The State of the Gamer: 6/12/18

A weekly post updated every other Tuesday detailing my current gaming projects.  I have an account at Grouvee, which is a site you can use to keep track of your backlog, so please feel free to friend me there!

What I Didn’t Finish

Title: Final Fantasy V
Series: Final Fantasy
System: PlayStation 3

Date Started: June 17, 2017
Date DNF: May 27, 2018

I called it quits after the Ancient Library.  The job system is just not working for me.  I like the characters and enjoy the story, but it started being a chore to play it.  I told myself if I could find a decent Let’s Play, I’d concurrently watch V while starting VI, and that’s just what I did.

What I Played

Title: Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius
Series: Final Fantasy
System: iPhone (8)

Final Fantasy: Brave ExviusDate Started: March 27, 2017

I finally managed to pull Sephiroth and level him up completely.  I still have to collect tons of Pots, which raise stats and Trust Moogles, which give you either a special move or weapon when you reach 100%.  Sephiroth’s is fittingly the Masamune so I definitely want to do that.  I also managed to summon Cloud, but no one cares about him :p

I’ve also made some progress in the story, which I have a hard time remembering since there are so many other things to do.  It’s like the main story is more of a side quest because the game is so involved.  I’m now playing it on my phone, which is so much better.  It’s not crashing anymore like it was doing on my Kindle.  I just don’t think that device was made for playing games, though I had little to no issue with The Room Series.  I was pretty much just waiting to get a new phone so I could put it on there to see if it would work better, and my hopes were confirmed.  It’s also more convenient since I have a data plan on my phone, as opposed to on my Kindle, so I can play it anywhere.

Title: Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
Series: Mario, Rabbids
System: Nintendo Switch

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle coverDate Started: May 14, 2015

I’ve slowed down a bit on this.  I enjoy it, but I’m still getting the hang of the battle system.  I’m hoping it will get easier as I obtain more weapons, characters, and level up.  If not I can always fall back on a trusty Let’s Play!

Title: The Room: Old Sins
Series Title: The Room
System: iPhone (8)

The Room: Old Sins cover imageDate Started: Unknown

I hope they never stop making these games.  They’re fun, challenging, and a little creepy.  This one centers around a dollhouse, and the puzzles in each room are interconnected.  You might have to find something in one room to use in another, and the outside of the doll house reveals secrets when you place objects where they belong.  I highly recommend this to any puzzle game lovers out there.

Title: Final Fantasy VI
Series: Final Fantasy
System: PlayStation 3

Final Fantasy VI cover imageDate Started: June 2, 2018

I forgot how enjoyable this game is to play, but it’s been a number of years since I’ve played it so you can’t fault me.  This was my first Final Fantasy, the game that got me into the series when I was a teenager.  I’ve been diligently playing it every night, and I look forward to it.  With V I felt like i had to force myself to play because I just didn’t jive with its job system, and there were even some parts of IV I had to gear up for, but VI has the perfect balance of difficulty and fun with set jobs (which I find I like better) and intriguing characters despite how many of them there are (Chrono Cross should’ve really take cue from that).  I really think Squaresoft (now of course Squeenix) figured out the perfect difficulty.  FFIV is a great game with a wonderful story, but it is hard.  There are some points where you have to heal after every battle because enemies are hitting you for 100s of HP when you only have around 500 or so.  Granted I did have my first Game Over in VI the other day when I ran afoul of a Telstar in the Imperial camp near Doma, but I think I was just unfortunate.

I’m currently in Nikeah after traversing the Veldt and Serpent’s Trench.  Sabin’s scenario is definitely the longest, and I saved it for last.  I’m hoping to make it to the cliffs of Narshe to fight the Empire for the Esper before the night is done!

What I Watched

Title: Mario + Luigi: Paper Jam
Series Title: Mario, Mario + Luigi, Mario RPG, Paper Mario
Let’s Player: Olizandri

I’m sad that I’m out of Olizandri Mario Let’s Plays 😦  He hasn’t done Sticker Star yet, and even though I’ve heard horrendous reviews of that game, Oliz would make it fun.  I wish he had more Final Fantasy Let’s Plays, but I think he only has IX.  I’m hoping I either find or he plays another game/series that I enjoy.  His voice acting is excellent.

