Nathaniel Gordon walks two worlds—that of the living and the dead. Barely human, he’s earned the reputation of a Bonekeeper, the scourge of grave robbers. He believes his old life over, until one dreary burial he meets the woman he once loved and almost married.

Lenore Kenward stands at her father’s grave, begging the protection of the mysterious guardian, not knowing he is her lost love. Resolved to keep his distance, Nathaniel is forced to abandon his plan and accompany Lenore on a journey into the mouth of Hell where sea meets sky, and the abominations that exist beyond its barrier wait to destroy them.

*****Some minor spoilers for the narrative in discussion.*******

Grace Draven shows off her ability to subvert established narratives and tropes in this Victorian steampunkish tale of stolen bodies, a Lovecraftian portal, lost loves, and the resurrected dead.  The author also draws from her prior series Wraith Kings (linked in the Shares Paradigms With section above) in ways that though numerous are neither tedious nor redundant.

In Nathaniel Gordon’s case, he was denied even the chance at love with Lenore Kenward before perishing in an airship accident, nor was he allowed to lay unmolested, instead he was forced to inhabit the form so graciously revealed on the book’s cover.  A transfer of  consciousness from broken body into a new, binding all together with gehenna, which proves its meaning of “a place of fiery torment for the dead” in what our hero suffers upon revival.  By the time he’s past the agony, Dr. Harvel, the depraved scientist who made him, is dead, slain by Gideon, his original creation, and Nathaniel is in the first Guardian’s care, slowing recovering from death’s transition to a semblance of life.

Progress: Walz Castle

I’m still at Walz Castle, but I managed to loot the basement and snag myself 3000 GP and an Elf Cloak.  That stupid harpy down there attacked me three or four times, but I was able to run away, though it killed/knocked out two of my characters.  I attempted to fight/obtain Shiva, but she and her cohorts kicked my ass even though I took the advice on GameFAQS of switching everyone to a Black Mage and casting Ice.  I’m going to do some leveling and give it another try.  I might look up another walkthrough and see if there are any more tips, or I may just continue on to Walz Tower and come back for her later.

Console Capers

I have become a collector of consoles, or rather of “wishful” collector of one.  In cleaning up my Amazon wish list, I removed all of the books in favor of consoles, video games, recording equipment, etc.  I obviously still have my book list on Goodreads, and I figured people know me well enough to realize that Amazon or Barnes and Noble gift cards are still amazing and noble presents indeed without the need for specific titles (I’m starting to reconsider this as I believe Amazon will send you offers/deals based on what you have on your wish list, but that’s neither here nor there).

As I conceived of this post before I received my PS3 in the mail yesterday (pictures to come on Tuesday’s State of the Gamer post), I’ll still mention it in my list, but will leave it off the poll.

I’d like to be wise in the vein of Hungry Goriya who is the queen of game collection and not just jump at the first console I find for some exorbitant price (for example, the Sega Master System on Amazon is at a whooping $700!), but rather be more savvy, shop around, drive a harder bargain, utilize eBay.  There’s also Jay Street Video Games, which is hilariously right next door to the GameStop.

Nintendo Switch

If I manage to find one of those, I should trade Cheap Boss Attack!

Regular Retail: $299.99
Amazon: $375 – $19,499.99
eBay: $384.00

Easily the newest system on my list and the “it” item of the year.  People will be fighting over Nintendo’s newest offering this Christmas and the next just like the Wii.  Nor did you read that Amazon high price wrong.  Someone is legitimately trying to gouge some poor sucker for $20k (WTF?).  eBay is way more reasonable, and even Amazon has some used units for under $300.  I’ll probably try to snatch one up from Best Buy or Target (if I can ever catch someone in the electronics aisle).

Games I Most Want to Play

  • Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • Super Bomberman R
  • Mario Odyssey

PlayStation 3

Regular Retail: $399.99
Amazon: $209.00

It makes sense that Nintendo and Sony would be the first systems on my list since they respectively allowed me to first play the game series I love the most: Final Fantasy, and the reason I was so hellbent on obtaining my own PS3 once again had to do with a Final Fantasy, too.

I think I’ve already talked about my adventures in PS3 buying, but if I haven’t, I’ll regale you with the story on Tuesday.  Suffice it to say, I now have one in my hot, little hand, and I couldn’t be happier about it.  Granted, I’ll feel better once I set it up and it actually works.  I believe PS3s are backwards compatible in respect to PlayStation games (but not PlayStation 2 ones), so I may be able to give my old PS2 a rest.

Games I Most Want to Play

  • Final Fantasy XIII
  • Mass Effect Trilogy
  • Suikoden I & II
  • Chrono Cross
  • Castlevania
  • Xenogears

From Suikoden to the end, all of these games are ones I downloaded from the PSN that I didn’t realize were PS3 only, so I’m pretty pumped.

I finished up Fabul this week and am just about to take the fated journey by ship that ends with Leviathan.  Still haven’t started Dawn of Souls.  I thought it was a DS game instead of another GBA one for some reason, and those cartridges are elsewhere in my apartment.

I think I’ve given up on this.  I’m not very good at it, so I may find a Let’s Play to watch at some point.  I should replay Super Mario World at some point.  I kick ass at the game.  Not the Rainbow Road part of course, but I’m still pretty handy.

Ah this is what I’m really interested in.  So a few people told me about all the side quests with this game, but wow are there a lot of side quests.  You’ll be planning to do something, and all of a sudden another aspect is introduced.

