The State of the Writer: 4/18/21

<–The State of the Writer: 4/4/21         The State of the Writer: 5/2/21–>

A post updated every other Sunday discussing my current writing projects and any completed the prior two weeks.

Finished Projects: 1

Project: Story
Working Title:
The High Archon
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Type: Original
Length: Novel
Status: Preparation
Progress:
Setting up notes in Scrivener

Sometimes you take steps back in a process, which is why I removed “working on Chapter 1 outline” from the status.  I’ve been hashing out more notes and trying to refine the connections between this and my first novel.  I’m trying to decide if I want to make a Scrivener for that prior to starting work on this.  Obviously The Serpent’s Tale is already written, but it needs a complete overhaul.  Because it’s the foundation of this story, I have characters and settings from it in Scrivener under “Past Characters” and “Past Settings,” but there’s a lot of crossover, and it might just be easier to make it its own.  Even if it wouldn’t help with this novel, it’ll help when I rewrite TST.  It’s really just deciding if I want to do it prior to jumping into this, and this all started because I needed to make a map lol.  I am absolutely awful at direction so a visual representation would really help; however, I’m also shit at drawing and measuring distances so there’s that, too.  All of the online map creators are either too complicated or cost money, so here I am doing it freehand.  I have notes about where certain places were located as well as the story’s starting and ending point.  It’s just filling out the details between.

I want to make a new collage for the story since I have better picture representations of the characters now, but Pixlr no longer has that so I think I’d have to use pic stitch on my phone unless I can find another site for it.  Annoying.

Project: Story Audio Recording
Title: Northern Lights
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Type: Fanfiction
Length: Novel
Fandom: Final Fantasy VII
Status: Editing
Progress: Second edit of Chapter 2

I’m doing a second edit of Chapter 2 because I’m a perfectionist lol.  Not that I’m finding too much to fix, and I can always try out different things as I’m recording, but I like to have a solid foundation before I do.

Project: Story Audio Recording
Title: The Broken Rose
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Type: Fanfiction
Length: Novel
Fandom: Final Fantasy VII
Status: Editing
Progress: Adding sound effects

Lots of progress on this one!  I finished up the sound effects and added the music so the audio is essentially done.  I’ve created a WMM file for it and am now starting on that part.  I’m going to do an opening title scene like I did for NL, but instead of being numerous still images, it’s going to be an ambient video as I said.  I found a site called Pexels that has them for free, though you can and should throw them some money through PayPal.  I found a few I really like and downloaded one of them.  I’m not sure if I’m going to keep the same one throughout or switch it up, but either way it won’t take nearly as long as Northern Lights.  I still can’t believe how quick it took me to do this.  It was less than a month to record and do edits on the audio.  I’m pretty sure I just started this project this year, and it’s already going way faster than NL lol.  At least those growing pains were worth something.  I was looking at Pond5 for videos, but holy fuck are they expensive.  The cheapest one was $25 and one of the ones I really liked was $69!  That doesn’t even come close to the one I found for over $300.  Yeah they were nice, but the ones on Pexels are just as good tbh.

In Progress

  • Game Reviews: Final Fantasy VI – I’ve only made scant progress on this since I’ve been in sort of a “new idea notetaking” frenzy, but I think I did start going into the existential nihilism the game’s antagonist presents.
  • Book Reviews: Unraveling Oliver by Liz Nugent – I wound up rereading what I had and it wasn’t nearly as terrible as I thought.  It is mostly in chronological order, so I do have a good starting point.  I marked the point I want to continue from.

I’ve been looking into Squarespace for my author page now per advice from my author friend Kat who switched hers over to it a little while ago.  She told me a few other author peeps did so, too, so I’m more interested in that now.  I took a look and favorited some of the templates.  Kat even suggested I include my fanfiction over there, which I really wasn’t going to do, but it is writing.  It’s a consideration.  I was going to talk about the short story I plan to self-publish  (eventually…) as well as use it to keep people up to date with my research for essays.  It’s all just a work in progress and I have literally no idea what I’m doing.

Speaking of progress, a lot of things haven’t made much because I’ve been in a literal notetaking frenzy for the past two weeks.  I get like this where ridiculous ideas just come nonstop and it’s all I can do to write them down.  I have wanted to write smut for a while now lol and I’ll just get into these moods where I do nothing but take notes for some more mature content.  I’d obviously need a pen name if I’m going to do that, and I’ve even do so for ones that are fanfic based.  I’ve been wanting to write alternative situations for The Broken Rose for some years now and even created scenarios for how things might be.    I had to organize my folders on OneNote and still have more to do on that.  I’m a little bummed you can’t password lock Scrivener, but per googling why, it’s more than just one file.  I get it so I’ll just use OneNote.  I’m such a paranoid polly lol.  I think OneNote is less secure because it’s backed on on Microsoft OneDrive, which is a website and I now have Dropbox.  I don’t think Scrivener has that.  You can sync it on iTunes, but I don’t think there’s a website.  I could also totally be talking out my ass.

So yeah…lots of things going on.  Old ideas, new ideas, and everything in between.
