First I need to say that I found this list of questions through two of my blogger buddies: Cheap Boss Attack and Athena | AmbiGaming. CBA answered all of his questions in one fell swoop, while Athena is still in the midst of hers. You should check both of them out and get in on the happenin’ conversation 🙂
I’m going to do something different from both and them and post a question and answer every day this month as June has 30 days. My goal was to do this in April, my birthday month, since it has the same day count, but I didn’t have enough time in March to prepare, so I figured I’d want until the next month with the proper number. I hope you enjoy and conversation/discussion is encouraged!
Day 1: Very first video game.
Hm, well this is a tough one, and it’s pretty bad to struggle with the very first question of a test. I started playing video games when I was around the age of three, and since I’m 37 years old now, that’s quite a tidy bit of time to look back upon. My first system(s) was ColecoVision/Atari, but for the very first game my tender little self played, it’s anyone’s guess. All of those early cartridges (Pitfall, Asteroid, Centipede, Adventure, Brain Games, etc.) just run together in my mind.
Then there were also some computer based games like King’s Quest that I enjoyed before I eschewed PC gaming for more console based, but that was probably after I first played Coleco/Atari.
The Nintendo Entertainment System came out in 1985 when I was five years old, and I believe we got our first one when I was six. I certainly remember the first game I played on that:
I’m sure this was a “first game” for many a player, and I’m going to go with SMB as my unofficial first video game.

I think my very first game was Duck Hunt. My aunt and uncle had it and I played every chance I had when I was over there.

I used to do the same thing. Me and my brother were so jealous of our dad because he didn’t even have to use the sight! That’s when we realized our dad had clearly used a gun before, which we should’ve known since he’d been in the air force so obviously *face palm*

Woo!! I’m excited for the entire month of June now!! haha
I’ve already blathered on about my first game in the most weird way possible, with my crazy definitions and whatnot, but I appreciate that Asteroid/Centepede/etc all blend together, because they kinda do.
I was also a pretty big “Pong” fan. Also, this other game I don’t remember the title of, in which you “traveled” to other planets, typed in your height and weight, and then the game told you how much you weighed on that planet and how tall you’d be based on the gravity. This was on an Apple IIe, I believe, so we were at the height of “green text on black screen” graphics. There was even a little pixelated person, which was sort of cute haha.

I felt some deja vu, because I think I commented a lot of these on yours! The kind of did blend together for me lol, and the ones I really liked, I can’t remember the names of.
I remember the Apple IIe! We had those in school. My Oregon Trail days. I can’t remember how often I died of dysentery.

Yes! My dad was always into technology, so eventually we had one *in our house* (we were so cool), but only the one at school had Oregon Trail on it… We just had that planet thing haha
…Caulk the wagon and watch your oxen die… or something like that.

My first system was the Atari 2600 and I’m going to guess it was probably either Pac-Man or The Empire Strikes Back. I’m going to go with ESB just because like now, I was a complete Star Wars dork, even then at like five or six years old.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with that! I didn’t get into Star Wars until I was well into my adult years. I remember my dad liked it, but I was more of a fantasy fanatic more than sci-fi, though Star Wars is not entirely sci-fi in the least. To me it was though because it took place in outer space lol. It was actually TFA that really got me into the franchise, though Clone Wars was already doing a good job of that. I like the original trilogy and did as soon as I watched them as an dult.

I honestly cannot remember what my first game was. Given that my dad owned an Atari 2600 I guess it must have been Space Invaders.

That’s exactly how I am. All of those earlier games just blur together. Not that I didn’t like them, but we’d play like 10-20 in one day when we had the collection, so I can’t remember what the first one I saw/played was.

Same! It took at least a month or so before I even knew Mario could run. Then I only wanted to play as Luigi, so I’d kill player 1 and let Luigi get the girl.

Luigi was my favorite in SMB2, er, too! I felt like he could be difficult to control, but it was worth it for his jumping ability. Also the way his feet pedaled the air was adorable. I think I saw either a Mario only or Princess only playthrough once. She was my second favorite character, and I just remembered being so happy that there was a female character I could play ♥

I used to adore playing as Princess Toadstool too! Usually when I play, I do the equality run so everyone is used the same number of times. The only character I think I’d have trouble finishing the game with is Toad. He sucks so much!

