Progress: Third edit of Chapter 21
I think this third edit might be my last. I’ve been getting more comments/kudos on AO3, probably because more stuff has come out about the Remake. I notice an uptick in interactions whenever that occurs, which is pretty cool. What I find interesting is I think Northern Lights is the more superior story, but this one gets more interaction. Maybe because it’s still ongoing. I hope with the audio of NL I’ll get more interactions with that, but I’ll discuss that below. Speaking of audio, this came out this week, and I can’t stop listening to it.
It’s on vinyl and I need to have it even though that means I have to buy a record player. The Squeenix store doesn’t even have it for preorder yet, but I get emails from them with any new stuff, so I just need to keep my eyes open.

Progress: First edit of Chapter 1
Holy shit, PROGRESS. So, I put together the opening titles on Windows Movie Maker, though even gaining access to that program is a story unto itself. Because I had to reinstall Windows on my computer, anything extra I downloaded was gone. So no WMM and no Davinci Resolve. I never really used the latter and am more familiar with the former so I went to snag that. After a few failed attempts, I finally found the one from 2016 or so. Windows no longer supports it, but I don’t care. I’m used to it and it’s what I want to use.
I don’t have any of the timings right yet, but I do have the images in. Now I need to decide if I’m going to go back to the audio and add the music/sound first before I continue on the images. I wish I had any talent with movie making, because that would make this SO much easier. It took me six months to make this:
I do feel better now that I’m making some progress though, and I’ve been working on it even when it’s not on my to do list. This first chapter is going to be a major learning experience for me, as I see what works best and how to go about doing the rest. I’m hoping subsequent chapters won’t take as long.
In Progress
- Yearly Review: Top 5 Games of 2019 – I just need to talk about the number one game before proofreading/editing. It was a fun year filled with amazing games. I’m a little surprised my number one wasn’t by a certain company, but I have to give credit where it’s due.
- Game Review: Final Fantasy VI – I haven’t really had the energy to work on this. Like I said last update, it’s a big narrative with lots of characters that’s going to take a while to summarize.
- Book Review: A Reaper at the Gates by Sabaa Tahir – I haven’t really gotten a chance to update this either, but at least my notes are in order.
I got nothing extra lol. I’m sleepy and have a ton of catching up to do. Story of my life 😉

As you know, I adooooore the northern lights!!! Read it at least 10 times. The broken rose progresses slowly so it took me a while to get into the story… but look at me, I’m addicted now. The way you describe Sephiroth in both stories is my favourite out of all fanfics in the world and I absolutely love his calm but sad character traits.
You are busy as hell but still doing the NL audio? Just wow!

Aw I really appreciate that! I think it’s because Northern Lights was posted on a consistent, weekly basis while I post chapters of The Broken Rose whenever the hell I finish editing them lol. I like having a set schedule, but it just doesn’t make sense to do what I did with TBR that I did with NL. For the audio recording, it’s such a “what the hell am I even doing?” type of project :p

I really need to re-read Northern Lights . . . it was such a good read and one that came along at a point in my life when I needed it. I don’t know that I could choose a favorite between it and TBR; what I find fascinating about them is that they kind of mirror each other in the way they begin (like Aeris begins as a prisoner in TBR and Seph begins as one in NL) but then go on to explore different trajectories for the characters.

It’s actually funny you say that because that’s how I think about them! I have sort of a split timeline headcanon for them, and it’s all depending on whether or not any part of the malignant consciousness/influence of Jenova remained. In Northern Lights it’s still there, and that’s why Sephiroth is drawn to Midgar, goes there, and is imprisoned where the Planet draws Aeris to him. The Broken Rose occurs if that doesn’t happen, but that means he winds up in The Whispers without ever going to Midgar and the city declines to the point that Aeris ends up in her terrible situation. Because Sephiroth never went to Midgar, he never is there to rescue Aeris from what almost happened to her in the very first chapter.
I have some other story ideas that follow one or the other timeline, but I had to work out in my head what caused the difference because I’m a big nerd :p

That is some deep lore, and I love it. The whole idea of alternate timelines fascinates me and it’s really cool that you’ve been able to write two expansive stories that parallel each other that way!

I just need the time hehe. There’s actually a bunch of branching I want to do. I really, REALLY want to explore this idea of Sephiroth and Cloud running into each other again with Seph as he is in this timeline, because I think there’s a lot that can be done with someone who can’t/won’t forgive no matter how much a person has changed (or isn’t that person anymore). That’s a pretty important point to make because no one should be forced to forgive anyone, and it’ll be doubly awkward with Aeris in the mix, and I cannot WAIT to torture these characters mwahahah!

Bringing Cloud into it sounds so deliciously evil . . . >:)

Oh I have plans lol. I’ve been getting little flashes of dialogue and taking notes. One of Seph’s main hangups is that he’s not a “real person,” and I’m going to play that thread to its very limit with this angle.
