The State of the Gamer: 9/5/17

<–The State of the Gamer: 8/29/17          The State of the Gamer: 9/12/17–>

A weekly post updated every Tuesday detailing my current gaming projects.  I have quite a backlog of games to either play or watch, and I’m hoping a weekly article will assist with my progress as my other accountable posts have done with reading and writing.  I have an account at Grouvee, which is a essentially Goodreads for gamers, so please feel free to friend me there!

Title: Final Fantasy Type-0
Series: Final Fantasy/Fabula Nova Crystallis
Genre: Action RPG – Fantasy
Developer: Square Enix
Platform: PlayStation 4
Release Date: October 27, 2011
Date Purchased: May 18, 2017
Date Started: June 18, 2017

Progress: Chapter 2 – Second mission complete

I’m getting more used to the battle system, and I’ve finally figured out how to collect phantoma.  I did the first mission again since I completely failed in picked any of that up.  The second mission was weird.  You had to direct troops between two different cities, Corsi and Aqvi, but I managed to liberate them and keep McTigue (the first city) from falling under Empire control again.  I picked up some random (and expensive) gifts in Corsi, found both l’Cie Crystal lockets (I currently have three since I found the one from McTigue prior), though I was a bit stumped about the woman looking for her puppy in Aqvi.  I thought that was the side question, and I’m still not sure if there’s something else with that.  Why have her ask you to locate the dog if it’s not going to be a mission?  I’m probably going to play some more tonight when I get home from hanging with friends at the diner with the hopes that the coliseum will open up soon.  I have been directed to breed chocobos though…now why does THAT sound familiar 😉

Title: Final Fantasy V
Series: Final Fantasy
Genre: RPG – Fantasy
Developer: Square
Platform: PlayStation
Release Date: December 6, 1992
Date Purchased: Unknown
Date Started: June 17, 2017

Progress: Fire Ship

I did some GP grinding and was able to purchase all of the weapons, armor, and spells I needed before tackling the Fire Ship.  I’ll probably try to get some play time in tomorrow.  I think I’m going to switch peoples’ jobs soon.  Reina might become a Summoner who can use Black Magic, so she’ll be the “Rydia” of my group lol.  Faris may become a Time Mage next, though I kind of want her to learn some more Blue Magic (I think she still can if I keep that ability up though).  I’m thinking Galuf might migrate from White Mage to Sorcerer, and I haven’t quite decided what Bartz will do after Knight.

Title: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Series: Mario Kart
Genre: Racing/Driving
Developer: Nintendo
Platform(s): Wii U, Nintendo Switch
Release Dates: April 28, 2017 (Switch), May 29, 2014 (Wii U)
Date Purchased: August 21, 2017
Date Started: August 26 2017

Progress: 150cc

Well I figured out a better way to track my progress hehe.  I really can’t believe I may need to get a wrist brace to play though.  When did I become this old???

This is literally going to be my life

I am learning how to drift though, and I’m going to bring the system along with me when I go hang out with friends tonight.  There will be some little ones there whom I know will love to play, and while I’ve no wish to give their parents (my friends) the torture of having them beg for a Switch, it’s nice to be able to make children happy 🙂

Title: Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius
Series: Final Fantasy
Genre: RPG – Fantasy
Developer: Square Enix
Platform(s): iOS, Android
Release Date: June 29, 2016
Date Purchased: March 21, 2017
Date Started: March 27, 2017

Progress: Rank 31

I was up until around 2:00 last night making an intricate Excel spreadsheet of Awakening Materials so that I know exactly how much of anything I need and for which character.  It. Was. Quite. Intense.  I had to use two tabs and string them together with formulas.  I’m sure there’s probably an easier way to do it than I did, but I’m happy with it, and that’s all that matters.  A few characters can be Awakened once they’re at the top level, so I’ll probably work on that tonight as well as the Hein Castle Vortex mission.  I need to make sure I have Trance Terra or Dark Fina as my 6th unit since either one of them can do Double Black Magic and cast Ultima.  I can’t wait for my Dark Fina to be at that level.

Original Release Date: August 21, 2007

Progress: 27%

I’m annoyed with YouTube’s update.  Prior to whatever they did, you could go to the list of a playlist’s videos instead of clicking on it and having it go to the first one.  It was really convenient, since you could tell the videos you watched by whether or not there was a “completion” line and where it was..  I don’t know why they took that option away, but I don’t like it.

I’m really loving the aesthetic of this game, and it’s amazing how two stories can occur in a similar setting but have a completely different mien.  SOMA occurs in an underwater facility as well, but it has more of that abandoned, desolate air where there’s the threat of a monster around every corner.  BioShock definitely has its jump scares and monsters in the form of Big Daddies and Splicers, but the Splicers, though murderous, are almost comical in their dialogue and behavior.  BioShock seems more like a city fallen to corruption that happens to be under the waves whereas PATHOS-II collapsed into ruin through an astronomical disaster.  There’s less isolation in BioShock, but there’s still a creep factor especially with the Little Sisters that Chris (the LPer) has opted to save, which I commend him for.  Apparently, most gamers chose to harvest them as opposed to rescue.  The former option nets you more Adam, but the latter has its perks, too.  Also…Adam and EVE.  Love it.

