Title: Octopath Traveler
System: Nintendo Switch

Octopath Traveler coverDate Started: August 11, 2018

I’ve managed to snag the Starseer and Sorcerer jobs, and I’m preparing to go after the Warbringer by grinding in the Forest of Purgation.  I debated challenging the dire wolf there again, but the walkthrough I have for that suggests using Warbringer skills so I’m at least going to wait until I defeat Winnehild, which was the first I attempted to my rue.  I think I’m better prepared now, but I haven’t had a chance to hop on the sticks in about a week.  I’m hoping to give it a try tonight.

The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and VirtueMedia: eBook/Kindle

This book was not remotely what I expected, and that’s a wonderful thing.  It was spectacular.  Even though it took place in the 1700’s, there was nothing occurring that’s not relevant today.  Racism, sexism, homophobia, ablelism, etc. were perfectly represented along with how people can have both privilege and oppression as well as the intersection of it to navigate, as is the case with Percy as the half-black son of an English gentleman and a woman from Barbados.  While he has wealth and the privileges that go along with that, he has more than one obstacle to navigate.  Monty showcases how you can completely not understand someone’s point of view if you insist on only viewing it through your own lens, and it was often Felicity who completely got where Percy was coming from even as she herself had some seriously problematic views about homosexuality.  None of the characters were perfect and that’s exactly what made them so.

Later Levels QOTM: October 2018

I’ve been following Later Levels for quite some time now, but I’ve never participated in their Question of the Month challenge usually because I couldn’t think of a good answer.  That changed with this month’s spooky query to go along with the Halloween season!

The question set for us by Megan is: In honour of Halloween, tell me what video game scared you the most. What is it about the elements, environments, music, or characters in the video game that scared you?

Without a doubt SOMA.

SOMA coverThis game messed me up for months after, and I didn’t even play it myself; I watched an LP.  While it has the customary jump scares of most first person survivals, that’s not were the horror lies.  It’s far more existential in nature, and it’s not until you reach the end that the full impact of it hits you like a truck.

It’s set 100 years in the future at the bottom of the ocean in a derelict, undersea research facility.  The world has suffered a catastrophic event where everyone on the surface is presumed to be dead, but in some cases death is far better than the alternative.  The atmosphere of the game does wonders for projected an unnerving and unsettling air as you guide the protagonist Simon through a facility as strange to him as it is to you.

That right there is where I believe the linchpin lies.  Simon is just a regular person just like anyone playing the game, and what happened to him could happen to any of us.  He’s not a space marine, super soldier, scientist, or warrior.  He’s just a regular guy from Toronto with horrible luck.  He didn’t ask to be in that situation, and though it’s utterly outlandish, it’s still not out of the realm of possibility given where technology might go.

Where the story ends is literally gutting and you sit there for minutes after the credits roll and the after credit scene has played as the horrifying realization washes over you.  You remember you were explicitly warned about it around the midpoint of the game just like Simon was, and a terrible decision you need to make as him suddenly takes on a deeper meaning.  Yet it’s not until the end that you understand the implications.  It’s an experience I’m never going to forget and that I’m still working on reviewing.

So that’s my scariest game!  Check out Later Level’s post linked above if you want to get in on the spooky action 🙂

If all goes well, I might be able to post Chapter 12 before I go on my November NaNoWriMo hiatus.  I’ve added everything I needed to the chapter and am currently doing the second edit, looking for any proofreading or flow issues.  So far things look pretty good.  I’ll probably do a third edit since I did make some changes, and I like to go over those with fresh eyes.

Krim Du Shaw by Talia Haven

Title: Krim Du Shaw

Genre: Fantasy, Short Story

Krim Du Shaw coverPages: 6
Publication Date: January 4, 2016
Publisher: Sheehan and Haven
Media: eBook/Kindle

Krim was just a colt when the stallions of the Du Shaw herd led him and the mares to the stone building with its tall walls and heavy wooden door. The mares knew what the stallions yearned for, and they knew what would happen if the stallions gave in. But for Krim, it would be much later before he would discover for himself what lies beyond the stone wall.

One of the most original stories about unicorns I’ve ever read.  Quick and heartbreaking with no light or fluff to be found.  It was short, sweet, and brutal.  I liked how the value of the horn was never explicitly stated, and I liked how only the stallions yearned for a virgin’s touch (the mares knew better).  For six pages and $0.99, it has an impact you feel upon retrospect, and I’m surprised that some Goodreads users have it listed under “Children’s.”

4 stars.

You are anyone who has ever existed, and that makes you exactly like everyone who has ever existed. -Petrichor

It’s either bitter irony or cruel coincidence that I’m reviewing what could be considered the “pro-choice” volume of Saga.  Alana and (now) Earl Robot arrive in a place that’s literally called Abortion Town in order to get her a termination at eight months.  I should try not to be preachy, but fuck it tbh; it’s not like people listen to women anyway.  Chances are, anyone seeking a termination at eight months isn’t doing so because they suddenly decided against it.  It occurs in the wake of tragedy, and Alana’s plight mirrors so many.

Title: The Book of the Unnamed Midwife
Series Title: Road to Nowhere
Author: Meg Elison
Date Added: September 22, 2018
Date Started: September 28, 2018
Date DNF: October 3, 2018

The Book of the Unnamed MidwifeI did not DNF this book because it’s poorly written.  I DNFed it because it is too fucking real and I couldn’t handle it.  Meg Elison (whom I didn’t realize I followed on Twitter until I started reading this) has written the most realistic depiction of the world after an apocalyptic pandemic where 98% of the population dies and the ration of men to women is 10:1.  It’s fucking nightmarish if you’re a woman, and yet nothing in either history or current events makes it ring untrue.  It is exactly what would happen and the main character, our unnamed midwife, does everything she can to avoid the horrific fate of other uterus bearers by pretending to be a man, stocking up on weapons, and hiding.  She carries thousands of birth control shots with her to administer to those who can’t escape assault, and it was after a recounting of a horrific childbirth that I knew I had to call it quits.  It was too triggering for me.  So if you’re set off or bothered by that, rape/sexual assault, genital mutilation, suicide, disease, and just general grimdark, this is not the book for you.  It’s an important book that needs to be in the zeitgeist, but no one should potentially harm themselves by reading something potentially damaging.

Too goddamn easy

I apologize for nothing.  It’s fall.  It’s almost October.  They’re selling candy corn and mellowcreme pumpkins.  That pretty much means it’s spooky time.

Dancing skeletonsThe sad part is this post isn’t even about Halloween.  It’s about listing things in threes and I yoinked it from Cupcakes and Machetes.  So let’s get into it without any further distractions.

3 READ ONCE & LOVED AUTHORS:

Grace DravenGrace Draven is the author of the Wraith Kings series, which is this fantastic paranormal romance.  It was my top series last year, and I can’t wait for the third book to come out.  I actually just got an email from Goodreads and Amazon about her newest release Phoenix Unbound that I downloaded a sample of.  As my newest favorite author, I can’t wait to see what else she puts out.

Pink rose covered in dewSome minor setbacks these past two weeks (I was tired), but I came to a decision about a particular conversation.  I wasn’t sure about it, but it led into some important territory and lines I liked so I decided to keep it.  It’s been a struggle to edit, because the specific topic is very close to current events let alone the entire story, but I’m going to keep trying.  This is also probably the most controversial chapter in the story, but IDGAF.
