The State of the Gamer: 6/6/17

<–The State of the Gamer: 5/30/17          The State of the Gamer: 6/13/17–>

A weekly post updated every Tuesday detailing my current gaming projects.  I have quite a backlog of games to either play or watch, and I’m hoping a weekly article will assist with my progress as my other accountable posts have done with reading and writing.
I have an account at Grouvee, which is a essentially Goodreads for gamers, so please feel free to friend me there!

Title: Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius
Series: Final Fantasy
Genre: RPG – Fantasy
Developer: Square Enix
Platform(s): iOS, Android
Release Date: June 29, 2016
Date Purchased: March 21, 2017

I’m still playing this almost every night, but I’m not religiously logging in on a daily basis.  The story is still really interesting, and I have a ton of Missions again.  The Giant of Babil vortex quest is quite compelling, but I think I’ve gotten as far as I’m going to get with the Titan raid.  I may do the Crystal Tower a few more times (if it’s still there), but I think I’m going to wean myself off of this (as I was saying in the last post).  I eventually will, but I’m a Taurus…we do things kind of slowly hehe.

Title: The Room Three
Genre: Puzzle, Mystery
Developer: Fireproof Games
Platform(s): iOS, Android
Release Date: 2015
Date Purchased: May 28, 2017
Date Started: May 28, 2017

As odd as this might seem to say, this is not a game I play too late.  There are some, well not horrifying, but more like startling, scary things like finding a skull inside of a dive helmet.  It’s a just a little bit creepy.

I really want to start Type-0, but I’m not at liberty to play the PS4 whenever time allows me.  I may see about getting one for myself.  Maybe if I get one that doesn’t have as much memory it won’t be that expensive *adds it to list*

Games Currently Watching

Title: Phantasy Star
Series: Phantasy Star
Genre: RPG – Fantasy/Science Fiction
Developer: Sega
Original Platforms: Sega Master System
Other Platforms: Sega Genesis, Wii Virtual Console
Original Release Date: December 20, 1987
Let’s Player: Hungry Goriya
Date Started: March 24, 2017

Alis and crew seem to be doing well for themselves in the vehicle department!  Now they have a hovercraft and a land rover (in addition to the spacecraft piloted by the adorable Hapsby), though there are still enemies to face in both of those.  It reminds me of the vehicle you get in FFVII that breaks down right outside of Cosmo Canyon.  It was quicker than walking, but it wasn’t like riding a chocobo; you’d still have to deal with random battles.

Title: Mass Effect III
Series: Mass Effect
Genre: Action RPG – Sci-Fi
Developer: BioWare
Original Platform(s): Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3
Original Release Date: March 6, 2012
Let’s Player: Olizandri
Date Started: January 23, 2017

I think Shepherd and crew are back at the Citadel handing in missions, but it’s been a few days since I’ve watched so don’t quote me.

Title: Out of This World/Another World & Heart of the Alien
Series: N/A
Genre: Cinematic platformer, action-adventure
Developer: Delphine Software
Original Platform(s): Various
Original Release Date: 1991
Let’s Player: MikeNnemonic
Date Started: May 13, 2017

Goddamn it!  I forgot to watch any of this again.  I don’t have it my to-do list, and it’s not in progress, so I don’t get any update emails.  I’m going to try to remember to watch an episode or two before I turn on ME3

Miscellaneous

I still haven’t found a Switch, and my 3DS hookup hasn’t gotten back to me in nearly a month. I want to add Xbox 360 or XBone to my wish list, but I’m not sure which one would be best.  I really only want it so I can play Lost Odyssey, which is a 360 game.  I’m assuming the XBone is backwards compatible?  Should I spring for that or just get a 360 to satisfy my JRPG craving?

What are you currently playing and/or watching? Is it something new or old?  Is it a first time run or a replay?  What’s the genre?  Would you recommend it?  What’s on your radar to play next?

  2. Still playing Dragon Age: Inquisition. Just started to play again after months of not playing any game, mostly due to a depressive state of mind. Thing is, I also want to play Skyrim, Mass Effect (I have 1-3 in a collectors edition), and Kingdom Hearts. Oh, and finish my fifth play through of Kingdoms of Amalur (I may have completely misspelled that. In fact I’m 99% sure I did).

For some reason I have lost my copy of Star Ocean since I moved in 2012. I suppose one of the guys have it, and they probably took it in to trade. Not too worried about that, though. I can buy it used for about $20.

I’m tempted on getting an Xbox that is compatible with Fable too. I played it almost the entire time I was at a family weekend bc my brother had it.

  3. I think Sony mentioned something about dropping the price of the PS4 to $249 this weekend for E3, so now may not be such a bad time to invest in your own console. 500GB is the standard hard drive size, with 1TB being the only other option. I’m not sure if there’s much of a price difference though, as by now the 1TB hard drive may be the new standard. Not 100% sure.

Right now I’m 20 hours deep in Horizon: Zero Dawn, but took a break yesterday to start up Dark Rose Valkyrie (also on PS4). It’s a JRPG I received to review that’s made by the folks behind the Neptunia series.

There’s some neat ideas, like a meteor crashing on Earth and spreading some virus that turns humans and animals into monsters called “chimera,” and an investigation mini-game where one of your teammates is actually a spy, but it’s proving to be your standard overly verbose JRPG with horrible pacing issues and a confusing refusal to push the narrative forward. I’m not enjoying the five hours I played and kind of just want to go back to Horizon lol.

  4. I am fortunate enough to have all 3 of Microsoft’s consoles but they are unfortunately my biggest dust collectors. Microsoft needs more good exclusives! Backward compatibility is really weird on Xbox. Some games work and some don’t. I’m not sure why so I’m not much help, eh? 🙂

    • It seems like the 360 is backwards compatible, and there are a few exclusive JRPGs so that’s what I added to my wish list along with Lost Odyssey. It doesn’t seem to make sense for me to get an XBone since it doesn’t really have a lot of exclusives, and I’m all about the JRPGs!
