The State of the Gamer: 9/19/17

<–The State of the Gamer: 9/12/17         The State of the Gamer: 9/26/17–>

A weekly post updated every Tuesday detailing my current gaming projects.  I have quite a backlog of games to either play or watch, and I’m hoping a weekly article will assist with my progress as my other accountable posts have done with reading and writing.  I have an account at Grouvee, which is a essentially Goodreads for gamers, so please feel free to friend me there!

Currently Playing: 2

Title: Final Fantasy Type-0
Series: Final Fantasy/Fabula Nova Crystallis
Genre: Action RPG – Fantasy

Progress: Chapter 2 – All the leveling

All of the leveling continues!  I’m free to play PS4 games every Tuesday and Friday now, since my husband bowls the.  I was going to attempt to get up early one of the days on the weekend, but that’s just not happening, and by the time I do wake up, he’s usually immersed in Destiny 2.  But now that Tuesdays and Fridays are open, I’m going to use them for Type-0.

I have four characters left to level to 99 I believe.  I did one tonight, and I could’ve done another, but it takes 30-45 minutes, and, as I’m sure you’re aware of by now, I have much to do in my evenings.  Maybe I’ll get lucky and have some time this weekend to finish that up so I can continue with the game!

Title: Final Fantasy V
Series: Final Fantasy
Genre: RPG – Fantasy
Developer: Square
Platform: PlayStation
Release Date: December 6, 1992
Date Purchased: Unknown
Date Started: June 17, 2017

Progress: Karnak Castle

I haven’t had time to attempt the escape from Karnak Castle again.  I need to write up my own directions beforehand so that I can just go off of those instead of trying to decipher where I need to look next with the walkthrough.  I’d like to say I’m going to go for it this weekend, but we’ll see.  I’m playing games with a friend on Saturday, so who knows what I’ll have time for after that.

Ongoing Games: 2

Title: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Series: Mario Kart
Genre: Racing/Driving
Developer: Nintendo
Platform(s): Wii U, Nintendo Switch
Release Dates: April 28, 2017 (Switch), May 29, 2014 (Wii U)
Date Purchased: August 21, 2017
Date Started: August 26 2017

Progress: 200cc

Let me tell you, Ellen moves like Lightning (not sorry)!  We decided to give 200cc a go, and that shit is intense.  I think I beat her once or twice in an individual race, but ultimately, Lightning wore the crown (as she should, let’s be serious).  There was one race where I was so close.  I could see the finish line…then I got hit by a blue/spiked shell, and I love how they taunt you by spinning around your kart a few times, before knocking your block off.   LightningEllen scooted right past me and onto victory, while I howled in defeat.  Then I laughed uproariously, because it’s all in good fun 😀

I really should just throw out an open invitation to play me in Mario Kart.  Hm, I could probably pin something to my Twitter.  The more I race, the better I’ll get.  Of course I could just play by myself, but I’m much more likely to pick up the sticks if someone is counting on me to do so.  I’m trying to get my brother to buy it, since he now has a Switch, but he picked up BOTW, and, well Switch games are kind of pricey (FYI – my friend’s son, the eight year old who beat me has been bugging her for a console as I suspected/feared.  We both agreed he should ask his grandparents for one for Christmas :D)  Since MK8 isn’t a narrative game, there’s no story for me to continue on with, so the friend incentive will really help out!