Toad was the worst character for me,too. He’s too quick, but doesn’t just that high or that far. I’d be more than likely to end up in a ditch lol. He can pick up vegetables quickly to compensate, but I don’t think it’s enough.

Luigi always got the short end of the stick. For way too long he was just a palette swap of Mario. I’m glad that SMB2 gave him a different look that’s pretty much stuck around.

I think it was the starter game for many people! I’m curious if anyone’s first game is Sonic the Hedgehog, though he’s Genesis, right? Mario/NES is more equivalent to the SMS.

I think there were Sonic games also released for the SMS, but I’m not sure if that was in North America at all. I know in Brazil and some other parts of the world, games for the Genesis were ported to the SMS. I can’t remember why though.

These challenges are always fun to read, so I’m stoked to have a new post every day to fall back on! I’m really bad about that kind of thing, which is why I said to hell with it and did it as one big post.
My first game was Super Mario Bros. I played it at my babysitter’s house after she had gotten an NES for her and her son for Christmas the year the console released. I was awful and it took a while for the concept of video games to make sense — watching something move on TV that I controlled overloaded my 4-year-old brain lol. I eventually got the hang of it, became obsessed, and my parents gave me an NES of my very own! It’ll always be the game that got me into gaming and the one that dethroned my gaming virginity.

I thought about doing it all in one day, too! I planned this out throughout May and scheduled the first ten days tonight after I put up 1 and 2. I just have to remember to throw in the links.
Another SMBer! I know it’ll be a first for many people. I never beat it, but I still played it all the time. For a while we only had that and the Duck Hunt it came with. Then we slowly got more games, and Blockbuster was still relevant so we’d rent them, too.

I was a one year old toddler when my mother let me play Super Mario for the first time in 1990. I loved it.

Your mother is a wise woman. You’ve got me beat by two years on when you started, too o.O I think that’s the youngest I’ve ever heard anyone playing! My friends little boy was able to unlock and find things on my iPhone when he was two, but one is impressive.

I remember hiding under the covers and playing Super Mario when I was supposed to be sleeping :). I was really, really young when I was introduced to games. I fell in love with them and I’ve been gaming all my life.

I was 5 years old and the game was Taz-mania on the SNES (not to be confused with the more terrible Sega Genesis game of the same name). It was kind of like a running simulation with Taz from Looney Toons. Young me loved it! The circumstances around me playing it are kind of depressing (GO AWAY feelings, haha). Video games have always been a big part of my life ever since. They have helped me overcome so many of life’s trials 🙂

I’ve never played or heard of that! I do recall the Roadrunner game and Tiny Toons AND Animaniacs, now that I’m thinking of cartoon based games.
Video games are tied up with a lot of emotions for me, too, nor do I think we’re the only gamers to say that.

I would definitely say Super Mario Bros., even though before I got my NES I’ve played a few games on the Spectrum (Pssst and Daley Thompson’s Decathlon). I also had one of the Game&Watch but I don’t remember if it was before or after I got the NES…

Oh man! I’m going to need to marathon all of these questions right now! Super Mario Bros. was also my unofficial first game, though it could have also been Tetris. Either way, it was on the NES (or Game Boy). See? I have no idea either, so don’t feel bad. 😛

Right?! I know my first game was something on that older system, but those are all a blur. I remember playing Tetris so much I’d still see it when I closed my eyes. It was ridiculous.

Super Mario World was the first real game that I dove into and beat when I was younger. Everything else on the NES were games that I remember fondly, but wasn’t very serious about until after I had an SNES.

That’ll give you plenty of time to prepare! I wanted to do it in April for my birthday month, but March was too busy. I took my time and drafted then scheduled the posts. It would take forever if I try to draft and post one a day.

I grew up with the SNES, so my first game was definitely one of the Super Mario Bros. games. I had Super Mario World as well as All-Stars, so it is probably one of those.

SMW is one of the greatest games I’ve ever played. I could hop on that right now and/or watch a Let’s Play. Rainbow Road was an absolute beast!
