The State of the Writer: 2/20/21

<–The State of the Writer: 2/6/22         The State of the Writer: 3/6/22–>

A post updated every other Sunday discussing my current writing projects and any completed the prior two weeks.

Finished Projects: 1

Project: Story
Working Title:
The High Archon
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Type: Original
Length: Novel
Current Word Count: 11,228
Prior Word Count: 10,684
Word Difference: +544
Status: Adding line edits from notes
Progress:
Chapter 2

It took an embarrassingly long time to add in the parts about the “magic feather” (it makes sense in context).  I kept running into issues with connecting what I already had with what I needed to add.  Of course there’s a lot that will be smoothed out in editing, but I wanted to at least make the effort.

I only have one more addition to put in before I get to the more macro edits.  I’m not quite sure how I’m going to do them, but I did color code the ones I could just like the rest.  The time thing is going to be something I deal with in editing, but the next “macro” is the reason the MC was chosen in the first place.  I…was a total ass in thinking I didn’t have one when it was a cornerstone of my first novel *facepalm*  Oh well, I can’t be on the ball all the time, and let’s face it; I’m usually on the floor with the ball on top of me.

Project: Story
Title:
The Threads of Sorrow
Genre: Paranormal Romance/Fairytale Retelling
Type: Original
Length: Short Story
Current Word Count: 7360
Status: Editing/Revising
Progress:
Received first round of edits

I haven’t done anything else with this story directly, but I did make the decision to just pay someone to make my website for me lol.  I keep pushing back the process, mostly because it costs $200 to buy the site and that’s not a chunk of change I can just chuck around willy-nilly.  I realized it would just be better to have someone else do it.  I do know what I want on the front page, but other than that 🤷🏾‍♀️

Once I get the author’s page set up, I’ll take the next steps with this story.

Project: Story Audio Recording
Title: Northern Lights
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Type: Fanfiction
Length: Novel
Fandom: Final Fantasy VII
Status: Editing
Progress: Adding in sound effects

I figured out my sound effect issue from last week in regards to the “shimmery, cold” noise and having a similar sound close by.  I bought the $3 one from Pond5 and had a conversation with my BFF about how the samples have “Pond5, Pond5” repeating in them so people can’t steal them.  Now all I can hear is her saying it and it’s hilarious.

I realized I didn’t add in the voice effect I wanted for Sephiroth not too long after dialogue started so I had to go back and fix that.  He doesn’t have any dialogue in the first chapter, but since I did Chapter 1 of The Broken Rose with it, I had notes on how (thanks Past TSN!) so it was easy to set up.  I remembered I wanted him to have a sort of “Voice of the Legion” thing, but like not so extreme in his basic speech.  What’s nice about something like this is you can make it more intense in certain situations, which is what I did in TBR’s first chapter.  It comes off as this slightly echo-y quality to his voice, but it’s not overbearing.  I want it to be subtle.

Anyway I caught up to where I was before and can continue adding in sound effects and fixing the voice as I go along.

In Progress

  • Game Reviews: Final Fantasy VI – I started the first edit of the Story Summary.  I’m trying to remember what’s after that.  I don’t recall if I did a full music section, though I probably did since the music in FFVI is 🔥
  • Yearly Posts: The Books of 2021 – Obviously I didn’t post this before the review of Meg Elison’s novel, but that’s alright.  I’m still working on it and will hopefully have it out before the first March update.
  • Book Reviews: A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee (Montague Siblings) – This is going to be one of those longform, in-depth reviews I might end up splitting into Review and Analysis.  I’m still gathering all of my Kindle notes for it at this point, and I have a lot.

I’m working on a bunch of stuff in the background that I haven’t posted about here.  It’s more like…it’s not definitive stuff so there’s not really a good way to talk about it?  Like I’m adding ideas to OneNote for both stories and essays.  With the latter I’m working on organization so that I can rewrite what needs to be rewritten as well as compile what I need to research for those and others I still need to write.  Even though this is a lifelong project, I think I’m at the point where I can start focusing on particular topics in order to write specific essays.  I go back and forth on whether or not I want to make sure I’ve read certain foundational works, but then I also think I could potentially update things later?  I don’t know.  I just know I want to really start working towards this, and I definitely want to finish the one GOT piece I started about how FFVII did the “descent into burning madness” better omfg the snark was REAL in that 😂  Past TSN made an outline and everything.  That bitch was ready.  That’s more of a fun essay though I suppose…or at least the beginning is.  I have more comparatives with ASOIAF as well as others.  I do enjoy the organization and figuring out how to put things together.  I just work better with structure.

Who else has seen Peacemaker?  So.  Effing.  Good.  The season finale was this past Thursday, and my god, that show is everything.  How is something hilarious, action-packed, emotionally damaging/traumatic, diverse, ethically/philosophically stimulating, and has excellent character development, and a bomb-ass soundtrack?

I’m also re-watching Russian Doll, something I’ve wanted to do for a while, but since Season 2 is dropping soon I have no more excuses.

I gave Doom Patrol a try, but stopped in the middle of the second episode.  I just couldn’t do it anymore, and I feel bad because I love Brendan Frasier.  The narrator/villain guy is annoying AF, and the Jane character irritates me, too.  I don’t know if it’s because I’m kind of tired of how sci-fi/fantasy does (what they think is) DID, but when I only like one out of a cast of characters it’s time to call it quits.  I might do the thing where I look up what happens in it so I can be in the know without having to sit through it.

Probably the best new thing I’ve seen though is Special on Netflix.  It’s about Ryan, a gay man with cerebral palsy trying to navigate the world with two marginalized identities, but what’s fascinating is how the gay one doesn’t really cause him much trouble in and of itself, but in regards to his CP it does.  It’s an excellent case of how identities interact.  Also I would 100% watch a show just about Kim, the fat, Indian deuteragonist and Ryan’s BFF.  It’s just…so good.  The first season has 15 minute episodes that jump up to the typical half an hour in the second and last, and I really liked it for that because I could watch an episode while eating a meal and then either keep going or move on to something else if my attention was wandering.

What have you been watching lately?
