A weekly post updated every other Tuesday detailing my current gaming projects. I have an account at Grouvee, which is a site you can use to keep track of your backlog, so please feel free to friend me there!
What I Played
Title: Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
Series: Mario, Rabbids
System: Nintendo Switch
This is surprisingly fun, and I say surprisingly only because I’ve never played any Rabbids game before. They remind me of Minions, which I hate much less than the average internet user (I’m also a bit confused why they’re so abhorred besides the propensity of Baby Boomers to share memes of them, which I usually just scroll past. I think the Minions themselves are cute), so their antics don’t bother me. The combination of Mario and the Rabbids actually works, probably because there’s always some crazy shenanigans going on in the Mushroom Kingdom, so an invasion of raving rabbids with a device that can combine two separate things isn’t that far fetched.
I’ve heard the gameplay is like Xcom, but since I’ve never played Xcom, I can’t comment on that. The fights remind me of Disgaea 4 and 5, which I’ve demoed, using grid formations for battle sequences. There’s definitely strategy involved, but you’re not too penalized if you mess up, which is great for the demographic its geared towards and not-go-great SRPG players. I can’t wait to hop back on the sticks tonight!
Title: Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius
Series: Final Fantasy
System: Android (Kindle)
Behold my tale of woe. Sephiroth arrived this week as a summon, on May 11 to be exact. I’d been saving up my Rare Summon Tickets for months since I’d caught word of his arrival around this time. I had around 55 RSTs, 47 Friend Summon Tickets, and 3 10+1 Summon Tickets. I also had around 8000 Lapis. I did not manage to draw Sephiroth even after going through all of these and spending all of my Lapis in a last ditch effort at another 10+1 Summon. Now they have what’s called a Step-Up Summon, which is where you spend 5000 Lapis each time and you take a step up towards a guaranteed summon of either the Great General or some other character called Lina (or something). I managed to summon her randomly, and she has the same probability as Seph. My one friend who I’m kind of annoyed with managed to get him, so I’m at least able to use him at least once a day (actually three since two more friends have him), but it’s not the same. I think I’m going to spend actual money for more Lapis and try to get him using the Step-Up method. I’m sure this is Squeenix’s plan. There’s a 3000 Lapis deal where you can get all the accoutrements to level him up, which I’m planning on picking up regardless just so I have it when I finally am bequeathed the Great General. If I wasn’t in such an apathetic state right now, I’d be more disappointed and rage-y, but I think it’s more of an obligatory “I must have him” that’s driving me on. How else am I going to have my White Haired Pretty Boy Band with Kuja and Cecil if I don’t have Seph? There might also be an Aeris summon at some point, and those two have to be together.
What I Watched
Title: Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
Series: Mario, Mario & Luigi, Mario RPG
Let’s Player: Olizandri
I finished this last week. It was another fun Mario & Luigi adventure involving their younger selves as well. I kind of wish I’d watched this before Dream Team, since there’s a reference to it in that later one, and I would’ve gotten it. I also kind of wish the Shroobs had been more than just an evil, alien army bent on invasion, and they had a better reason for attacking the Mushroom Kingdom, but Mario games do tend to have simple plots.
What I’m Watching
Title: Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar
Series: Ultima
Let’s Player: Hungry Goriya
I’ve been keeping up with this pretty well and there’s a new video out!
Title: Mario + Luigi: Paper Jam
Series Title: Mario, Mario + Luigi, Mario RPG, Paper Mario
Let’s Player: Olizandri
I was watching a Let’s Play of God of War, but I really missed seeing a Mario RPG and just couldn’t resist. I completely forgot about this game, and I’m so glad I realized Oliz did an LP of it. It’s a mashup of Mario + Luigi and Paper Mario, and I’m loving it so far. As for GOW, my brother gave it to me for my birthday, so I’m going to play it on my own first and probably finish Christopher Odd’s Let’s Play afterwards, similar to what I did for Super Mario Odyssey.
What I Recieved
- God of War – As fore mentioned my big bro came through for my birthday! I mentioned I was going to buy it, and he told me to hold off since he hadn’t gotten me a present yet. I’ve been meeting him, his wife, and their friends at Chickie + Pete’s the past two Fridays for crab fries (aka fries with Old Bay seasoning: delicious) and whatnot, so last week he gave me the game. I haven’t fired it up yet, and my husband might get to it before I do, but I’m excited to play it.
So sleepy. What games have you enjoyed this week? Do any of them involve sleep?

