<–The State of the Writer: 5/28/17 The State of the Writer: 6/11/17–>
A weekly post updated every Sunday discussing my current writing projects and where I stand with them. This will include any and all work(s) in progress (WIP) be they creative writing, essays/analyses, or reviews of any type.
Project: Story
Title: The Broken Rose
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Type: Fanfiction (FFVII) Novel
Current Word Count: 267,343
Prior Word Count: 267,039
Word Difference: +250
Status: Editing
Progress: 1st edit of Chapter 10
Because I’m a glutton for punishment, I decided to elaborate on Aeris’s nightmare in this chapter. Ugh, I needed something funny to do after writing that, and I’m not completely finished with the section updates yet. There’s obviously going to be an aftermath to it.
I’m still not sure what I’m going to do about the chapter breaks or if I’m going to do anything at all, and yes, I’m still on the first edit *sigh* I figured it makes sense to add as much as I can do now before doing subsequent edits. I’d like to finish up the additional parts tonight, but I got a really late start, and I have so much to do.
Quote: Sleep took her quickly under emerald watch, and Sephiroth then shut his eyes. Not to rest as he had said, but rather to think and plan. What he would make her. What books he would buy. What jewelry she might like.
Project: Book Reviews
Title: Various
Status: Planning
I still have The Raven King, Eidolon, and A Father’s Protection to review in that order. I also just finished Hyrule Historia, but I’m not going to write a separate review post for that; I’ll just talk about it in my next State of the Reader weekly. I’ll probably put whatever I say on Goodreads though.
I haven’t even prepped The Raven King yet, and I’m hoping to get to that tonight, too.
What are you currently working on? Is it a creative writing project, essay, review, or something else? Have you just started something new or are you wrapping up a long term project?

Do you have an editor or do you edit your own material?
If you are the sole editor, then I commend you. I don’t think I could ever let a piece go. How do you know when good is good enough?
Posts are always a work in progress for me. I change them post posting, though I’m mortified when I find glaring errors. If I obsess over the posts, they’d never get into the world where they belong. Emails, however, I obsess over. I take a half hour to send a two-sentence message.

I edit my own material because right now I’m writing fanfiction, but with original stories, I edit myself, too, and I’ll swap with friends or get beta readers. How do I know if it’s good enough? Well…I read aloud and if it sounds right I go with it, and the beta reader thing is a great resource, too. Having another pair of eyes look at the work is a great way to pick up things you might have missed. Also letting it sit for a bit so you can think about it is another way to remove yourself. It’s hard because you’re so close to your own writing, but there are definitely ways to look at it subjectively (in part).
I HATE the glaring errors, and I find them even in things I’ve edited numerous times. It’s mortifying. And I’ll still find some error afterwards, and I want to bang my head against a wall.

An editor’s job is never done (hence 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. Edition), but you have to let go at some point. I was curious whether you give yourself a time limit or a set amount of passes or, ….
That beta thing sounds great. Tell me more about it.

I really like the quote, by the way.

Thank you! I try to pick out something interesting that won’t give too much away. I got a late start today. Chronic fatigue is a pain, so I just kind of found the first line I liked and popped it in.

That picture of the Great General and flower girl is so heartwarming 🙂 I commend you on your mad editing skillz! I can’t wait to read the final results.
Also slow down on the amazing book reviews, woman! It’s your fault my reading backlog is growing out of control, haha.

I think I used that picture for one of Norther’s Lights’ chapter covers, but I don’t recall using it for my SOTW, and I’m kinda “uhhhhh” on what picture to use lately heh.
I know! I’m still four books behind with my reviews. I just finished Hyrule Historia, and even though I said I wasn’t going to do a full review, I decided after I posted that I am. I have the notes and it shouldn’t be too long.
I disavow any blame for this :p

Do you create the illustrations too?

I wish! Alas, no, I have no talent for visual arts. I have to use the work of others, and if I can find the source I always put a link.

I know people who do that kind of art if you are ever interested.

I’m sorry. My autocorrect went temporarily insane! That was supposed to read “I do love that quote!”
