The State of the Gamer: 3/12/19

<–The State of the Gamer: 2/26/19           The State of the Gamer: 3/26/19–>

A weekly post updated every other Tuesday detailing my current gaming projects.  I have an account at Grouvee, which is a site you can use to keep track of your backlog, so please feel free to friend me there!

What I Finished

Title: The First Tree
System: Nintendo Switch

The First Tree coverDate Started: 3/7/19
Date Finished: 3/10/19

I don’t think anyone could deny that this is a beautiful game with a magnificent soundtrack, excellent voice acting  (provided by the creator and his spouse), and stunning visuals.  It speaks to the creator, David Wehle’s cinematic background, which may also be the reason the game suffers from some significant logistical issues, namely the jumping mechanic.  Wehle isn’t (or wasn’t) a game designer.  It’s necessary for certain progression and to gather all the collectibles for you completionists out there.  The story, while nothing new, is still heartfelt and relatable, being about loss, regret, and memory.  How the visual representation of the fox searching for her cubs intertwines with the narrator coming to terms with his grief is up for discussion and interpretation.

I plan to fully review it, but I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys atmospheric and immersive.  If you liked Dear Esther, you’ll probably enjoy this.

What I’m Playing

Title: Night in the Woods
System: Nintendo Switch

Night in the Woods coverDate Started: 3/9/19

How.  The.  FUCK.  Did any of you allow me to go a moment without playing this game???  I’m struggling to find words for how fucking amazing it is, but it’s up there with BoJack Horseman for the realest shit I’ve seen using anthropomorphic animals, though I find it interesting how that fact is mentioned nowhere in the description nor in the game itself.  Whoever did the writing for this is absolutely brilliant, and I’m 100% Bea.  Unwillingly thrust into adulthood through the death of a parent with responsibilities she didn’t ask for, but no authority to go along with them.  A sullen, Gothic mien is one of ways you can cope, and Mae just does not get it.  Playing as her (Mae) is interesting because you see so many places where she fucks up, but you’re forced into her (bad) choices.

What else I love is how the weird shit is mixed in with the mundane.  Every day Mae wakes up and you lead her through sort of a daily routine with oddities interspersed.  I have so much written already about this for my eventual review, and I find the game hard to put down in order to go to bed.  I may wind up playing through it again as the game closes off some choices (at least on a daily basis), and I want to see what else might happen if I decide to do things another way.

Title: Final Fantasy VI
Series Title: Final Fantasy
System: PlayStation 3 (Port)

Final Fantasy VI coverDate Started: 6/2/18

Yassss bitch, that’s right!  I’m back to playing FFVI. I decided the team I’m going to take to The Cave to the Sealed Gate (that…is such a clunky name for it…): Terra (obviously) Edgar, Sabin, and Cyan, and that’s who I’m leveling right now.  Terra is already finished, so I replaced her with another character while I work on the last three.  I’m currently on Triangle Island, which is in the northeast (I think), looking for the Intangir.  They don’t give you any experience, but  you earn 10 points towards your Esper spells for each one you defeat.  They’re already invisible, so it’s easy to spam the “Vanish/Doom” bug, since the first step is already complete lol.  They do cast Meteo on whomever kills them as their last gasp, so if you’re going to use this leveling trick, make sure the character has over 1000 HP.

What I Played

  • Piczle Colors – Every day.  I find it relaxing to put on something like Family Guy (where I don’t have to pay attention, concentrate, or think too much) and do some of the random puzzles.

What I Demoed

  • Croc’s World Run – This was okay.  It’s in the vein of Mario Run (I’m assuming since I’ve never played that), but I very early on ran into tricky situations where you have to time your jumps perfectly or you’ll hit enemies or obstacles.  I don’t think I’ll be picking this up.
  • Drowning – This was more immersive than I thought, though it’s a little slow and monotonous as you’re just walking a scenic path through a forest while reading the text (it has a The First Tree mien to it, now that I’ve finished that but I think it’s even shorter).  The MC personifies his depression at first as someone he meets who won’t ‘talk to him, but that’s a constant presence and then later it tells him “odd” and troubling things.  I got more into it than I thought, and I think I’m going to pick it up since it’s only $2.99.