Title: Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius
Series: Final Fantasy
Genre: RPG – Fantasy
Developer: Square Enix
Platform(s): iOS, Android
Release Date: June 29, 2016
Date Purchased: March 21, 2017
Date Started: March 27, 2017

Progress: Rank 33

I managed to beat the Veritas of the Heavens.  He’s actually not that hard; the fight is just a bit long.  I used Cecil whom I believe has one more awakening level to go, but he’s fully leveled for the star he’s on; Kuja, who’s fully awakened and leveled; Lasswell, who is fully awakened, but needs to be leveled to his highest, Refia whom I believe is fully awakened, but not leveled; and Vanille whom I think still needs to be awakened one more time.  I was hoping the last’s death limit would make it a shorter fight, but alas the Heavenlord seems immune to death (shock).  I pretty much just had Refia use Curaja every round, and everyone else did their best moves.  It took me around 15 minutes.  His attacks aren’t that strong, I just went into Ambel with trash characters, because I wasn’t expecting to get whaled on :p

I really need to do some awakening materials hunting.  Damn near everyone requires at least 10 litrocks (omg…every time I see the name of that item, I instantly think, “It’s lit!”) and I have like 8.  You also can’t exchange with King Mog for it, which is a total bummer, but I guess they don’t want to make it too easy.  The current raid with Hein the Mage has been easy enough that I might try the Elite level.  If I do, I’ll report back whether I flew or fell.

Currently Watching: 1

Title: BioShock
Series: BioShock
Genre: First Person Shooter – Sci-Fi, Dystopian
Developers: Irrational Games & 2K Australia
Platform(s): Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, iOS
Original Release Date: August 21, 2007
Let’s Player: Christopher Odd
Total Number of Videos: 33
Date Started: August 28, 2017

Progress: 67%

Mr. Odd seemed to really love this game, but I wish there was a bit more narrative or maybe that the narrative was more blatant.  I have a feeling if you don’t purposely find and play those recordings, you just never know what’s going on.  I really want to look at the wiki when I’m done with the LP, but I’m hearing I’ll find out more in the sequels, so I’ll try to hold off an just continue watching.

For some unintentional hilarity, please listen to the below:

Games Added to Backlog: 1

  1. Octopath Traveler – I downloaded the demo for this on the Switch, and I absolutely  love it.  It’s a Final Fantasy with sprites, but in a 3Desque world.  So it’s 2D, but your character can move on a 3D like plain.  It has the Final Fantasy feel e.g. good knight/warrior/general gone bad, though the reasons why are still unknown.  What makes it interesting is you have the choice of eight different characters to pick from, and they each have their own particular skill.  I chose the “retired” knight Sir Olberic.  He can challenge people to duels, which can net you gold and experience.  I’m about to go and take care of some bandits, and I’m hoping the demo goes on for that long.  I’ll give Primrose, the dancer, a try next, and  I’d highly recommend downloading it if you have a Switch. Friends have told me that Primrose’s path is most decidedly not G rated.  Mature audiences ya’ll.  The demo only has those two, and I’m excited to see what that scenario is like, and I can’t wait to preorder this.

Total Games in Backlog: 141

Games Added to Watch List: 1

  1. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater – Thanks to Cheap Boss Attack for this recommendation!  I’ve been wanting to watch MG and MGS for a while now, but I had no idea where to start.  Should I go in order of release?  Should I go chronological by story?  It appears the latter is the recommendation.  CBA also gave me the order of operations for it, so as I finish one, I’ll add the next one to my list.

Total Games on Watch List: 37
Change from Last Week: +1

Games Purchased This Week: 0

Miscellaneous

I think I’ll be getting my 3DS soon, and I’m attempting to persuade my supervisor to sell me his Vita hehe.  He’s on the fence about it, because he’s not sure if he wants to let it go.  We’ll see.  I’m not in a rush.

What are you currently playing and/or watching? Is it something new or old?  Is it a first time run or a replay?  What’s the genre?  Would you recommend it?  What’s on your radar to play next?

  2. MGS3: Snake Eater is my absolute favorite in the series and a great place to get acclimated with the insanity that is Metal Gear Solid. Not sure if you have a Let’s Player in mind for that one, but Cryaotic has a stellar playthrough that’s thorough and hilarious.

I have a busy weekend with homework, so the GF and I are slowly chipping away at the Destiny 2 campaign while I fill in the gaps with Yakuza 0.
