The State of the Writer: 5/30/21

A post updated every other Sunday discussing my current writing projects and any completed the prior two weeks.

Finished Projects: 0

Project: Story
Working Title:
The High Archon
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Type: Original
Length: Novel
Current Word Count: 1673
Status: Drafting
Progress:
Chapter 1

I actually started drafting the first chapter last week.  Well…it’s more of a reworking of the draft of the first chapter, but I still consider it progress.  I’m doing something new and using Scrivener as my writing platform, going back and forth from the Word doc I already have.  I’m a bit paranoid about it though and will probably make a Word backup.  Scrivener hasn’t given me any problems and it saves automatically, but you know there’s always that one time.

So far I’m pretty happy with what I have. The mien of this first chapter is really playful and adventurous.  There’s a major tonal shift later, but this is sort of the “establishing shot” of the main character with her BFF.  It is so hard not to give too much away or infodump all over the place lol, BUT I’m also trying to throw in foreshadowing and symbolism.  Of course I can always go back and edit, but I have this thing where if I don’t feel like I’ve made “proper” progress, I won’t be encouraged enough to continue.  It’s weird.

It’s been a bit of a battle to have the energy to work on this, but I am happy with the progress I’ve made.  I ironed a few things out, and I’m excited to see where it’s going to go.

Project: Story
Working Title: Helpless (The Broken Rose AU)
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Type: Fanfiction
Fandom: Final Fantasy VII
Length: Novel
Current Word Count: 2016
Status: Drafting
Progress: Chapter 1

Can’t believe I never put the word count on this when I started.  Ah well, I had no idea what I was doing then…I’m still not sure I do.  I think this might just be a self-satisfaction project that may never see anyone else’s eyes.  There’s a lot of repetition (even more than the original fanfic…can you even say that???  “Original fanfic??”  It’s an oxymoron lol), but it makes me happy and expands on something I really like so

Project: Story Audio Recording
Title: Northern Lights
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Type: Fanfiction
Length: Novel
Fandom: Final Fantasy VII
Status: Finished edit of Chapter 2
Progress: Prepping to record Chapter 2

Still just need the opportunity to record.  I think the hubs is bowling this Tuesday for the last time, but I might see if I can do some recording on Monday, too, since I’m off that day.

Project: Story Audio Recording
Title: The Broken Rose
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Type: Fanfiction
Length: Novel
Fandom: Final Fantasy VII
Status: Prepping Chapter 2
Progress: Adding dialogue instruction notes

I broke this one up into seven sessions at around two pages a piece.  Like Northern Lights, I’ve been adding bold and bracketed notes to some of the dialogue so I know how to read it prior to the dialogue tag.  As mentioned before, it reminds me of play or I suppose screenwriting.  It’s just easier to see how I should say it first when doing a recording.  While I wait to have time to record, I can at least update this and essentially prep everything beforehand so when I can record that’s all I have to worry about.

Project: Author Website
Title: TBD
Status: Need to purchase
Progress: On hold

I’m putting this on hold until I do next month’s finances, because I can’t make any more progress until I purchase the site.  My free trial expired before I had a chance to really make the website.  I’m still going with Squarespace since I’ve heard good things, but there’s so much going on, so I just don’t feel like dealing with it right now lol.  It’s $200 a year, which isn’t terrible, so I know I’m going to do it, but I want to actually have the time to work on it before I drop that amount of money.

In Progress

  • Game Reviews: Final Fantasy VI – Finally, finally, I’m in the music section lol.  That’s still complicated, but in a different way, so it’s refreshing.  I think music is the last section before I wrap it up, so I can see the light at the end of the cave.
  • Book Reviews: Unraveling Oliver by Liz Nugent – I am definitely going too hard on the synopsis ugh.   This fucking review I swear to god…I don’t know why it’s giving me so much trouble, and I can’t just give up on it.  It’s the analysis not the review actually.  I’m done the review, but this is the type of novel that warrants analysis and exploration.  I think my issue is I always think I need to provide a synopsis of the story, but I don’t think I do since anyone reading the analysis either has read it or will be able to pick up enough from what I’m saying to get the pertinent parts.  So it might be back to the drawing board *sigh*

I got my first covid shot this Friday.  It’s the Pfizer one, and I feel pretty good.  I know the first one isn’t nearly as bad as the second, so I’m still a bit apprehensive, but no matter the side effects, it’s still better than getting covid.  I’ll probably take off the Monday after just in case I need a few days more of recovery.

House hunting is still a bust, and I’m super salty about this one Mr. TSN found.  We couldn’t even get a showing.  There were 80 in one day, and it was gone by the next week, but my realtor said the tide seems to be turning, so fingers crossed.

  2. I’m always happy to see these updates! ❤ My apologies for being absent from WP lately; the past few months have been very chaotic with work, travel, sick animals etc. If things could be calmer this summer, that would be great. 😀 Anyway, it's awesome to see that you're digging further into THA and also doing more TBR spinoff things! Although obviously I'd love to read "Helpless" someday, I also think it's really valuable to be able to create for yourself and have some private writing. I've been trying to do that more lately too and it makes writing feel less like work all around, I think. 🙂

    • Oh I’m sure! I *think* I sent you an email a little while ago, but I don’t remember how long ago that was lol. I’m trying to work on it! I have less than 500 words written, but I’m currently going through the first chapter and reworking things. I have that as a template for a little, but I also keep going back to take notes on the world building.

I have SO many TBR and NL spinoff ideas. I think I’ll be able to make them all shareable.

I hope you get some time to relax this summer.
