Games Demoed: 2

  • Harvestella – I wanted to include this again as a game demoed because I hadn’t decided on whether or not I was going to buy it, and now I’ve made a decision: YES.  First off I’m mad it doesn’t come out until 11/4/22 because I am all in.  I was getting into the rhythm of it with the action RPG elements and the farming ones.  It’s a really good balance.  I’m both invested in the story and my crops, and the music is of course *chef’s kiss*  I’ve already pre-ordered it, because after I finished the demo I didn’t know WHAT to do.  The data transfers over, which is really awesome, and I like that they give you 15 in game days.  It’s just the right amount to get you hooked.
  • Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris – This is another one I’m not sure about, but I’m leaning towards yes.  You can set the battle options to semi-auto to enjoy the story, and I am intrigued.  I know literally nothing about SAO, my only experience with it an AMV crossover with Advent Children I saw years ago that was fucking seamless.  I still have more demo to play so I’m hoping they’ll show more game elements like cooking et al.

I almost gave up on this because I suck at finding things lol, but I’m glad I stuck with it.  It’s a poignant metaphor about a little boy trying to help his sick sister through his imagination.  He’s the rabbit and she’s a little, sick plant.  The puzzles are pretty intuitive, though I’m not ashamed to admit I needed a little help with finding some of the elements.  It was actually quite addictive.  I’ll probably write up a quick review for it at some point.

What I Purchased

  • When the Past Was Around – $8.49 @ Nintendo eShop

What I Demoed

  • Songbird Symphony – A combination platformer and rhythm game.  Totally up my alley.
  • Blue Reflection: Second Light – I don’t know how I feel about the battle system in the game.  I only had one fight, so I didn’t have a lot of time to get used to it.  I’m intrigued by the story, but the demo didn’t have a save and I didn’t get to finish it.  If anyone has played this game, let me know what you think of it.
  • Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain – Will definitely pick this up at some point.  I love little games like this.  It’s cute; it’s challenging, and I’m always a sucker for quiz/puzzle games.  I remember Brain Age for the regular DS, which this kind of reminds me of.  I wish I could find those for my DS, or maybe Nintendo will port them to the 3DS or Switch.
  • When the Past Was Around – Well I bought it so obviously the demo was a success.  I love point-and-click games, especially one with such whimsical artwork and calm music.  The puzzles are also logical and not ultra obscure.  I just swear to fuck if this game has the same theme as GRIS I will not be happy lol.

This is clearly just the first half of the entire story.  I made a list of questions that needed answered and maybe one of them was.  I can already see what the second game is shaping up to be, and I cannot wait.  I literally have no complaints with any of the Ace Attorney games.  They are some of the best written video games ever made and definitely make it into my top 20 list of such.

It took me longer than I’d like to admit to figure how how to get to the second game, but I did it and am currently in the midst of the third case.  Obviously, I have to hold off on looking up anything about the lovely Lord van Zieks until I finish the entire thing, but that’s okay; I still get to look at him.

If you need someone to punish, I volunteer as tribute ❤

What I Demoed

  • Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars – I kept running into the word “Advent” left and right a few weeks ago.  I was watching The Sinking City, a Lovecraft inspired horror game where one of the main throughfares was Advent Avenue.  Then YouTube kept recommending I rent/watch Advent Children, Tales of Berseria had an event called the Advent, and then this game has a Castle Advent.  Granted this is a Squeenix game, which of course means the music is fucking lit.  The voice acting is excellent, too.  The narrator sounds like a crusty, old storyteller.  I’m 100% buying this when it comes out on the 28th.  It’s like Final Fantasy meets Magic: The Gathering (not that I know anything about Magic: The Gathering.  It’s just Final Fantasy with cards).  I spent around three hours playing through the entirety of the demo, and I’ve been playing the in-game card game almost every day.  I like it almost as much as I like Triple Triad, which has long been my favorite FF card game.

I finished finished this during the two day power outage I mentioned in my latest SOTR post.  I only had one Asinine Attorney case left.  Those were interesting and fun.  More lighthearted and silly than the normal cases, not that AA isn’t silly sometimes, but the stakes weren’t nearly as dire.  Both Phoenix and Apollo had one, so I did Polly’s the other day.  At this point I am entirely caught up with Phoenix Wright, so I don’t know what I’m going to do.  Are they making more?  Are they going to make more?  Should I play Professor Layton now?   Should I google if they’re making more AA games?  *googles*  Nothing new since April 2019??!!?  It says they are making a new game, but there are no details.  I…guess we have to wait.

Just like the prior AA games, this one has a compelling overarching story.  The writer/writers of these knows what they hell they’re doing.  All of the secret connections and inner workings are just amazing.

I don’t really remember when I started/finished this again, but I know I picked it up from the Nintendo eShop on the 7th and I’ve already played through it, so that’s good enough.  This was an easy purchase and replay because the game is just so good.  It has replay value because the puzzles are complicated and compelling enough that you still have to either remember what you did or figure them out again.  I’m really hoping they release the rest of the series on the Switch.

My Top 5 Games of 2019

I didn’t play a ton of games in 2019, but I did finish 14.  I don’t consider that a lot comparatively, but it’s better than zero.  Because not every game has an “ending” per se (think puzzle games and other non-narrative ones), that helped up my count.

Here are my Top 5.

5.  Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl

Cover of Etrian Odyssey: The Millennium GirlI played one other EO game before, Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth, and I really liked it, but I was worried Millennium Girl would have the same level cap…and it did.  You can only get to Level 70 until you defeat one of the elemental dragon emperors, which opens up the next ten levels.  Defeating another dragon will release another ten levels, and beating the last will open them all.  I understand it, but it still kind of annoys me lol.  It could just be a YMMV situation, though, as many people love these games, and I can’t say I didn’t enjoy it.

So the prosecutor in this game has a hilarious and ironic status, which just goes along with the bonkers situations all the characters get into.  He’s apparently an ex-samurai with a pet bird that likes to terrorize the judge, and he uses the honorific “dono.”  I have one more case even after the one I’m still on, so there are more hijinks to look forward to.
