The State of the Gamer: 8/27/19

<–The State of the Gamer: 8/13/19           The State of the Gamer: 9/10/19–>

A weekly post updated every other Tuesday detailing my current gaming projects.  I have an account at Grouvee, which is a site you can use to keep track of your backlog, so please feel free to friend me there!

What I Bought

  • Suberbeat: Xonic – $0.89 @ Nintendo eShop

What I Demoed

  • Cadence of Hyrule – Crypt of the Necrodancer featuring Legend of Zelda – I ultimately ended up passing on this game, but only because I suck at roguelike even if they are rhythm based lol.  I wound up watching an Olizandri play-through of it, though, and I was up late listening to the shopkeeper mix of the music.  I’ll talk more about that below and share the awesomeness.

What I’m Playing

Title: Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl
Series Title: Etrian Odyssey
System: Nintendo 3DS

Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium GirlDate Started: 6/30/19

I’ve been playing a great deal of this since I’ve been on vacation.  It’s…harder than other RPGs I’ve played (i.e Final Fantasy) but then it is a dungeon crawler that requires you to go back and forth.  It’s oddly relaxing though?  I love mapping and marking things there, especially since it usually comes in handy later for when you have to go back.  Really once things are mapped, it takes much less time, and I  also like how quests can take you back to previous areas.  I checked the howlongtobeat.com, and to finish the main game is about 45 hours with about 10 more tacked on for side quests.  Full completion is around 95 hours, but I’ll see how I feel about that.  I’m hoping this doesn’t have the 70 level cap on it like EOV.

Title: Final Fantasy VI
Series Title: Final Fantasy
System: PlayStation 3 (Port)

Final Fantasy VI coverDate Started: 6/2/18

I managed to finish up the cave in Thamasa, but I haven’t gone back due to the TV’s volume issues.  I need to get some duct tape so I can try to manually hold down the volume button, which should allow me control.  I really don’t want to take the TV apart right now since I’m also having laptop trouble.  All of my electronics are turning against me.  Skynet is coming…

What I Played

  • Pic-a-Pix Deluxe

What I Watched

Title: Breath of the Wild
Series Title: The Legend of Zelda
Let’s Player: Olizandri

Date Started: 6/2/19
Date Finished: 8/20/19

Far be it from me to tell anyone what they can and cannot enjoy, and I definitely understand how the lack of full length dungeons is a sticking point, but this was honestly one of the best games I’ve ever seen.  Now again, I did not play it myself, so I’m just an observer; however, in terms of narrative/storytelling, mien/atmosphere, and voice acting, this was a goddamn masterpiece.  I cannot wait for the sequel and in watching analyses about it by Zeltik, NintendoBlackCrisis, and Newbornkilik, I concluded that there are a lot of shared paradigms between it and FFVII (this may be why it’s in my top Zeldas now, do not @ me).  Of course I need to gather more info and organize my thoughts before I really talk about this, but expect an essay in the next few years lol (*sob,* I wish I had more time…)

I’m still watching Oliz play, but he’s doing the DLC tasks right now, so my end date is when I saw the end of the game.

Title: Cadence of Hyrule
Series: Legend of Zelda & Crypt of the Necrodancer
Let’s Player: Olizandri

Date Started: 8/25/19
Date Finished: 8/26/19

As mentioned above, I love rhythm games, but I was NOT good at this lol.  Neither was Oliz when he first started, but he persisted through the numerous deaths.  The soundtrack to this game is straight fire, and the best parts are when the shopkeeper sings.

It kind of reminds me of FFVI’s opera, but with a more refined sound!  Of course if FFVI were remade today (please gaming gods make it happen), they’d obviously use actual voices, and we can only hope they’d tap this lady, or the people from Distant Worlds.

Either way, if you like roguelike and rhythm games or are willing to give something like that a try (or if you’ve played Crypt of the Necrodancer, which I’d never heard of until Cadence), I’d check this out.  Also, props to the double entendre since the main character is literally named “Cadence.”

Despite cleaning them thoroughly, there’s a line of keys on my laptop that don’t work properly,  The “9,” “o,” “l,” and “.” are a fight to press.  Let me tell how fun it was trying to work on my Legend of Zelda fanfic dealing with that yesterday.  Also do you know how often I say “omg” and “lol???”  A friend suggested I try tightening the laptop screws as loosening can cause them not to register, and that helped a bit, but it’s still a struggle.  I’m currently using my husband’s USB, wireless keyboard, but that’s a pain because I have to move it to use the mouse.  I know the lungs are the planet are literally on fire, the earth is dying, and capitalism is killing it (thanks FFVII for being a prophecy and more than a video game #lolsob), and these are my small first world problems, but it still sucks.  This is the second laptop this has happened with, and I JUST bought it maybe two years ago?  It’s frustrating; I’m frustrated, and dammit, I’m allowed to be.

My test video game stream didn’t go so well last week either, and I was supposed to try again on my husband’s desktop today, but I didn’t get to sleep until nearly six in the morning, and I didn’t wake up until three this afternoon, so this day was kind of a wash.  I might try tomorrow if possible.  I could get the capture card to work, but my laptop massively slowed down, so I don’t know if it’s powerful enough to stream through, which is why I want to try the desktop. I also had issues with the sound so I need to figure that out.  You can’t hear me or the game, which is no good.

So many problems and not enough solutions :\
