The State of the Gamer: 2/25/21

<–The State of the Gamer: 2/11/21           The State of the Gamer: 3/11/21–>

A weekly post updated every other Thursday detailing my current gaming projects.  I have an account at Grouvee, which is a site you can use to keep track of your backlog, so please feel free to friend me there!

What I Purchased

  • Fitness Boxing – $49.99 @ Nintendo eShop

What I Finished

Nothing this week.

What I’m Playing

Title: GRIS
System: Nintendo Switch

Cover of GRISDate Started: 2/4/21

I was hoping I’d be finished this by now, so I could at least say I did “one” in February (four LOLOL), but it’s been a few days since I picked it up.  I absolutely love it, but I wish there was a way to manually save.  I have to wait for it to do so on its own, and I don’t always notice when it does and am afraid to just turn off in case I lose like an hour of progress.

Title: Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight
Series: Etrian Odyssey
System: Nintendo 3DS

Cover of Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir KnightDate Started: 9/7/20

I don’t think I’ve picked this up in the past two weeks.  I still need to grind to buy the best weapons and hopefully level my characters up enough to take on the 4th Stratum boss.  I don’t just want to give up on it.  I really like these games, but they are challenging lol.

What I Played

  • Picross S4 – I’m almost done with the Mega Puzzles on this one

What I Demoed

  • Ephemeral Fantasy on Dark – It’s a visual novel otome game. You play as a zombie girl from a “sheltered” town. She has tons of questions about the world and even her race since most zombies commit suicide before they grow old and decay.   That’s what her parents did, so she lives with her grandmother who keeps her face wrapped. Most zombies don’t make it to that age, and the MC has to take a medicine to keep from spreading the infection.  Zombies are also one of the lowest ranked races where mermaids are the highest. I’m really curious about the lore of this game, but I’m not spending $40 on it lol.
  • Steam Prison – another visual novel, and I sure as fuck am not paying $65 for this one. I put it on my wish list on the chance it eventually goes on sale.
  • The Flower Collectors – This one I’ll pick up.  It’s like Rear Window and the characters are zoomorphic (more like Night in the Woods as opposed to Zootopia, Beastars or even BoJack Horseman i.e. they’re humans who just look like animals, at least that’s what it seems like so far).

What I Watched

  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC (Olizandri) – This game and its predecessor are really topical for one that came out more than a decade ago, but as we all know nothing changes and nothing ever will.  I think I’m about halfway through.
  • Final Fantasy Type-0 (Keith Ballard) – I watched the third video then decided I was done.  I hate let’s players who are not enthused about the games they’re doing especially when they have an air of derision.  Hopefully I can find someone else who does it; hopefully Olizandri does it at some point.  I can always just look up a plot breakdown of it at some point I suppose, but it’s so much better to either watch or play the game myself.
  • Super Mario 3D World (Olizandri) – Ahh, what a nice surprise to find this on my YouTube homepage earlier this week!  I saw this game in my Switch newsfeed, but I didn’t pay that much attention to it?  I don’t know what I thought it was, but it’s something I’d absolutely play.  YOU GET TO BE A CAT.  There’s also the Bowser game, which I know Oliz will do since the King of (not so) Evil is his favorite character lol.  This is something to look forward to on a daily basis.

Right before I posted this I was watching WandaVision and getting texts from my friend about the next FFVII updates.  They’re releasing a free upgrade of the Remake for the PS5 with an episode about Yuffie (the episode about Yuffie is..not free lol), now I need to murder to get that system since you can’t seem to find them anywhere still.  Either that or I need to put my people on this…or I would if I had people.  There’s also more information on The First Soldier, which is supposed to be a battle royale style game that takes place 30 years prior to the events of the OG, so my assumption is it’s going to have something to do with Deepground, and according to my friend Sephiroth is only 27 in the OG?  See, prior to this he didn’t have a canon age, or rather it was a mystery, but he was said to be in his 30s or something, but 27?  Do you know how stupid I was when I was 27???  Granted, you are psychologically an adult (25 is when the brain fully develops on average), but then there’s also CPTSD, which, um, yeah that bb definitely has.  Anyway, I’m sure there will be some precursor lore in that game, though since he is the first SOLDIER (right?  RIGHT??) I’m even more curious.  Then there’s Ever Crisis, which is a story driven game coming to Android and iOS in 2022.  According to the Verge article EC compiles the entire timeline of the compilation into a chapter structure with emphasis on the origins of SOLDIER, so that will be interesting.

So if anyone has any leads on where I can obtain a PS5 I’m all ears ;p

  2. I had a similar reaction to a few of Ballard’s other Let’s Plays. If they’re not enjoying it, I’m not enjoying it, unless they’re in a “so bad it’s good” mindset (like Super Best Friends Play).

I also hear you on visual novel pricing. Some of them are OUTRAGEOUS. I know translations take a lot of work, but I find the more expensive ones to be the ones where translations aren’t always the best (like Yumeutsutsu).

    • I’m glad I’m not the only one. Sometimes I feel like I’m too picky lol. If it’s a legitimately bad game than yes, I get that, but Type-0 doesn’t seem that terrible, but I get the feeling he didn’t like FFXIII and it’s in the same series as that. I wish I’d liked the battle system/gameplay more then I’d just play it myself.

Omfg right?? If that were the case wouldn’t manga be more expensive? Though I don’t know all the deets with games and programming.

  3. I really like that artwork for GRIS. 🙂
I haven’t been playing anything lately, though I’m starting to get that itch to play some sort of game, I just don’t know what. I did just surprise Mr. Moth with a copy of Little Hope from The Dark Pictures Anthology so I’m sure he’ll be playing that sometime soon so I’ll probably check that out while he’s playing.

    • It actually reminds me of yours! Now that you’re commenting I know why it looked familiar ♥

OMG you have to tell me what you think of Little Hope. I watched a Let’s Play of it and it was really good. Have you seen any of the other Dark Anthology games? I’ve seen them all currently. I’d say Man of Medan was probably the weakest, but I still enjoyed it 🙂

      • Aw, thank youuu! ❤
Yeah, Man of Medan was pretty cool. I know Mr. Moth liked it. He hasn't gotten too far into Little Hope yet because it's sooooo dark, like it's very difficult to see anything. We've messed with the settings several times and it doesn't seem to help any. I'm sure a lot of that is for the whole creepy vibe but it is more frustrating than anything so far unfortunately. I'm sure he'll start playing it again soon. I guess there's going to be like 8 installments of the Dark Pictures Anthology so it will be interesting to see the different themes. For now we've been playing Super Mario 3D World. 😀