What I Watched

  • Dilandau3000
    • King’s Quest: Quest for the Crown
    • Kings Quest II: Romancing the Throne
    • King’s Quest III: To Heir Is Human
    • King’s Quest IV: The Perils of Rosella
    • King’s Quest V: Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder
    • King’s Quest VI: Heir Today, Gone Tomorrow
  • PushingUpRoses
    • King’s Quest VII: The Princeless Bride (DNF)

Way too many to put a separate link for all of them.  I was okay with this Let’s Player initially, but then he really started to irk me.  He takes forever to do things and will often just stand around explaining, which I get, but he’ll also show every single possible death, and that gets grating after a while especially since death sequences only differ in what bad pun the narrator might say.  You all know I both love and appreciate bad puns, but sometimes the LPer would through in his increasingly unfunny jokes, and I just wanted to see the game.

His version of KQV was different from the one Hungrygoriya played.  It was a more recently released one.  Maybe if we all bug her enough, she’ll play-throughs for all the King’s Quests 😀

I attempted to find another Let’s Player for KQVII, but the one I did I wound up DNFing.  She talks through cut scenes, which to me is a huge no-no for LPing.  Plus it seemed more like she wanted to talk about how bad the game was as opposed to playing it.  I stopped watching yet another play-through of it before her for that very reason.  I know there’s an audience for that type of thing, but I’m not that kind of audience.

What I’m Watching

Title: King’s Quest VII: The Princeless Bride
Series Title: King’s Quest
Let’s Player: Dilandau3000

Date Started: 3/12/19

I’m going to try to get through it.  It’s 40 videos D:

Title: Twilight Princess
Series Title: The Legend of Zelda
Let’s Player: Olizandri

Date Started: February 15, 2019

I’ve kind of neglected this since I went on my King’s Quest kick (there’s an eighth one, too), but I always come back to good ole Oliz.  He’s one of my favorite Let’s Players.

I love you all, but I need to proofread this, eat dinner, maybe read a bit then get back to playing Night in the Woods.  love when a game does this to me.  Is there a game that you just had to play for as many hours as you could once you started?  Sound off in the comments, and I hope you all have a great week!

  2. I’m going to delve into Night in the Woods at some point. I really like what the Switch has done for the indie scene. They’re like the video game equivalent of A24 (well, A24 if they had actual respect for their audience).

      • Oh, A24 is a company that has distributed a lot of critically acclaimed indie films such as The Witch, Moonlight, and Room. They’ve had a lot of success, but they also have a terrible habit of misrepresenting their films in trailers. They also infamously catfished single men with a bot on Tinder to promote one of their films. While these tactics have proven effective in getting people talking their films, it ultimately denotes a highly cynical attitude that doesn’t take the non-cinephile audience seriously, and I can’t imagine the strategy working out well for them in the long run.

    • I think you would freaking love Night in the Woods. Mae is such a sarcastic little kitten, but there are times when I wanted to strangle her, and you’re forced to say some really awful stuff as her. It’s so cringe-worthy, but one reviewer was saying how it’s shows how good the game is that IF made a game that good with a potentially unlikable protagonist.

  3. -SQUEAL!!!!- You playing Night the Woods?! 😀 “I GOT NIGHTMARE EYES.” I honestly freakin’ loved NITW. I was actually considering cosplaying Mae. I don’t wanna kill anything so i’ll wait for you to play it and give us an update but I could discuss this damn game for days and why its so damned ingenius. And you always surprise me with everything you are doing! I haven’t touched a game in months and it makes me sad ;o; I miss the days of waking up and turning on some Last of US MP haha

You should try recording your gameplay. I’d def be down to watch. Or do a livestream!!! Ohhh livestreeeeeam!!! :D!!!!!

    • You should cosplay Mae!! Omfg, I just finished it last night and I want to play it again. Mental health, socioeconomic issues/politics, cosmic FUCKING horror. It’s all so relevant. It reminded me a bit of BoJack Horseman in terms of anthropomorphic animals being the vehicle for the realest shit I’d ever seen. I need to write all the reviews about it., and I found this video that talks about demons and aliens and how it has a lot of Lovecraft influence. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jmzjjoWyPc&list=WL&index=186

I’m always doing so much shit lol. I want to stream! I need to figure out how to set it up though. I have a capture card. I just need to get off my ass and do it lol. I am on Twitch, but I haven’t put anything up there lol.

      • Right, right, right?!?! Just soooo fuckin’ genius. I can’t believe how underrated that game is. Its storytelling is beautiful because the animation and animals make it seem so cute and trivial at first but its like, the most real thing ever. Game gave me fuckin feels.
Ohhhh definitely checking the video out.

If you do stream, reply Night in the Woods for us xD I would love to see you play it. CRIMES!~~~~