Games Added to Backlog: 1

  1. Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle – I was one of the many people moved by the creator’s tears of joy at E3 this year, but though I wasn’t deriding the crossover, I didn’t really have any interest in the game.  I’ve played one of the older Rabbids games, and they’re amusing for a little while, but really not my thing.  I had no idea this was an SRPG, but thanks to my more informed gaming blogger friends, I’m now in the know!

Total Games in Backlog: 137

Games Purchased This Week: 4

  1. Final Fantasy VI $4.99
  2. Final Fantasy VII $4.99
  3. Final Fantasy VIII $4.99
  4. Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions $4.99

At around $5 a pop, it was hard to turn down this PS sale, and while I own physical copies of VI, VII, and VIII, I like having a digital backup since disks don’t last forever, and my FFVII Is an original.  I was super pumped to finally pick up War of the Lions for PSP though 😀

Miscellaneous

If I manage to beat children tonight in Mario Kart, YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO MAKE FUN OF ME.  If I managed to lose to children tonight in Mario Kart, YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO MAKE FUN OF ME.  *ahem*  That is all :p

In other news, I may finally have a hit on a 3DS, though I was looking at the 2DS XL at around $150.  I can get the 3DS for a little less, and I’ll be helping out a friend.

What are you currently playing and/or watching? Is it something new or old?  Is it a first time run or a replay?  What’s the genre?  Would you recommend it?  What’s on your radar to play next?

  2. I’ve been fiddling around with Wonderboy in Monster Land which is a lot tougher than I thought it’d be for some reason. I’m enjoying it, but I am excited for a time when I can get back to my linear, turn-based RPGs that don’t involve jumping over every pixel on the screen looking for secret sacks of cash. I did beat Master of Darkness (SMS) and came awfully close to finishing Alex Kidd in Shinobi World (also SMS), so I’m just running into the sunset with all those games for the moment. It’s incredibly exciting to finally be able to play through these games! I’m making lots of backlog progress lately :3

I hope you finally do get your hands on a 3DS. I know you’ve been looking for a little while now. I found one recently for a really great deal, so we can be new 3DS friends 🙂

    • I’m getting your Psycho World updates! I’ve been so behind with everything that even my vacation catch up is going slow D: You really do shine with those RPGs, and you tend to play ones I’ve never seen before, so that’s double the reason to look forward to them 🙂

I think the deal is going to go through! He needs to transfer his stuff and I need to wait until I get paid again on the 15th, but I think we’ve struck a deal 😀

      • Awesome! I’m so happy to hear that your 3DS deal is pretty much done and done. Congratulations 🙂 I hope you enjoy it! I’ve been getting some free 3DS games using my Shoppers Drug Mart points. I love free stuff!

Thanks for your kindness. I love RPGs with every fiber of my being and want to take them all in. I need a life separate from my regular working/adult responsibilities life so I can pour 20+ hours into all the games I want to play. Psychic World is thankfully a shorter game that people have described as Mega Man/Metroid-ish, so it’ll be a quick watch for you when you get around to it. I’ve defaulted to a Tuesday update schedule since you pointed out that I seemed to always be uploading on Tuesdays 😛 I’m working on getting my SpellCaster LP sorted out, and I might just start scheduling vids to release every Tuesday so I can get ahead with some content rather than struggling with a heavy workload at the moment.

        • Free stuff is the best thing ever. It’s why I was even more overjoyed with the Xbox 360 I received gratis. Even if he’d given me the older one, I wouldn’t have cared, because at the end of the day, I don’t lose anything!

Ugh me, too. Even on vacation I feel like I don’t have enough time. I spent over eight hours finishing up my FFVII anniversary post, which is an essay. I keep pushing things on my to-do list off to the next day, and before I know it, vacation will be over D:

Tuesdays a good day for updates! It’s when games come out anyway lol.

  3. I didn’t play BioShock until Infinite was released. I played it second, and I was still impressed with it. I like the idea in games that being good requires a personal sacrifice (in this case, getting less ADAM). It’s an interesting way of implementing moral choices, and it makes the decisions have actual weight to them.

  4. There’s no shame in losing to children… those young punks have skillz I tells ya!! *shakes cane*

I finally got around to adding you on the Switch, haha. Let me know if you want to go Mario Karting sometime 🙂

  5. Jennifer actually convinced me to buy a copy of Destiny 2 for her, so I’ll probably be giving that a shot this week. I really haven’t been playing much lately though. Been busy with school, and my internet has been crap (though it has been fixed now, I think). I want to get back into either Shadow of Mordor or another one of my older games though. Maybe Quantum Break? Just Cause 3? Not sure yet.

