The State of the Gamer: 4/23/19

A weekly post updated every other Tuesday detailing my current gaming projects.  I have an account at Grouvee, which is a site you can use to keep track of your backlog, so please feel free to friend me there!

What I Obtained

  • Pic-a-Pix Deluxe – $7.99 @ Nintendo eShop

What I DNFed

Title: Doki Doki Literature Club
System: PC

Doki Doki Literature Club coverDate Started: 3/17/19
Date DNF: 4/16/19

So…I “finished” the game insofar as a major event happened and the game “ends.”  Left there befuddled, I restarted, and NOPED right out of there quicker than a photon.  Oh HELL no.  What happens is one of my biggest fear triggers, and I do not fuck with that.  I wound up watching a breakdown by The Game Theorists, and I’m glad I chose to DNF because I wouldn’t be able to use my computer ever again, and how would I do these fascinating posts if I don’t have my lappy?  Let’s just say if you’re into horror/meta-horror narratives DDLC will not disappoint.

What I’m Playing

Title: Final Fantasy VI
Series Title: Final Fantasy
System: PlayStation 3 (Port)

Final Fantasy VI coverDate Started: 6/2/18

Lonely FFVI is the only narrative based game I’m playing right now, and I haven’t gotten to it in over a month. Now that the wedding I was in is over, I can hopefully log some game time, though now my next real life project is looking for a new place to live and moving.

What I Played

  • Pic-a-Pix Deluxe – This has become my replacement for Piczle Colors (which I recently reviewed).  It’s the same premise but more challenging since PC doesn’t have any empty spaces to contend with.  I’ve already downloaded additional content since I finished all of the colored puzzles.  They’re all under $5 a piece, so I should be entertained by this for a long time.

What I Demoed

  • Grand Prix Story – This is a racing management game.  You don’t control the races but rather try to tweak the factors in your favor.  I can see the appeal, but I don’t think it’s for me.
  • Yoshi’s Crafted World – Mr. Panda’s review made me reconsider this one, because while it was in my ken, it really wasn’t on my radar.  I’m glad I did because HELL YES.  This is cute AF.  It’s a platformer with a paper craft aesthetic.  You control Yoshi who has his old tongue and swallow ability (…that…sounded really dirty), which causes him to lay eggs he can throw.  There’s an “easy” mode for beginners and/or younger players, and it’s just an adorable game.  Of course it’s Nintendo so you’re looking at dropping $60 for it, but I think it’s worth it if it’s your thing.
  • Box Boy + Box Girl – I’m here for this cute, little, puzzle game involving a boxy protagonist who can produce more boxes in order to solve puzzles.  If you couldn’t tell, I love puzzle games :p

What I Watched

Title: Octopath Traveler
Let’s Player: Olizandri

Date Started: 3/27/19
Date Finished: 4/18/19

Oliz finished FINISHED the game with the defeat of Galdera, the dark god.  I definitely think it was worth it to watch an LP of this prior to reviewing it myself, because I picked up A LOT more than I did with my own solitary play through.  I intend to stream/LP this myself.  Watching Olizandri not only gave me some story insights, he also utilized battle strategies I never thought of and used moves I either ignored or brushed off e.g. Therion’s Steal SP ability.  I never knew that was such a powerful attack, nor was I using the Rune Lord job remotely to its full potential.  He also picked up the secondary jobs far earlier than I did in my play through.  I’m looking forward to streaming this, and I’d like to test out my equipment this weekend!

Title: Twilight Princess
Series Title: The Legend of Zelda
Let’s Player: Olizandri

Date Started: 2/15/19
Date Finished: 4/19/19

I will always and even love the end of this game when Midna’s true form is revealed.  She’s so beautiful.  16/10 would shamefully swoon over ♥

What I’m Watching

Title: The Wind Waker
Series Title: The Legend of Zelda
Let’s Player: Olizandri

Date Started: 4/18/19

My Zelda Let’s Play watch continues with Wind Waker!  I wasn’t interested in this game at first due to the seemingly “downgraded” graphics, but they really aren’t.  Nintendo just went with a stylistic approach that’s no different from Octopath’s “two and half D” aesthetic.  Once you get used to it (or over it), the game is just as good as any other Zelda title.  I love the King of Red Lions (and his back story), and of course the temples and dungeons are so much fun to watch Oliz explore.  The different designs of the redeads in this game has garnered some interesting theories.  Seriously, if you want to hear some dark shit about the Zelda universe, dive into the rabbit hole of redead theories on YouTube, as well as anything about Majora’s Mask or really just masks in general.  Both are bound to leave you trembling in the night.

Next on my itinerary is to test drive my streaming equipment, and of course I want to continue playing FFVI.  I may start scheduling it like I do my reading to make sure I get some time in, but I’d need to figure out when.  I’m so happy VII, IX, and the X’s are on the Switch, though I really wish they’d put VIII on there.  That game gets no love.

What other games are highly underrated and deserve more respect?

  2. Yoshi with that tongue and swallow action cracked me up 😂😂. I’ve been thinking of playing FF6 again, but I just got into 10 on the Switch and I’m really into it right now.

I also got Ace Attorney, Chasm, and a game called Tangledeep and I love all of them. I usually hate Roguelike games so I’m surprised that I like Tangledeep so much.

I really should finish Octopath with every character…

    • I have X on my wish list AND Ace Attorney, too. I’ve wanted to play those for years. I’m obsessed with Pic-a-Pix right now, but I’ll probably play something more narrative based after that. I need to test out my ability to stream sometime soon because I want to play Octopath while doing it.

