The State of the Gamer: 8/7/18

A weekly post updated every other Tuesday detailing my current gaming projects.  I have an account at Grouvee, which is a site you can use to keep track of your backlog, so please feel free to friend me there!

What I Played

Title: Final Fantasy VI
Series: Final Fantasy
System: PlayStation 3

Final Fantasy VI cover imageDate Started: June 2, 2018

I’m encouraged to play this because Hungry Goriya has been streaming her first play-through of it for the past month or so.  Even though I started in June, she’s probably past me right now lol.  It’s always a fun time with good chat, so I’d highly recommend  you follow her!

I’m currently leveling because I want all my characters to know all the available magic.  That’s generally how I play FFVI.  I teach everyone everything.  It means every character has access to every spell as well as their individual skill, and it makes characters that many deem less useful (i.e. Gau) less of a hindrance.  Finding the right place to level has been a challenge though.  I discovered Triangle Island and the illusive Intangir, which only appears in a tiny, four-square forest.  You can defeat it easily if you have the Doom spell since it’s invisible and Vanish-Doom is a long known and exploitable bug, but it counterattacks with Meteo, which does around 900 damage.  If you have a character with a high enough max HP, you’re fine.  If you not, hope they have a high enough magic evade so it doesn’t hit.  The problem with this strategy is the Intangir only gives you AP points, but no EXP and no GP.  If you’re looking to learn magic quickly, it’s a fine plan, but I need money and I certainly need my characters to level before the Cave to the Sealed Gate.  There’s the desert outside Maranda, which is my usual spot, so I’ll be spending quite a bit of time there.

Title: Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius
Series: Final Fantasy
System: iPhone (8)

Final Fantasy: Brave ExviusDate Started: March 27, 2017

I made it to Mysidia with a new character Sakura, but I know I have a long way to go before I catch up with the story.  The latest, “big” summon is Squall and Rinoa, and I’ve been trying to draw the former.  I love how they put “Love Grows” in the background.  Sometimes I’ll just sit on that screen and listen to it as I’m cursing the fact that they make it so damn difficult to draw the featured units.  I’ve apparently reached the limit to how many friends I can have, so I currently have 22 notifications for adds I either have to sit on or delete.  I feel bad doing the latter, so I’m hoping I can soon increase the capacity.

What I Demoed

  • Happy Birthdays – It wasn’t my thing.  I’m not averse to SIM/world-building games, but this one didn’t catch me.

What I Watched

Title: The Illusion of Gaia
Series Title: Soul Blazer
Let’s Player: Hungry Goriya

There should be a remake of this game where you can play as Freedan the entire time.  Hell, Freedan should be the main character.  Give him some kind of awesome back story.  Will can be the illusion; Freedan can be the truth #FreedanForever

Title: Alan Wake
Series: Alan Wake
Let’s Player: ChristopherOdd

Some games become more transparent the longer you play/watch them, but this is still in the realm of WTF is really going on.  I have some ideas, but the devs did a phenomenal job of keeping you guessing.

What I Bought

  • The Last Dream $2.99 @ Steam – I received an email yesterday saying this was on sale for super cheap.  I like that Steam sends you that for stuff on your wish list.

If I’d gone into work today I would’ve come home with Octopath Traveler, but it was a bad fatigue day so I worked from home.  Y’all are terrible with tempting me into buying things btw.  I just wanted you to know that :p

If you’re currently playing OT who is your favorite character so far?  Please no spoilers though!

  2. This is giving me nightmares of drawing magic 😅 I thought I loved it at first, but by disc 2 I was hating myself every time I weakened a character by casting magic that was junctioned to someone. That Aura magic though… mmmmmmmmm 😍

    • Aura was the BEST spell. You could junction it to stuff, too, and it would give you mad stats. I think I had a way to make more because you could make it from a fairly common card. I would give people high magic stats and just spend time drawing the magic lol. If that stat was high enough you could get like 9 at a time 😀
