The State of the Gamer: 10/2/18

A weekly post updated every other Tuesday detailing my current gaming projects.  I have an account at Grouvee, which is a site you can use to keep track of your backlog, so please feel free to friend me there!

What I Played

Title: Octopath Traveler
System: Nintendo Switch

Octopath Traveler coverDate Started: August 11, 2018

So I had no clue the credits would roll after you completed your main characters story.  It was…weird and unexpected, and I actually tried to skip them because it seemed out of place.  Had I known that, I would’ve left Olberic for last, but since he was my main dude, he was more than leveled for that final part.  Since then I’ve finished Alfyn, Therion, Cyrus, and Ophilia’s stories.  Ophilia’s got me btw…as in I was openly weeping.  No spoilers, but I understood what one particular character was going through and why they were acting that way.  Cyrus’s ending actually creeped me out.  That mural he found was kind of terrifying with that monster on it.  Not to mention what it translated into.   The two “final” bosses who gave me trouble were Therion’s and Olberic’s.  I had to go back and replace H’aanit with Olberic and really strategize former one.  For Olberic’s last showdown, I used a lot of pomegranates.

I picked up on a common theme in all of the endings (save for Alfyn’s who is literally too good for this world, too pure.   He’s like the Captain America of Octopath Traveler).  Also, maybe I’ve been playing Final Fantasy or watching movies/TV shows or reading and writing for too long, but it is so obvious when an NPC is going to betray one of your characters.  I’m curious if anyone else picked up on this.  You’re free to talk to me about any of the characters I mentioned I finished up.

I tried the Warbringer Shrine and got my ass handed to me on all three attempts.  The internet tells me I should wait until all of my characters are at least on level 50 before I go for the special jobs.  I’m almost there.  Olberic and Therion are around level 60, and Cyrus in on level 47.  I need to figure out the best one to try first, because apparently I should have another one before trying the Warbringer again.

My favorite party so far is Olberic, Therion, Ophilia, and Cyrus.  I think it’s the most well rounded team, though I can throw Tressa in there as a replacement for Ophilia without much problem.  Olberic is your tank; Ophilia and Cyrus are you white mage and black mage respectively; and Therion has his enemy debuffs, which are so useful especially in conjunction with Olberic’s Brand’s Thunder.  Have your Dancer do the Lion Dance and Therion do Armor Corrosive with, I’m taking over close to 30k HP with that one skill that allows Olberic to do more than 9999 damage.

What do the rest of you peeps think?  Also do you spread out your jobs so that you have one of each or do you double up?  Right now I do the former so I’ll have four characters with four separate jobs so I have all the abilities, but I’ve been considering maybe having a second warrior or something like that.  I like hearing other opinions and techniques so I can give them a try!

Also, is the entire map ever going to be filled out?  I still have empty spaces in the corners, but I can’t see any way to get there per se.

What I Watched

Title: Syberia 3
Let’s Player: CJUGames

I’m so annoyed at how disappointing this game was.  The ending was a complete mess and only done for sequel bait.  I suppose you could say similar for Syberia 1, but that ending made sense within the scope of the story.  This was one just overly dramatic.  The game also suffered from numerous glitches and dialogue issues.  It’s a damn shame because the first two were amazing and magical.  This installment doesn’t do them any justice.

Title: Five Nights at Freddy’s
Let’s Player: CJUGames

I have fallen down the rabbit hole (or bear hole?) of FNAF.  I only watched the first game, but I’m currently watching every theory video I can get my hands on…during the day that is.  This shit is pretty horrifying, and the lore is just amazing.  I put the book The Silver Eyes on my TBR list so I can read it on my Kindle during the day.  I never said I wasn’t a wuss puss 🙂

DNF

Title: Tomb Raider
Let’s Player: ChristopherOdd

I was super into it when it first started, but then my excitement just waned.  I wish it didn’t because it seems like a really interesting game, but the heart wants what it wants.

What I’m Watching

Currently nothing, but I’m going to start watching Silent Hill because it’s October, and you know what that means.