      • I’ll watch you play some Octopath :). X is overpriced, but I really wanted a meaty JRPG to play on my Switch so I caved and bought it. I wish Square would make their FF games price friendly. I want FF12 too, but that’s another $60 I’ll have to drop on the game and I just don’t have that kind of cash right now.

        • I should test out my equipment today. I want to say it’s both X and X-2, but I could be wrong. I’ve never played X-2, so I’m interested. Squeenix knows they can charge whatever they hell they want and people will pay it. It’s irritating and extortion, but I know I’m going to buy it eventually :\

          • I’ve never played X2 either. I actually never finished 10 so I started that one first. I forgot how annoying Tidus sounds when he laughs. I’m really enjoying the game though. It’s different than other Final Fantasy games. You don’t level up. You gain skill points instead and that’s pretty cool. And you’re right. Square does know that they can charge whatever they want because people will buy it. I’m proof of that…

            • I was really derisive of it back when it came out because I hopped on the criticism bandwagon, but I honestly want to check it out myself. I. HATE. TIdus’s voice acting. His voice is so goddamn annoying lol. It’s up there with Aeris’s in Crisis Core, though hers was so bad I didn’t finish the game because of it. I hate how she sounded like a complete twit. I’m hoping they re-release CC at some point on the Switch with language options.

I am a Squeenix whore ROFL.

  3. Aww thank you so much for the shoutout! I’m so happy that my review of Yoshi’s Crafted World helped you! Yoshi has to be my all-time favorite Mario character. 😀 Also, awesome that you moved on to Pic-a-Pix Deluxe. I actually liked that one over Piczle Colors because the clues were handled better for me. I really want to get the FFs on Switch. One day soon, probably during my month off for moving and such, I’ll play through them and Ace Attorney on Switch. But until then, I’ll have to play Melodies of Life on repeat to quench my IX thirst. I’m not disappointed that FFVIII is missing on Switch. 😛 Nah, I do think that game should be there to complete the collection, but I feel like its absence may have something to do with the Eyes on Me vocal song and some possible copyright issue.

    • I saw that Ace Attorney is on Switch and I’m so stoked! I’ve wanted to play them or years and have purposely avoided any spoilers about them.

I completely didn’t think about Eyes on Me. They probably had to make some kind of deal to use that song in the game and the rights have expired. I’d think they’d need the same with Melodies of Life in FFIX, but maybe those weren’t as difficult to get? Or because IX is seen as more popular they did more to look into it. I really hope they work it out soon.

      • Yes!! Ace Attorney is so fantastic, and I would highly recommend it for the story, characters, and music. I want to pick it up on Switch, even though I already rebought it (for the 3rd time) on 3DS and still haven’t replayed that one (oops!)

I think there are no rights issues with any of the FF songs except possibly Eyes in Me. They play those other songs in concerts and remix soundtracks all the time. But Eyes on Me has never been played. At least not the vocal version. Only the bgm version, which is apparently ok. I don’t think IX is more popular, buuut I know you know that I love IX and am not a huge VIII fan, so I don’t mind too much that it was skipped. Only that the collection feels incomplete.

        • I think I’m going to pick it up with my birthday gift card!

That’s a good point. I’ve never heard Eyes on Me in any of the concerts. I think the singer is pretty famous, so it could be an issue. Ah! I always forget that it’s Brad/Cheap Boss Attack who loves VIII 😀 Your favorite is…IX! Right? I agree. It feels incomplete and I hope they work it out soon.

          • Yup! IX all the way! I was actually just listening to Melodies of Life in the car just now, song almost made me tear up. I’m not a big VIII fan, but funny enough, I’ve started to grow on Squall, Rinoa, Selphie, and the rest because of spin-off FF stuff like Dissidia FF Opera Omnia and the FF trading card game, both of which I’ve been playing a lot of. Also, Happy Birthday!

            • I have so much FF trading stuff on my Amazon wish list lol. There’s an app where you can play Triple Triad, but it’s not very good. I think there’s a site online where you can do it, too. I need to make sure I have at least one good card and don’t lose it.

              • Yeah I love the FFTCG. My wife and play it any chance we get, and we’ve built decks based on IX, VII, XV, VI, and some other mixes. I’m especially happy about the IX deck because my strategy revolves around using Vivi, my favorite! I’ve also been playing Triple Triad on the FF Portal App, mostly to get some of the other cards that you can only get with the points haha. Honestly, I don’t get some of the rules, like, suddenly, my opponent will steal all my cards after I’ve assumed I’ve won…

  4. Hmmmm…I personally believe that Mass Effect Andromeda is really underrated because everyone heard the bad press it initially got and didn’t hear that it got patched. I also really like the puzzle/platformer Hue, which is underrated in that I don’t think too many people have actually played it or heard of it.

    Liked by 2 people

    • I absolutely agree about Andromeda. That game was panned so badly and it was over some minor things that could be fixed with patches. I’m still very interested in playing it.

I’m looking up Hue right now. I love puzzle games and platform games. There’s a new one out Box Box + Box Girl that I just demoed. From the cover Hue reminds me of Limbo, at least with the aesthetic.

    • Yeaaaaaaah, once I heard the distortions in the music and the characters acting weird, I noped right on out of there. I had suspicions about a particular girl from the start so I wasn’t too shocked to see the break down on Game Theory.

Omg yes, it was an absolutely genius strategy on the developer’s part and I’m curious about the next game.
