The more I think about it, the less weird it seems that I like stuff like this. While I definitely have favorite genres, at the end of the day I just want a good story and Liane Moriarity delivers. This is one of those where I guessed some of the main points, but it doesn’t take away from my enjoyment, because there are aspects of the situation that could go another way (plus I sometimes just know how a story is going to go). I am noticing a pattern with this author though. She likes to have a character wind up with or rather stay with someone I don’t think they should. That kind of frustrates me, but it is what it is. I enjoy stories that don’t have easy answers or choices, and Moriarity has the talent to at least have acceptable justification for her characters’ (poor) decisions.
Title: The Oedipus Trilogy
Series: The Theban Plays
Date Added: July 25, 2020
Date Started: March 18, 2021
Date Finished: September 26, 2021
I gleaned so many notes from this and actually enjoyed reading it. Even though this is for my research, it didn’t feel like as much of a chore as some of the other materials I have for that. I don’t know if I’m going to review it though I’m leaning toward no. I’d want to talk about it in regards to comparative texts, and it’s not like Oedipus Rex et al hasn’t been examined to death by actual scholars, so I don’t have much to add to the discourse on it alone, but given what I normally hear about it in regards to FFVII, yeah, I have better things to say lol.
Title: The Duc de L’Omelette
Author: Edgar Allan Poe
Date Added: February 17, 2020
Date Started: September 30, 2021
Date Finished: September 30, 2021
No way in hell this was the 24 pages it says it is on Goodreads. I think I flipped like two or three on my Kindle and I was done. Whatever. So I wasn’t paying a lot of attention to it probably because I got distracted by the fact that it mentioned ortolan, and I recognized that from an episode of American Dad! The unlucky duke doesn’t even get to eat his sinful swallow though as he chokes on an olive and winds up in hell where the devil demands he strip. Since this isn’t a Lil Nas X video and stripper poles hadn’t been invented yet, our eggy duke declines and challenges hot Luc to a duel. The devil doesn’t duel so they play cards to decide if the duke gets to return to his ortolan or has to remain in hell. He wins but also decides he’d be okay being the devil…so maybe this was a Lil Nas X video. Huh. Anyway I looked this up after I finished reading. I’m not sure if I’m going to review it either, but I am going to read another Poe before I move on to the next classic author in my rotation.
Title: Big Little Lies
Author: Liane Moriarity
Date Added: September 25, 2021
Date Started: October 1, 2021
It’s very typical Liane Moriarity which I’m totally okay with. I actually have to remember to read more of this as it’s a library borrow so I only have it for a limited amount of time.
Title: Under the Whispering Door
Author: T. J. Klune
Date Added: June 27, 2021
Date Started: September 25, 2021
This was just supposed to be a sample I read, but the first chapter was so engaging I couldn’t stop. The MC is such an asshole, which you’d think would be offputting, but he’s just so terrible and then he dies that you have to keep on going. Also I’m a sucker for a redemption story, and even more…IT’S GAY AF Y’ALL. If it’s gay I say okay and if it’s queer please bring it here!
Title: Maternal Horror Film: Melodrama and Motherhood
Author: Sarah Arnold
Date Added: July 20, 2019
Date Started: August 17, 2021
I have one more section left before I’m done with the introduction. I’m going to move on to another research/reference book afterwards. Probably the Heidegger and then I might start circling back to the ones I’ve already started.
Title: The Wind’s Twelve Quarters
Series: Hainish Cycle
Author: Ursula K. Le Guin
Date Added: August 30, 2014
Date Started: July 26, 2021
If I’d known how close I was to the end of this and that I was on the last story, I probably would’ve read this one on my lunch break. I’ll probably end up completing it tomorrow.
Title: A Sky Beyond the Storm
Series: An Ember in the Ashes
Author: Sabaa Tahir
Date Added: November 1, 2020
Date Started: March 17, 2021
I read a few more chapters! I even got one in before doing this update while I was waiting for my pizza to cool :p
I’m so freaking tired. This one took around three hours to do because I decided to buy ten books these past two weeks; I finished three; and I started two. When nothing changes these updates are super simple. I can mostly copy and paste from last time, but when I start something new I have to get the link and image from Goodreads. I’ve also started a new exercise schedule. I’m trying to do it more regularly and do things that might help my back. I need to incorporate in some more stuff, but right now I’m just trying to establish a good pattern. Gah, I always crave sweets in the evening and we don’t have any sweets. What’s up with that???
