Progress: First edit of Chapter 11

One good thing about editing a letter chapter is I don’t have to think too hard about what I’m going to use for a weekly picture, and I have some decent candidates for the chapter image.  Editing is going slow on this one, but I’m hoping it picks up the next couple weeks since I’m officially on vacation.  I’d like to finish the first edit by the end of the week, incorporate any additional notes, and hopefully get the final edits out of the way.

Progress: Reviewing Chapter 11

This is the second “letter” chapter (with Chapter 5 being the first), but as I was doing my preliminaries last night, I ran into an integral question.  Is this chapter necessary?  With writing or more specifically editing, that’s something you always want to ask.  Is this chapter/part necessary to the story?  Is it needed to further your and therefore the characters’ goal(s)?

My idea with the letter chapters was to show the past, present, and future through Aeris’s eyes.  The first letter is all about her horrible past and her struggles to reconcile it with the wonderful present.  There are ideas of worthiness and blame she has to wrestle with along with a sort of survivor’s guilt.  She was saved from that horrendous existence, but she can’t stop thinking about those who are still suffering, and that’s tearing her up inside.  She wonders why she was worthy to be rescued when she could physically “take” the worst kinds of abuse, because she’d just come back, but others would actually die.

I finally finished the third edit/revision of Chapter 10.  Since I did so much, I obviously have to do a fourth (and hopefully last) one.  I have a sinking sensation that Chapter 11 is going to be a difficult edit, too.  I’d started it before insofar as doing some color coding, but then I decided I’d hold off until I did the full edit.  There’s never a dull moment in the life of a writer/blogger.

The Editing of Northern Lights – The Box Contains More Chapter 8

These are the Editing Notes for my FFVII fanfiction Northern Lights (which you can find at the end of that link).  I will be discussing a myriad of topics along with my frequently tangential and harried editing process.  You should be able to garner some enjoyment and insight from this without having read the story and/or without prior knowledge of the original game, but if you’re a fan of paranormal romance and/or dark fantasy, you may find it to your liking.  The story will be spoiled in this editing examination, though I will do my best to mark spoilers for any other narratives I mention.  Thanks for your interest and enjoy!

We open this next installment with my morbid answer, which you’ve all “urn-ed” *groan*

Future Narcissist here.  So I was doing this thing where I’d have a question at the end of some of my editing notes posts.  This was prior to my Question of the Week, and I suppose it was me attempting to create conversation or what I thought might create conversation even before I posted these.   I removed the question from the previous post, but I suppose I should’ve kept it so that what’s going on now makes sense.  It was “What do you want on your gravestone or urn?”  I’m planning on having it as a QOTW at some point probably in October.  I couldn’t remove my answer since it sparked quite a rant and one of my favorites/saddest actually…

I have no intention of being buried.  Rotting in a coffin is not the way I’d like to spend eternity.  I never want the answer to the question, “What’s in the box???!!!!!” to ever be “Adrienne.”  Advent Children: the movie where the answer to the question “What’s in the box????!!!!” is “Your mom.”  Hahahaha *cries*

Yeah…so I used to use gallows humor as a shield really hardcore.  This is barely scratching the surface of the fucked up things I used to say.  Then I realized it was just a cover and a flimsy one at that.  I accepted that things still bother me and always will.  I still love dry, sardonic humor though.  Hopefully, you can tell that if you’ve read Northern Lights.

This make me think of another dead mom story (god I’m crass…) that I swear I already told you guys before.  It was back when I was a caseworker nearly seven years ago (did not make that up).  I worked with foster kids and was only there for nine month because I could not handle that shit.  I brought it home with me every night and had several nervous breakdowns because of it.  There were many, many straws, but one of the most fucked up ones came about after one of my clients died.  She had five children, all daughters, and her oldest was on my caseload.  My supervisor thought that because I also had a dead mother that I would be a great person to deal with this situation by going to both the viewing and the funeral over the course of two fucking days.

Final Fantasy Friday: Final Fantasy Tarot – II The High Priestess

<–I The Magician                                                                              III The Empress–>

This is my current Final Fantasy Friday post where I’ll be discussing which characters I think exemplify each card of the Major Arcana.  If this is your first time here, please head over to my Final Fantasy Tarot page for explanation.  Now onto the next card!

II The High Priestess

The High Priestess & Aeris

Update:  Thanks to carrie482 of Tarot Newbie for locating the artist for the picture of Aeris above!  It’s entitled Aeris: art neauvou by saorimaru.  You should both check out their blog and the artist’s Deviant Art page 🙂

***Spoilers for Final Fantasy VII.***

The High Priestess is none other than indomitable Aeris from FFVII who even past death did not fail to complete her fated task.  I would love to credit the artist for the flower maid’s picture, as it is itself reminiscent of the associated card, but alas, I cannot find them.

