The State of the Gamer: 12/31/20

<–The State of the Gamer: 12/17/20           The State of the Gamer: 1/14/21–>

A weekly post updated every other Thursday detailing my current gaming projects.  I have an account at Grouvee, which is a site you can use to keep track of your backlog, so please feel free to friend me there!

What I Purchased

  • Calico – $11.99 @ Nintendo eShop
  • What Remains of Edith Finch – $5.99 @ Nintendo eShop
  • Final Fantasy IX – $10.49 @ Nintendo eShop

One of my friends reminded me about Calico on Facebook, and I immediately went to check it out/buy it.  The graphics are…a bit rough, and the controls are a little weird, but who gives a fuck YOU GET TO PET ALL THE ANIMALS.

I’ve seen What Remains of Edith Finch (it’s actually how I found about about The King in Yellow from a book on the grandmother’s shelf), but it was hard to turn down a copy for such a low price.  Plus I do like to both play and watch a game before I review it, and I’ve seen both it and some of the analyses of the same.  With those in mind, I want to go through it again.  Plus, it’s just an excellent game.

Snagging FFIX for the Switch has always been a planned move, and it was half off for year end so I just went with it.

What I’m Playing

Title: Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight
Series: Etrian Odyssey
System: Nintendo 3DS

Still haven’t picked this up, but I might tonight.  I’ve been thinking about it, and I definitely still want to finish it.

Title: World of Final Fantasy Maxima
Series: Final Fantasy
System: Nintendo Switch

Cover of World of Final Fantasy MaximaDate Started: 8/30/20
Date Finished: 11/27/20

I played a little bit of this the other day.  Still grinding.  I might do the extra fourth dungeon next time I play, but I want to make sure I have some good XL Mirages since I think there’s a big boss at the end of it.

What I Played

  • Golf Peaks – Did two puzzles in one night.  I’m on a roll!
  • AVICII Invector – I think I played this once in the past two weeks, but I still love it.
  • Calico – I’m keeping this in this section since I think it’s one of those ongoing games not so much a “I finished it!” type of game.  It’s super cute if a little rough around the edges.  The controls are a bit wonky, and there’s SO MUCH CLIPPING lol, but it’s cute and fun so who really cares?

What I Demoed

  • Tangle Tower – Been a while since I’ve demoed anything.  I really liked this one, but I didn’t purchase it since I still have plenty of things to play.  It’s entirely voice acted and voice acted well.  The gameplay is easy to follow, and the case is intriguing.  I think if had been a little less than the $20 it is, I’d have picked it up, and I definitely will if it goes on sale.

What I Watched

  • Man of Medan (ChristopherOdd) – Okay…I understand why this one is lower rated than Until Dawn.  The ending is a bit…weird, and there are a lot of things that just don’t make sense about it.  I did like the plot though, and I didn’t see an issue with the voice acting that others did.
  • Until Dawn (ChristopherOdd) – Definitely better than Man of Medan.  Again, people apparently had issues with the voice acting, but…that’s how teenagers talk?  At least stereotypically.   I was planning on playing this myself, but there is no fucking way I could lol.  Way too much of a wuss puss.
  • Little Hope (ChristopherOdd) – Just finished this up the other day, and I’d rank it above Man of Medan, too.  Technically Until Dawn isn’t in the Dark Pictures Anthology; it’s just made by the same people.  Again, I’ve seen critiques about it, but I’m noticing a definitely pattern (if two instances can be called a pattern….) insofar as *spoiler* there’s nothing actually supernatural going on with the situations; there’s a real world explanation, and I love that subversion. *end spoilers*  I’m also a fan of the double entendre of the title.  Can’t wait until the next one comes out.  I’m pretty sure the Curator is Death, too.
  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky (Olizandri) – I really want to play this, too.  It’s on the PS Vita, but I have so many RPGs to play and so little time so I figured I’d watch it now.  Trails of Cold Steel III is available on the Switch, but I want to be caught up with the story before I start playing that.  I really like how you start the game by actually being a Bracer before you’re rushed off to the main storyline.  It gives a sense of the world and how it works, plus Oliz is always delightful to watch.  I still need to finish watching him play Xenogears.

So this is my last post of a year I’m happy to say good riddance to.  Granted, I don’t really go for the whole idea that a new year is going to bring new opportunities, because um, the past still exists?  Don’t get me wrong; I’m not trying to yuck anyone’s yum about using the New Years as a reason to work on themselves.  I think it’s a nice milestone to use, but I also don’t want people to feel beholden to do so and/or believe that just because we’ve gone around the sun again that what happened before doesn’t matter or have an effect.  The shit from 2020 isn’t just going to stop affecting things going forward, and we have so much to clean up not only from last year but from, well, centuries.

I hope you all have a safe and happy new year.  Stay the fuck home, drink if you drink, feast, watch shit you like, and let yourself enjoy things.  I’m gonna eat the $20 cake that was literally delivered to my door; drink wine, and eat the food DoorDash is bringing because that’s my idea of a good time.

Sláinte, bitches

  2. Happy New Year! I’m approaching 2021 cautiously optimistic, but I’m worried all these fools saying things like, “2021 has GOT to be better than 2020 right?!” are going to jinx everything and trigger the apocalypse. So eat that food! Enjoy yourself! Things could TOTALLY get worse lmao.
I’m really hoping they don’t though in all seriousness. :3

    • Same. I don’t get that attitude at ALL. Things can always be worse just like they can always be better. I don’t know if they lack imagination or they’re just foolishly optimistic. I’m hoping they don’t, and things seem better primed to now, but fingers crossed anyway.