What I’m Watching

Title: Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar
Series: Ultima
Let’s Player: Hungry Goriya

We are almost to the end, and there were two videos in just as many days.  The Avatar as her seven companions have breached the Stygian Abyss.  If I’m lucky, maybe there will be another for me to watch tomorrow at work 🙂

Title: Final Fantasy V
Series: Final Fantasy
Let’s Player: Chronos

Date Started: May 27, 2018

Chronos is a smaller LPer, but he’s pretty decent.  He reads the dialogue and makes an attempt to do different voices.  It was a little bit annoying when he gave this one character Krile a valley girl accent and added words like “totally” and “like” to her dialogue, but for the most part he’s pretty solid.  He’s really good at the job system and really good at explaining it, which is even better.  He’s playing the mobile version of the game, not the original, but the basics are the same.

What I Bought

  • Ultima VII – $0.99 @ Gog.com
  • Ultima VIII Gold Edition – $0.89 @ Gog.com
  • Ultima IX: Ascension – $0.89 @ Gog.com

It’s really hard to turn down games that are less than a dollar.  Even if you hate them, they were still less than a latte at Starbucks.

I’m so sorry I missed last week!  I was super bummed about it, too, because as you can see I’ve been doing a lot of gaming.  I was so excited to start playing Final Fantasy VI, because I’m making progress in my FF (Re)Play Project.  I was half-wondering/hoping that the FFVII Remake would be out by the time I got to that, which is hysterical.  I think Squeenix is projecting 2023 or something?  Unfortunately, I missed their live presentation for E3.  I thought it was going to be around 2-3, but I miscalculated what PDT meant for me, because it was actually at 7 in the morning here.  I knew I wasn’t going to be up for that, and even if I was, I should be getting ready for work.  Thankfully, I receive updates from them, so I can just watch it later…not like they mention anything about VII anyway *grumble*

What were you most looking forward to with E3?  What were you most excited about that you saw?  I’m actually most interested in what my blogging buddies have to say, since that will save me having to weed through the chaff lol.  Discuss in the comments!

  2. I’m sorry you gave up on Final Fantasy V. It’s one of the games I’ve been itching to play for a long while, so I’m hoping I have better luck pushing through it than you did in the end. I will check out that LPer. I’m always looking for other people playing games I wouldn’t normally play myself!

I love seeing those Ultima games head into your backlog. The Ultima disease is spreading 😀

    • If you play it I”ll definitely watch! I just couldn’t get my head around the job system, and it started turning into more of a chore. You might like it though! A lot of people really do, so it’s quietly popular as opposed to some of the more prevalent ones like VI and VII.

  3. The Square presentation was… weird. Most of what they showed had already been shown and they ended with the exact same Kingdom Hearts trailer as they had for Microsoft.

Anyway, I’m glad KH3 finally got a release date, hopefully they hit it, and I was sad that FF VII didn’t appear at either the Square briefing or the Sony one but considering the news about how its been a very troubled development, I guess I shouldn’t expect to see anything for another decade or so.

I wasn’t wowed by anything at E3 this year, a lot of reveals and leaks prior to the show took a lot of the surprise away, but I did come out excited for The Elder Scrolls Blades on mobile later this year.

    • That’s what I heard. I mean I’ve been seeing stuff about KH3 so them talking about that wasn’t really a huge surprise, and that’s ALL they talked about (from what I heard). The last I heard about the FFVII Remake was 2023 at the earliest. Knowing Squeenix, it’s probably more like 2045. I haven’t heard about a troubled development. I’ve been trying to avoid anything about it. I don’t know why. I’m just kind of…I don’t know. I definitely want to play it (and I sure as hell preordered it lol), but yeah, I don’t know.

  4. Congrats on getting the Great General! 🙂 I… didn’t pay attention to E3 at all this year. Oh well! I have more than enough games to play already, haha.

    • I missed the Squeenix showcase, but I heard I really didn’t miss a lot. I started watching the MIcrosoft one, but after the Ori trailer, I got a bit bored. I’m much more interested in the highlights so I don’t have to weed through everything.

Since I got a new phone, it’s been SO much easier to play FFBE. I’m trying to catch up with the story. As for my Seph, I need to get more of those enhancement pots, but they’re hard to come by :\