The High Priestess represents the feminine divine, and there’s a great deal of esoteric symbolism involved with her blue robes and the lunar crescent at her feet.  The former not only references Mary (aka the Holy Mother), but also indicates flowing water, something Aeris is certainly associated with.  As for the latter I’ve said a great deal about how the moon is a major reference in the Final Fantasy series here (“The Eerie Reunion of FFVII and FFIV”) and here (“The Seventh Is the Darkest”)(where I also mention the triple goddess motif as it applies to her), and the pillars the High Priestess sits between are reminiscent of the outer pillars of the Tree of Life with HP (and by extension Aeris) in the middle.  This is quite interesting as the Qabalistic Tree of Life is made up of the Holy Sephiroth, nor can it be denied that Aeris and Sephiroth are intricately tied together.

Tree of Life

“Since Sephiroth exists, Aerith must exists.” –Nojima, Reunion Files

They’re two sides of a false coin with Seph basing his origins off of a cruel lie and Aeris knowing hers to be pure.  She’s the balance between two worlds that belong together (Cetra and human) as the High Priestess sits where the Column of Equilibrium would be.  Conversely Sephiroth is the “unbalance” of two worlds that were forced together (alien and human).  Aeris is a natural hybrid born of love and mutual respect, whereas Sephiroth was born of perversion and arguably something worse (see link to “The Seventh Is the Darkest” essay above).  They aren’t the only or even truest “two sides of the same coin” motif in the game (and I swear I talked about this in one of my essays, but I’ll be damned if I can find it now), but this will be discussed more extensively in later essays.

Aeris may portray the trope of “the magic girl” on the surface, but the reality of her full powers are deeper than the lake in which she was entombed.

Alternates: Yuna (X)

Nobody guessed Aeris but two people guessed the alternate, and in truth Yuna is just as good for Aeris as the High Priestess for similar connective reasons per her own story.  I’m being a bit cryptic so as not to give the characters for any other cards away, but I will be talking about Yuna again.  Not necessarily as a card of her own (spoilers I haven’t decided all of the Major Arcana yet), but she will definitely be mentioned!

Give a nice round of applause to LightningNightNova (if I messed up the capitalization of your name I apologize!) and Mr. Panda for their excellent and insightful guesses!

Next week is III The Empress.  Leave your guesses for whom you think I might pick in the comments!  As with this week’s if you guess the game they come from and/or one of the alternates (I’m giving so many concessions lol.  I like giving people credit/shout outs), you’ll get credit, too.

Question of the Week: 2/14/16

<–Question of the Week: 2/7/16          Question of the Week: 2/21/16

The Question of the Week is posted every Sunday and will consist of a question followed by my answer and explanation to the same.  Some questions will only require a simple answer that could potentially be followed by an explanation.  Many questions will be writer oriented, but not all.  Everyone is encouraged to answer in the comments and discussions/follow up questions are more than welcome!

What’s your favorite OTP?

Since it’s Valentine’s Day I thought I’d forgo my nihilistic ennui about this “holiday” and post an appropriate question, but first I suppose I should define “OTP” for the uninitiated.  I normally just put a link for any odd and/or geeky terms, but I was unsatisfied with what I found.  TV Tropes defines it as the couple that a fan or a group of fans prefers above all others, and I…suppose that would suffice.

I find the term OTP itself problematic as it stands for “one true pairing,” which is a very YMMV statement since declaring something so subjective as “true” is bound to start a flame war.  I don’t participate in “whose ship is better” debates, because I don’t care whom people ship.  If I don’t like a particular ship, I don’t follow or read about it.  It’s that simple.  Like everything I am more than willing to have polite discourse about the pros/cons, ins/outs of character dynamics, but once it devolves into name calling and mudslinging, ,I respectfully bow out.  In short whomever you wish to put together is entirely up to you for whatever reason or no reason at all, and while I’m not wholly fond of the phrase OTP, it’s the simplest way to explain or ask about it the concept.

“Child, tuck yourself in bed.  Let me tell a story…”

This is from Child of Light.  I just finished playing a little bit more of that game, and it is nothing less than beautiful.  It’s my other play/review project.

Which I have finished and have a review for here.

If you have the means, please play it.  The battle system is the Grandia II engine and the soundtrack is the loveliest of the lovelies by Coeur de Pirate.  I’m listening to it right now.

Grandia II I’ve played, but never Grandia (I).  Perhaps I should put on that on my play/review list.  I’ve been a bit lacking in my FFII playing lately, but that shall be remedied this weekend.  My husband is participating in a fundraising tournament called Extra Life.  The link is there, but by the time anyone will be possibly reading this, 2014 will be long over and 2015 half told, but the event does occur every year, and it’s quite a noble cause.  You seek donations to help kids battle diseases, essentially earning them an…extra life.  I love puns on a good day, but especially when we’re talking about saving children.  I have a soft spot in my heart for the innocent, but back to Extra Life; on a specific day you play games for 24 hours after you’ve garnered your donations.  Any and all games are acceptable: video games, board games, card games, tabletop RPGs, etc.  Any and everything so long as you do it for 24 hours.  So yes, a very worthy cause, and I highly encourage you, noble readers, to at least education yourselves on it. As such I will have the apartment to myself this weekend, and after my errands are run and done, I shall play Final Fantasy and Child of Light to my heart’s content.  Perhaps I shall be super ambitious and catch up on all of my blog posts, but for now I sip my coffee and listen to the soundtrack to Child of Light on the Tube of You whilst editing and blogging for you.
