The State of the Writer: 3/20/22

<–The State of the Writer: 3/6/22         The State of the Writer: 4/3/22–>

A post updated every other Sunday discussing my current writing projects and any completed the prior two weeks.

Finished Projects: 0

Project: Story
Working Title:
The High Archon
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Type: Original
Length: Novel
Current Word Count: 11,211
Prior Word Count: 11,215
Word Difference: -4
Status: Editing Chapter 1 and adding in macro edits from notes
Progress:
Chapter 2

I did add some words, but it looks like I cut out a few more than I did, which I’m totally okay with.  My note to myself is to just keep editing from where I left off, but I feel like I might need to so some organization sessions.  I just don’t like how my notes are currently on OneNote.  It probably doesn’t help that I have this both there and on Scrivener.  OneNote is mostly for “To Do” lists and reminders whereas Scrivener is for more honed and organized thoughts.  Because I can update OneNote on my phone and it’ll sync to the computer app and I haven’t figured out how to do that with Scrivener yet.

I’m only on the five out of twenty-one pages for my editing, but I’m making good progress.  I also love the banter between Maya and her BFF Caemlyn.  It’s going to sound so egotistical, but I literally laugh aloud at some of their conversations and antics.  On the surface their relationship is the clichéd “boy is in love with his female best friend,” and it’s even more tropey in that “female BFF” is promised to another with that other kind of being the ruler of the world.  Awkward.  However, Maya is aware and has always been aware of his feelings, and while she doesn’t share them, there’s nothing to stop them from doing things like kissing, hugging, etc.  The default in this world isn’t het-monogamous, and it’s been fascinating exploring  that kind of thing.

I have a ways to go before I hit the next place to macro-edit.  I highlight things I need to concentrate on and the next is on page seven.

Oh shit!  I almost forgot about this and it’s like the most important.  I’m thinking of changing the title lol.  Since it refers to the ipso facto ruler of the world and the person my MC is “promised” to, but I actually have been calling him “the Sovereign” more often than not, and I really like that title better lol.  It already has a definition and is easier to explain.  I’ll keep “High Archon” as one of his other titles, but I think people are going to reference him as “the Sovereign,” buuuut now I don’t know what I’d change the title to haha.  I don’t want to just call it “The Sovereign,” and even though the narrative starts and focuses on Maya, especially at the beginning, I want the title to have something to do with him.  Idk I’ll figure it out.

Project: Story Audio Recording
Title: Northern Lights
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Type: Fanfiction
Length: Novel
Fandom: Final Fantasy VII
Status: Editing
Progress: Adding in sound effects

I managed to figure out all of the sound effects that Past TSN dropped the ball on, but now I need to decide if and how I’m going to use certain sounds to represent certain things/themes.  I’m trying to use what I established in Chapter 1 and keep that going.  I do have some cataloged, and the next step is to go through Chapter 2 and decide what sounds I might use.  While this chapter is “easier” and I’m sure it’ll take less time than the first (god I hope it doesn’t take two years), I was hopeful it would be out by now.

Project: Research & Essay Organization
Status: Organizing Essay Notes
Progress: Working through notes for FFVII & ASOIAF comparative essays

Just organizing this is an undertaking, but I think it’ll make less work in the back end.  I’ve gone through four essay ideas so far, but I don’t think I’m completely finished with any of them.  I want to make a “General Refence” list for things I want to have under my belt for all the essay ideas like Joseph Campbell’s The Hero With a Thousand Faces or LML’s Mythical Astronomy essays/videos.  If I don’t know what I need to do I don’t know how I’m going to do it, you know?

Project: Author Website
Status: Renewed Free Trial (accidentally)
Progress: Planning time to work on

Yeah, so I accidentally did another free trial.  They only last two weeks and this was last week, and I haven’t done a thing with it yet.  I was trying to figure out the best layout to use and I accidentally clicked on the free trial for it.  I think I know the one I’m going to go with.  So what I need it just a good day to purchase and start.

In Progress

  • Game Reviews: Final Fantasy VI – I’m watching a Let’s Play of the Pixel Remaster right now, so of course I’m getting more insights as I’m editing the Story Analysis section.  I’m noting them down and might add them in later.
  • Yearly Posts: The Books of 2021 – I think I’m pretty much done with this and just need to edit it, but it’s been a while since I’ve worked on it.
  • Book Reviews: A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee (Montague Siblings) – I started this and I’m really happy with how it’s going.  Organizing before makes it so much less stressful.  I haven’t worked much on it, but I’m hoping to at least get the majority of it done before next update.

I’ve been in one of my idea bursts/note taking flurries for the past two weeks.  It was an idea I had that spawned from TBR alternatives, and when I get into that mode I just can’t concentrate on anything else.  But millions of notes, OneNote pages/tabs, and several Excel and Word docs later, and I think I can work on other things lol.  I would’ve made more progress on my WIP and the essay organization, but I can’t be mad when I get more ideas to one day tackle 😅
