The State of the Gamer: 4/17/18

<–The State of the Gamer: 4/3/18            The State of the Gamer: 5/1/18–>

A weekly post updated every other Tuesday detailing my current gaming projects.  I have an account at Grouvee, which is a site you can use to keep track of your backlog, so please feel free to friend me there!

What I Played

Title: Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius
Series: Final Fantasy
System: Android (Kindle)

Final Fantasy: Brave ExviusThis counts as a “What I Played” in terms of I played it for maybe twenty minutes the other day.  I’d love to keep up with this daily since you’re given rewards every time you log on, and it would be easier to keep up with the story, but I just don’t.  There are still a bunch of characters I haven’t found yet, and I know this because on some of the expeditions you need to have a particular one, and alas, I do not.

What I Watched

Title: Shadow of the Colossus
Series Title: Ico
Let’s Player: Olizandri

I finished watching this and can now finally start working on my review/analysis of all three games.  I’ve seen a few theory videos about them, and I not only think they all take place in the same universe, but also the same location.  The Nest from The Last Guardian is the same place as the temples in both Shadow of the Colossus and Ico just at different points in time.  I know Shadow came before Ico just from the ending of the former, and before watching those two, I’d have said TLG is the last, but now I’m not sure.  It’s possible it could be the first, though that still brings up loads of questions.

Title: Mario & Luigi: Dream Team
Series: Mario, Mario & Luigi, Mario RPG
Let’s Player: Olizandri

The UK or European version calls it Dream Team Bros. for some reason (which the Let’s Player pointed out), but it’s essentially the same game as the one in the states.  I love Mario RPG games and I really love the ones that include his brother Luigi.  He really does not get enough respect, but you should respect a man who can fall asleep anywhere on a whim and upon a stone pillow no less!  The soundtrack is phenomenal, which isn’t surprising since I was impressed with the one in Bowser’s Inside Story and Superstar Saga.  I completely agree with Oliz about there needing to be an RPG that stars Bowser and possibly Peach teaming up to try to rescue the Mario Bros. hehe.  Granted both of them are playable characters in Super Paper Mario, which was awesome, but there should always be more Bowser.

Title: Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar
Series: Ultima
Let’s Player: Hungry Goriya

I didn’t watch nearly as much of this as I should’ve in the past two weeks, and I have quite a lot of catching up to do, but that kind of makes me happy since it means I have quite a lot of time to just enjoy the multiple videos!

What I Bought

  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes in Time – $8.99 @ Square Enix Store (Nintendo DS)
  • Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales – $5.99 @ Square Enix Store (Nintendo DS)

Squeenix kept emailing me about their spring sale where some things were up to 70% off, so I figured it couldn’t hurt to take a look.  I picked up these two games for less than $20.  Now I either have to find my husband’s DS or hope that my 3DS is backwards compatible :p

I don’t include what I add to my backlog anymore, but I did have the pleasure of watching Mr. Panda’s review of Earthlock today at work, which is what prompted me to throw it on there, and since I’ve left a link, you can check it out, too!

Per further above I’d love to know your thoughts on the Ico Series.  Do you think it all takes place in the same locale?  I’m pretty sure Word of God confirmed that it is in the same universe.  What do you think is going on?  How do the three stories tie together?  Do you think Team Ico will continue the saga?

As always, I’d love to know about your gaming adventures, so feel free to brag about them in the comments!

  2. I finished the Dragon Age series and was craving more BioWare (I’m an addict… help!) so I started the Mass Effect series! 10+ hours into the first game so far and really, really enjoying it. I spent a ton of time just reading about the alien races and learning about the universe in the game’s codex menu. Also, I found Liara, voiced by my shero’s actress Ali Hillis. She is always in my squad, and I grin like an idiot every time she says anything, haha. 😀

    • Ahhhh she does, really? Does she use the same voice? Somehow I think that Liara has a more passive voice than your shero hehe. I spent so much time on the Mass Effect wiki just reading about the different alien races and cultures. That got me really into the game like how the Hanar are super polite lol. I’d probably spend all my time reading all the descriptions of each planet in each solar system, too. I love the team of Shepherd, Liara, and Wrex, though Garus isn’t a terrible addition either. If I’m going to play a game with aliens, I might as well have aliens on my team!

      • I can hear the Lightning in Liara, but you are correct, Liara has a much more passive tone. After I shoot the bad guys, her after battle comments make me feel like I’m in an army unit with Lightning, haha. Yeah… laugh away 😛

I love the Hanar! They refer to themselves in public as “this one” but use their names with friends and family. All the little quirks with each race really bring the universe alive! I’ve been rolling with Liara and Ashley, but I sometimes take Garus. Ashley is a badass. I loved her comment when we had to go to a silly strip club area: “A million light years from where humanity began and we walk into a bar filled with men drooling over half-naked women shaking their asses on a stage. I can’t decide if that’s funny or sad.” 😂😂😂

        • She has a witty sense of humor that surprises you lol.

Right?? That’s what I love about the Mass Effect universe. You can tell so much work went into the game, even if it didn’t directly find its way in, the foundation is there.

Humanity is humanity no matter what where we find ourselves :p

  3. My sister finished Shadows of the Colossus, and I loved it! So thought-provoking and mysterious. I haven’t played any of the other games in the series, but I definitely looked at some fan theories. Might try to watch Ico and Last Guardian this summer.

    • The Last Guardian is by far my favorite just because of Trico. He is the most adorable thing I’ve ever seen and the best animated character I’ve ever witnessed. I’ve never seen a more realistic animated character and he’s not even a real creature, but the creators make you believe he is.

  4. I am currently playing Pokemon Blue as I catch up my Ultima IV LP. It’s the first time I’ve seen a Pokemon game this far into the story, and I’m really enjoying it so far. I’m five badges in and raring to go to the end. I’ve also been wanting to stream Faxanadu a lot lately. Lots of little conversations keep coming up about it on Twitter and it’s given me the Faxanadu ants in the pants.