My boyfriend is also trying, with increased levels of annoyance, to get Seph. I think he got Lina, too . . .

I honestly wish they’d allow you to pay a particular fee to get a beloved character. Like I’d pay a good deal of money to guarantee having Sephiroth. It is a bit irritating how up to chance it is especially for a favorite.

I agree; I don’t think it’s a good system.

It’s terrible, but I somehow managed to draw the Great General 😀

I really need to get into the Paper Mario series. Those games look like so much fun! I played a demo of what eventually became The Thousand Year Door and didn’t love it, but I’m sure the finished product is way better than that. I’m also glad you’ve been keeping up with Ultima IV. I’m hoping to finish streaming the game sooner than later so I should be wrapping up the LP sometime in June if all goes well. Thanks so much for watching! I know it’s not the most exciting game.

I think you’d love them. They’re so much fun and the battles are more action-y than typical RPGs, but it’s done in such a way that it’s more trigger buttons so people who like turn based like me. I’ve seen the first one and played Thousand Year Door. I was shocked at how dark the ending was.
I don’t think it’s boring at all! I love the word prompts with characters and how it’s such a payoff when you can get that. It’s actually really fun to watch at work or relaxing before going to bed.

I think I’d really like them too. I just have to get around to playing them one of these days. I’ve played a bit of Super Mario RPG way back when my cousin lent me his copy, but I never finished it. I think the Paper Mario games are similar right?
And I’m glad you don’t find the game boring. I try to cut out all the boring bits like shuffling my characters out of dungeon rooms or casting repetitive spells. I’m so sad I’m almost done the game now. I’m loving it so much more now that I know what is going on and how everything works. It’ll be sad to put it away.

They’re very similar! The RPG elements are more action-y, which appease a lot of people who aren’t as fond of turn based. It’s a little bit more exciting.
For some reason I thought it would be much longer! I don’t know why, but I think it just had a lot of early set up before you kind of fast track to the end

I haven’t played anything but I’ve been peeking at my husband’s screen while he plays Breath of the Wild and now God of War. Both seem really good. The graphics on God of War are amazing.

God of War is freaking awesome looking. I got it for my birthday and am so happy there’s an easy setting, because I’m kind of a noob with games like that :p

My husband’s playing it on the difficult setting but there has been a shit ton of swearing lol.

If you’re not swearing, you’re not playing it properly!

Man, that sounds A LOT like me trying to get Tharja in FE Heroes while the people I knew playing it had gotten her rather early. It felt nice to finally pull her, but then the draw was gone since I had already done the other stuff.
Enjoy God of War! I picked it up as well, but I won’t be starting it until I finish this next review. I also want to watch Cry play through NieR Automata since, judging by his thumbnails, he’s on the third playthrough.

I managed to get Sephiroth the other day, and all I could say was “Fucking finally!” I bought the 3000 Lapis bundle to level him up, but I still need those Burst Pots to get him up to par. I’m a patient woman though. I should probably get rid of some of the units I have since I never use them anyway. I am a bit pissed that the one Vortex mission in Mt. Nibel to get his long coat is hard as hell. I guess I don’t have good enough characters or characters leveled enough.
I’m not sure when I’ll start it either! I’m playing Mario + Rabbids right now and really enjoying it. I need to get better at battling lol. I nearly died fighting the first mid-boss. Thankfully the game is really forgiving.
I’m avoiding that LP, because I want to play it myself, but I’d probably watch it afterwards or after I’d given up lol.

Woo! Congrats!
Mario + Rabbids was a lot tougher than I anticipated. I definitely used the Easy Mode toggle for every battle and still struggled at certain spots.

That sassy Peach Rabbid on the game cover is utterly amazing. lol
I got to race in a Mario Kart 64 tournament this past weekend which was a lot of fun. It’d been a while since I got to sit down and play a game. Too long, in fact. But I did manage to win the tournament against some really good racers, so that was nice. 😀

That’s awesome! I haven’t played the Switch Mario Kart is quite a few months. I’m not very good, but I always have fun 😀