Spooky time bitches!

Cheap Boss Attack recommended Stories Untold, Clock Tower, Hunting Ground, Fatal Frame, Outlast (which I’ve heard is terrifying so I’m on the fence about it), and some others.  Some of them are played by Markiplier whom I’ve heard of (of course, I live in the world) but have never watched.  I have heard of his apparently golden voice though hehe.  In return I clued CBA onto CJUGames who has a Silent Hill Let’s Play and a whole slew of other horror titles.  He’s an English guy with a great voice, and he kind of looks like Seth Rogen.  This isn’t a insult (I’m a fan of chubby guys and cats); just an observation. Leave your scary game recommendations in the comments!

I’m hoping to finish Octopath in the next two weeks or finish enough of it that I can move onto something else and just do cleanup with OT.  I still have FFVI to finish, and I’d like to do so before the end of the year.  I’m excited that Bendy and the Ink Machine is releasing its final (?) chapter this month.  I can’t wait to see the end of that!

What are your Halloween gaming plans?  Or if not gaming, do you have any plans to watch any scary movies or read any scary books?  I need to rewatch The Nightmare Before Christmas.  I literally do not remember that movie at all.  I have started watching The Dragon Prince on Netflix, and my peeps…it’s fucking stupendous.  We’re talking next level amazing.  I’ve only seen the first three episodes, because I’m trying to space it out.  Also when the hell is Castlevania coming back???  Oh October 26…well okay then.  I’ll continue to hold off the apocalypse for another month.  Maybe I’ll give you all Christmas, but I’m not promising New Year’s.

  2. Woo, spooky time is the best time! 😀 I love October/Halloween so much. ❤
Aw, you should totally watch TNBC again. 🙂 It's such a good movie. I watch it (at least) once a year. It still holds up really well and the music is fantastic. Have an amazing October!!

  3. I *love* the Dragon Prince!! There better be a season 2 soon. Have you seen Avatar: the Last Airbender (animated series)? A lot of the same folks worked on both shows and Avatar is so amazing, like probably my favorite show of all time if I’m honest . . . I need to stop gushing but yeah, if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend.

    • Ahhh it’s so good! I HAVE seen Avatar: The Last Airbender, and I got that vibe as soon as I started watching it. I need to finish Avatar. I’ve only seen up to Book 3 I think. I just finished episode 3 of The Dragon Prince. I’m trying to watch it slowly since there are only nine episodes. It’s been pretty big on Twitter and seems to be getting a good reception so I’m hoping they’ll continue it, too!

  4. I really need to get back to Octopath but things just keep getting in the way.

For October, I’ve decided to finally crack in to The Evil Within. So far I’m two chapters in and it is a weird one for sure.

  5. Ophilia is the character I picked for the demo. Now I am curious to see how her finale plays out. Will have to try the full game some day. Right now however Valkyria Chronicles 4 has a stranglehold on my gaming time.

  6. Oh man… I’m still trying to find Octopath Traveler used since games with taxes here are almost $100. I need a sale! Despite the troubles you described, it at least sounds like you’ve had a good time with the game. Games that make you cry are good ones, right? FFVI moved me like that a lot. I think I need to get Octopath sooner than later and experience it myself.

I am mostly staying away from scary games so far this October. I busted out some Castlevania for NES the other night and got destroyed by the reaper. How… convenient.

Anyway, I hope you have some luck finding some spooky LPs to watch!

    • That’s freaking obscene! I’d think you should be able to find a used copy somewhere. It’s definitely worth a play even with some of the foibles. It’s not perfect, but those don’t take anything significant away from the experience. I think FFVI has one of the best endings of all of them! It was the first Final Fantasy I played and finished, and it’s just such a hopeful ending.

I’m watching Silent Hill lol. It’s not so much scary as creepy, but I don’t know how I’ll feel when I find out what’s really going on.

Castlevania is a perfect Halloween time game! It’s a series I’ve never really played, though I would like to watch a Symphony of the Night LP since I love Alucard ♥