  6. Rest assured, you are not the only person who has ever used Excel to keep track of their gaming plans. Every time Youtube updates their layout they seem to make functionality worse, although that is the least of the site’s problems. I won’t mock you for losing to kids, as they kick my arse too on Overwatch.

    • I have a sheet for games I’ve played, am playing, finished, and DNF, too! I use Excel at work, so I’ve gotten pretty good at it, plus it’s a fairly user friendly program and, well, the Google 😀

Look…it’s THEIR technology. I can’t even be mad. This particular child was unlocking my iPhone when he was just two. He wants to learn to speak Spanish and Gaelic. I expect great things.

  7. You should be opening up the arena soon in FFT0HD!

I jumped back into FFXIII to chip away at some of the side-quests in chapter 11, but I’ve been juggling it with Mario + Rabbids. I’m digging Rabbids quite a bit (sans Rabbids, of course) but an RPG without a narrative is super weird. It’s fun to play but there’s no dangling carrot to keep me on longer than a mission or two before setting it aside for something else.

I just watched GG Gab’s LP of Silent Hill 4: The Room, which is drastically different for the series (think Simon’s Quest as opposed to the other two traditional Castlevania games on NES — it’s still Castlevania, but very, very different). I wasn’t feeling it for the first half of the game, but the 2nd act ramped up the bizarre. I started watching her Silent Hill Origins LP after, which leads into the original game (as the name implies). I never got around to the game on PSP, although I picked up the $20 PS2 release afterward.

It feels a bit fall outside, despite the humidity in the early day, so I’m in a horror mood.

    Enjoy your games/BioShock LP!

    • It sure did! I think we established that in the other comment though haha. I can’t believe how easy it is to cheat on that. Like were they just not thinking that people wouldn’t play around with time?? Do they not know gamers? We will MacGuyver ANYTHING.

I have never watched any Silent Hill. I may need to remedy that. I worked too long on my SOMA review the other day, and I needed to take a break from horror shenanigans. BioShock is more jump scares and almost more penny dreadful horror, not really scary in that way. The Big Daddy/Little Sister thing is really interesting. I can’t wait to see more about that.

It’s been hovering around the 50-70s around here, though it was humid as hell yesterday. It rained though and actually got rid of the humidity instead of making it worse, which is soooo awful.

  8. I hope you get your 3DS! And no worries about losing to children. I’m always torn between being ashamed when I beat my nephew in a game, and a little relieved that I can *still* beat him in a game (haha).

I finished Mass Effect: Andromeda!!!!!! And it was awesome. I really enjoyed it, despite its rocky start.

Now I’m trying to blast through the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy (I’m in Chapter 10 of the first game)…. I’m also hoping to get through Horizon: Zero Dawn before the end of the year, because I’m planning something cool for next year that might take up a lot of my gaming time….

    • Me too! You know…it really doesn’t bother me in the least, because this is THEIR technology. They were born into a world with it, and they’ll only get better at it. It tells me that I need to practice, because I have more MK8 experts to beat :p

I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I’m kind of sad that BioWare is pretty much pulling the plug on the game. I read an article about how they’re withdrawing support. I’ve heard so many mixed reviews about it with valid points on both side. This is one of those instances where I need to play it myself before I can make any kind of judgment about the game, because there’s just so many opinions.

I need to hop on the FFXIII bandwagon :p LightningEllen much be pleased as punch that people are giving her baby the recognition it deserves ♥

      Ooo secret plans o.O

      • Yeah, I’ll just have to come to terms with the fact that one day I’ll be left behind by technology… but it is not this day 😉

Yes, I agree. It’s a game that deserve to be played and interpreted for yourself, instead of by the internet backlash. I’m very unhappy they pulled support for it because of the whining that followed its release. I mean, I get it, but it’s such a better story than people give it credit for…

Ha! Yeah, join the party!! 😀

        Yes… secret, secret… OoOoOooo haha o.O

        Liked by 1 person

          • Yeah… I mean, I think a lot of people have just dismissed it after all the release drama, but… I think people wanted more Mass Effect trilogy, and this isn’t it. It’s a solid sci-fi game, and has a good story, and has all the interesting characters like the original trilogy, but a game based on exploring and learning about a galaxy while in the shoes of an inexperienced peacekeeper is much different than actively trying to save the galaxy in the shoes of a hardened soldier…

  9. I’ve really been enjoying the Mario + Rabbids game. I’m curious to see what you think of it when you play it. I plan to eventually get Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Maybe we can play a few races together when I do. I had it on Wii U and just couldn’t justify buying it again at full price.

    Liked by 1 person

    • I’d love to race you! I’m not very good, but I have a good time, and that’s really all that matters hehe. I didn’t have an interest in Rabbids, but I’m a fan of RPGs of almost all type, and even action ones are growing on me, so it’s definitely now on my wish list.
