A biweekly post updated every other Wednesday detailing my current reading projects and what new titles I’ve added to my to-read list. Title links go to Goodreads, and if you have an account there feel free to friend me! I’d love to see what you’re reading and/or planning to read.

Title: Flowers for the Sea
Author: Zin E. Rocklyn
Date Added: December 4, 2021
Date Started: October 18, 2022
Date Finished: October 27, 2022
This was decent. I wanted some more information about the nature of the pregnancy/child, but it did live up to it’s Rosemary’s Baby reference if not Octavia Butler. Since I haven’t read her yet I can’t say, though I do understand why her name was invoked. I think the author was going for the more vague “the unknown is horrifying” angle, but some more details would’ve been nice. The final line of the novel is bad ass though.
Books Reading: 6
Title: The Cruel Prince
Series: The Folk of the Air
Author: Holly Black
Date Added: August 1, 2019
Date Started: October 31, 2022
Media: eBook/Kindle
Progress: 9%
Yeah…this book is what it’s about. I was a bit apprehensive rereading the blurb, but I love the way it’s written. The way the twins are treated in the Court reminds me of how my MC fared in my first novel.
Title: Hamlet
Author: William Shakespeare
Date Added: March 6, 2018
Date Started: October 23, 2022
So I actually haven’t started this yet. I just took note of the Dramatis Personae, which is what I’ve been doing with these plays to better keep track of all the characters. Granted I’ve read Hamlet before, but it’s been a while and it might be useful for my research.
Title: The Charmer, Volume 1
Series: Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter: Circus of the Damned
Author: Laurell K. Hamilton & Jessica Ruffner (adaptation)
Illustrator: Ron Lim
Date Added: September 25, 2022
Date Started: October 13, 2022
Okay so it’s weird but reading the graphic novel is making me like Jean-Claude less than I did when I read the original novels. Maybe seeing his inaction when Anita is in obvious danger and the constant pressure her to “be his” just doesn’t sit well with me anymore lol.
Title: Orishas, Goddesses, and Voodoo Queens: The Divine Feminine in the African Religious Traditions
Author: Lilith Dorsey
Date Added: May 29, 2020
Date Started: August 1, 2022
Media: Paperback
Progress: 14%
I just skipped ahead to Chapter 2 which is specifically about Oshun.
Title: Ecofeminism
Series Title: Critique Influence Change
Authors: Maria Mies & Vandana Shiva
Date Added: July 13, 2020
Date Started: May 3, 2022
Media: Paperback
Progress: 14%
I was expecting to find resources for environmentalism, feminism, and a synthesis of that of course, but I wasn’t expecting to find tie ins with more sci-fi aspects, though I suppose I shouldn’t be too surprised.
Title: House of Sky and Breath
Series: Crescent City
Author: Sarah J. Maas
Date Added: March 7, 2021
Date Started: February 23, 2022
Media: Physical/Hardback
Progress: 54%
*sigh* Nope. No progress on this one.
It’s later than I want it to be but at least I got this knocked out tonight instead of having to back date it.

I think I would have a lot more problems with the Anita Blake novels in general now, than when I read them. I much more prefer equal partnership romances to ownership. Then, of course, there comes the multitude of lovers and in my opinion, that feels much less romantic.

I always thought Anita was a big hypocrite for how she demanded certain behavior from her lovers that she wasn’t going to follow herself, but I also thought that made her an interesting character because I was certain LKH made her “unlikable” in that regard on purpose because she had other mitigating traits. Now there’s just so much cringe with these stories, which tells me I’ve definitely grown up hehe.

I like that she spotlights polyamorous couples, but it became mostly about the sex. Which I get, is where Anita gets a lot of her power but twenty something books in, gets old.

Completely agree. I think she was one of the first authors to ever do that, but I just feel like the quality of the writing suffered. I know there are fans who are more than happy with the new genre she writes in because what she does currently is not the same as what she did before.
