The State of the Reader: 6/19/19

A biweekly post updated every other Wednesday detailing my current reading projects and what new titles I’ve added to my to-read list.  Title links go to Goodreads, and if you have an account there feel free to friend me!  I’d love to see what you’re reading and/or planning to read.

Even though a major aspect of this was predictable, I still really liked it.  I liked the concepts behind it, even the confusing wrench of Pat Connolly’s powers.  I may look at some reviews/interpretations of this before I write mine just to help my focus.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention this novel was written by one of my favorite bloggers The Well-Red Mage, but I will try not to let my fondness of him bias me towards this novella.  I like the way it’s written for how it is; it has a fairy tale, almost sing-song aspect to its prose.  I’ll reserve any critiques for when I finish.

Title: The Case of Charles Dexter Ward
Author: H. P. Lovecraft
Date Added: March 15, 2013
Date Started: May 9, 2019

The Case of Charles Dexter Ward coverMedia: eBook/Kindle

I wish this story would just get to the damn point.  Really the only reason I’m reading Lovecraft is for FFVII essay research purposes.  The things I do for my fandom…

Title: Tigana
Author: Guy Gavriel Kay
Date Added: February 9, 2016
Date Started: December 8, 2018

TiganaMedia: Paperback
Progress: 79%

I’m on the last chapter…where it all will come together.  No matter how this ends, whether in joy or woe, I know it will be beautifully sewn.

Title: The Hero With a Thousand Faces
Author: Joseph Campbell
Date Added: April 24, 2014
Date Started: December 3, 2018

The Hero With a Thousand FacesMedia: Hardback
Progress: 51%

I might be reading this, too, for research purposes, but at least I’m enjoying it.

I’m in a “I hate everything” mood, because health shit.  Someone breathed on me wrong, and I’ve been broken out for the past few weeks.  No clue whats going on with it.  It’s always a mystery I don’t have the energy to solve.  Apparently summer in PA means it rains.  ALL THE TIME.  I don’t think we’ve had a day without rain for months.  Ah, I should stop complaining.  This has nothing to do with books.  Well, it’s almost exactly the half point of the year.  Where are you with your challenge?  I believe I’m on track with 9 or my 20 books read.  How about you?

  2. It’s raining all the time in Michigan too, which is not our usual weather. But you know, climate change isn’t real. *grumbles*
My husband is still sick with no solid diagnosis so my reading has virtually come to a halt. Which, I feel bad about as I began an arc before it’s release date but then still haven’t finished it. I need to just pound it out so I can start another book I’ve been looking forward to. I have met my reading challenge of 25 books already, but I’m really glad I hacked it down instead of increasing it this year.

    • It feels like an extended April, like spring has gotten longer and hotter. I hate it.

Ugh, that s the worst 😦 I hope you two are holding up okay and you get some answers soon. I think we’re all so programmed to feel bad even when we’re in serious situations. You obviously have important shit on your mind. I hope you’re at least able to distract from the serious for a bit until you know what’s going on.

Cutting down my challenge was the best decision. I don’t feel as stressed out about missing days when I’m too tired or busy to read.

      • He goes to a specialist this week so we’re hoping to FINALLY get some kind of answers. BUT he is finally starting to feel better and feel more like himself. Once we get past all that, it will just be the stress of paying medical bills which I’ve promised myself, I’m just not going to get stressed about. They’ll get paid when they get paid.

Sounds like it was the best decision for both us to ease back on our reading challenges. 🙂

  3. We’re getting tons of rain here in Michigan, too! I’m so over it. Especially because my job involves us constantly having to get out in the community with our clients which is just that much harder and less pleasant when it’s a crappy day outside. I love the rain if I can stay inside and write but how often does that actually happen? lol
I am at 21 of the 25 books I’ve wanted to read this year so far, but to be fair, part of that number is graphic novels. 😛
Hopefully better days are coming your way! ❤

    • People were sent home from my job on Thursday (we can work from home) AND it was decided we’d work from home Friday, too. The parking lot is lower and it’s flooded before. It’s like we can’t have a day without rain. But at least my job is indoors and has those contingencies. If you have one that involves literally BEING OUTSIDE, it’s so much more of a mess.

You’re so close! I’m about halfway through, but I’ve been really leisurely this year.

  4. Rainy in Montana too! Though I admit we got a heat wave before the rain, which presented its own problems, ha. I keep either getting colds or I’ve become allergic to everything . . . though if it’s allergies, you’d think the rain would help knock the pollen down.

I hope you feel better soon though! Being sick tends to throw a wrench in everything. :/

    • It’s POURING here right now with a never ending rumble of thunder. We just got yet another flood warning. I think at least my asthma/lungs have settled down because the weather has just been steadily hot. I almost feel like rain just moistens the pollen, which makes it stick around longer D:
