed the Banjo Kazooie games and have heard decent things about Yooka-Laylee, but I’d probably end up watching that since the camera angles on BK gave me a headache. Black Mirror has been on my watch list for a while. So many shows to catch up on…

      • My commentary on Yooka-Laylee is not going to be overly positive.

A friend of mine has been insisting I watch Black Mirror for a couple months now. It is extremely dark and cynical (at least the first season was) but super well done.

  5. The Final Fantasy review was very good and detailed. It had more words than a years worth of my posts haha.

I think most people will enjoy it… although Tama fans may disagree.
