The State of the Writer: 2/24/19

<–The State of the Writer: 2/10/18         The State of the Writer: 3/10/19–>

A post updated every other Sunday discussing my current writing projects and any completed the prior two weeks.

Finished Projects: 1

Project: Story
Title:
The Broken Rose
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Type: Fanfiction (FFVII) Novel
Current Word Count: 255,002
Prior Word Count: 255,229
Word Difference: -227
Status: Editing
Progress: Chapters 14 & 15 Second Edit

Pink diamond ring with smaller pink stones at cardinal points and diamond like stones aroundI went ahead and split the chapter.  That’s why the Progress description is so wonky.  I was able to think up a name for Chapter 15, too.  The original title is staying with 14.  The overarching idea of Chapter 14’s title is in both chapters, but I feel like there are too many ideas/events for it to just stay under one chapter umbrella.  I’m editing them as one chapter though, because I’m still going to post them at the same time, as I promised.

Project: Story Audio Recording
Title:
Northern Lights
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Type: Fanfiction (FFVII) Novel
Status: Recording
Progress: Recording Chapter 1

A nope!  Still haven’t re-recorded this yet.  I was sick last week so I’ve been using my medicine, which means my voice has been crap.  I also had a bridal shower to co-host on Saturday, so today my entire body hurts.  I don’t think I have anything to do this weekend, so I’m shooting for Friday to do my recording.

On Hold

Project: Story
Working Title:
The High Archon
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Type: Original Novel
Status: Drafting
Progress: On Hold

I made the decision to shelve this (again) last week.  Every time I’d see it on my to-do list, I’d just get this sinking feeling in my stomach.  I wanted to work on it, but right now there’s just too much going on and my concentration is shot.  This story takes place in a world that’s similar to ours but with an entirely different philosophy in how things are enacted, and that’s a hard balance.

I’m honestly no good at working on two big, similar projects at once, and editing and writing use a lot of the same type of brain processing and energy.  I’d rather throw all my power to getting The Broken Rose edited and out there then return to this so I can give it my all.  Working on the audio recording of Northern Lights isn’t the same because that’s just fancy reading, though I could do two editing jobs at once; however, writing is an act of creation, and that takes a lot out of you.  I mean even God had to rest after seven days in that one story lol.

Of course I’ll write down any notes/ideas I have in the interim, but I took working on it off my to-do list.  Honestly, once I did, this extreme sense of relief washed over me, because I knew I didn’t have the time or energy to work on it, and I’d rather have more of that limited resource to complete other stuff instead of spreading myself thin in more places and getting less work done everywhere.

Project: Video Book Review: Incognito by David Eagleman – Yep, I put this on hold, too.  I think it’s because I’m already doing an audio/video think with Northern Lights, and I don’t like to work on two similar things at the same time or something.  I attempted to work on this last week and I had neither the energy nor the wherewithal to continue with it.  I already have the video recorded, but it needs to be edited, which I also need to learn how to do while I’m doing it.  It seems like something that would be better to work on when I have more time.  It’s also not like I don’t have shit ton of book reviews to post anyway.

In Progress

  • Game Review: Oxenfree – I’m making progress on this, though it’s mostly just moving stuff from my notes into WordPress.  There’s a lot of rearranging and editing that’s going to be needed once I’m done.
  • Book Review: The Habitation of the Blessed by Catherynne M. Valente – Whew…this one is going to take some research before I can even start the review.  It delves into a lot of apocrypha that I’ve either never heard of or only heard in passing.

I’m hoping to have more items in my Finished pile by next update.  I think I’ve been working on Oxenfree for two months.  Game reviews tend to take more time than book reviews since I, generally, only review games that require a lot of analysis.  I am really happy I decided to shelve my WIP and video book review for now. I feel so much less stressed.

Is there anything you’ve shelved or foregone that lifted a huge weight off of your shoulders?  I feel like there’s a weight for completion and a counterweight to putting it down that’s rarely discussed.

        • Gah stoooop lol *blushes*

If you have a smartphone I’d recommend OneNote. It’s literally my second brain. If I didn’t use it to store my ideas, I’d never remember anything and/or they’d just bounce around my brain and drive me up the wall.

            • Yeah you should! Not only can you use it on your phone, but it syncs up with the program on your computer. I love it because no matter what I use it on it’ll all be in the same place. I don’t know if Scrivener does that, though I’m pretty sure there’s an app for that.

  3. I’m going to feel spoiled when the TBR chapters are released! I’m sorry you’ve been sick though . . . and I don’t blame you for setting the High Archon aside for now; sometimes it’s nice to be able to focus on one thing at a time (am still really curious and excited about it, but given you’ve still got so many projects in the works right now, I can be patient!).

As for my workload, meh. I feel like all the winter storms lately, along with this being my last semester, are affecting my focus in a bad way. Still doing okay with my assignments, but I just wrote a brief that I think is terrible and I have to give an argument in class about it Thursday, so . . . yay. x.x

    • It’s this ridiculous winter! And my fibro fog ugh. Today I didn’t get up until 5:30 and I felt really bad because I was supposed to help my sis-in-law with baby shower party favors. Thankfully my husband went over so it got done, but it’s so irritating. I want to start taking walks in the spring when it gets nicer out.

I feel so much less stressed putting it on the shelf for a while! It gives me time to concentrate on the projects in progress, and I’m just better when I focus on one thing at a time.

One more semester though! It’s going to be such a relief when you get to the end. Any ideas what you want to do after? I’d think most places would help you with that next step.

      • It will definitely be a relief to be done! I am going to study/take the bar this summer and then clerk for a state judge for a year, which I think will give me a broad perspective on a lot of issues.