I met the Girl Who Forgot Her Name this week.

girl-who-forgot-her-name

That’s the sound of a thousand cosplayers sewing a thousand costumes

And in the same play session was introduced to the Coliseum by a deep-voiced Tonberry.  The coliseum is a throwback to FFVI, and I’m annoyed at myself for not realizing I didn’t need to go back through the Nether Nebula in order to fight Shiva again (not that I could do it there anyway), but instead have to challenge her, Ifrit, and Ramuh in that arena.  Granted, they’re not available yet, and I got my ass handed to me by three moogles on chocobos, but that’s another far more embarrassing story.  I may challenge them again now that I know they’re weak against ice, buuut then again I may just go mirage hunting to make sure I have one from every area.  Gotta catch them all! *ahem* I mean I would like to complete as much of the game as possible.  I’ll more than likely play more tomorrow since I”ll have the apartment to myself for the evening and I should be home a bit earlier.

One more episode left for the finale.  I can’t believe it’s almost over, but there are two more games left and a new one on the horizon.  The latest episode Shepherd and crew found out about the reapers and holy shit was that intense.  I knew about them from watching my husband play a bit and taking numerous wiki walks, but it was still a chilling moment.  I’m actually wondering if some race millions upon millions if not billions of years ago built the machines, which then gained sentience and destroyed their masters similar to how the Geth drove the quarians into exile.  It would make a tragic kind of sense, but there’s nothing official about this.  Once I finish the last episode, I’ll jump right into ME 2.

Games Added to Playlist: 2

  1. Suikoden – my friend Matthew, who has a Twitch channel here, informed me I needed to add this and the second below to my backlog, and since we both love Final Fantasy, I know he knows what he’s talking about with it.
  2. Suikoden II – talked about this above.

Games Bought This Week: 4

Thanks to Cheap Boss Attack telling me about the PSN 10th Anniversary sale, I was able to get in there and pick up four games!  Now, I’m kind of a dumb ass and thought I’d be able to play them all on my PS4, but alas this is not the case.  Some of them are only available on the PS3, which is…kind of weird to me, and I’m wondering if I did something wrong when I picked them up.

  1. fLOw – the Well-Red Mage’s recent review put me onto this game (it was on my Add list last week), and since it was less than $5, I figured that was a good deal.
  2. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night – I just can’t shut up about this game, and why should I?  I already know it’s awesome and I’ve never played it yet.  It and the remaining purchases seem to only be available for the PS3 or Vita.  Maybe the Shameful Narcissist should learn how to read the fine print…but I really thought I did!
  3. Grandia – the first game in the Grandia series, which I believe has at least three.  I’ve played and love Grandia II.  At the very least I can give the original a try.
  4. Xenogears – how could I pass this one up?  It’s a Squeenix RPG and apparently even symbolism heavier and more esoteric than FFVII, which is damn shocking seeing as I decided to studying an entire religion due to VII.  If this is so or even if it’s just equal, it’s something I’m very interested in.

All in all I spent around $10 for four games.  Not too shabby.

What are you currently playing and/or watching? Is it something new or old?  Is it a first time run or a replay?  What’s the genre?  Would you recommend it?  What’s on your radar to play next?

You know if I’m going to play a Final Fantasy on a handheld I should be playing Dawn of Souls or FFIII.  That would make the most sense since I want to play/review those anyway, and I can do it alongside the main numbered games, but nah, I’m replaying IV again because I’m ridiculous.

I just finished Mt. Hobs and my next stop is Fabul.  I am further along in my story recap for the IV review than I am in this play-through so that’s…something I suppose.

I haven’t played this as much this week, because I’ve been finding myself in some difficulties with the game.  It’s a bit harder than the last Mario platformer I played, and the titular plumber seems to either be wearing slippery shoes or those platforms are a lot more slick than they look.  I tend to slide a lot, therefore sliding off into pits.  I also wish you could save whenever you wished instead of having to save after spending coins to open a locked door.  So while I don’t have much game time clocked, I do have critiques.  Never say reading my posts is futile 😉

Oh man things are getting to spicy for the pepper as our irrepressible let’s player heads towards the end.  A fatal decision was made (at the point in the game where a fatal decision had to be made), and this Shepherd chose *spoiler* Ashley *end spoiler* for the chopping block instead of *spoiler* Kaidan *end spoiler*.  To be honest I think I would’ve made the same decision, but I would’ve gone a different route in the romance.  Olizandri decided that his Shepherd was more career focused and less love inclined, but he did say he’d prefer someone with Wrex’s personality, and I wholeheartedly agree with that.  Personality-wise I think that would be a good match, though I can’t even remotely imagine (nor would I want to) how human-krogan carnal relations would work.  Ew.  I would romance Liara or possibly Tali (if she’s an option).  I like the way the latter says “Saren.”  It’s almost like she’s saying the “r” as a “d.”  It’s a sweet accent.

Whom would or did you pick in your Mass Effect romance?

Games Added to Play List: 5

  1. Final Fantasy IV – I just can’t get enough of this game, can I?  I added the PSP version to my list because for some God only knows reason, it wasn’t there.
  2. Drill Dozer – thanks to Matt for reviewing this on his blog Nintendo Bound!  I added the game after reading it and making (what I thought was) a witty quip about its similarities with Dig Dug.  Either way, you should check out the review and think about playing it yourself.
  3. The Legend of Dragoon – this is one of those times where I need to kick myself for forgetting who I was discussing this with.  It was a fellow blogger, and the conversation prompted me to add this.  I believe we were talking about the game in the number 4 slot and this came up alongside.  Ack, if you remember the conversation feel free to identify yourself in the comments.  I’m terrible at source information.
  4. Breath of Fire III – this game seems as illustrious and epic-worthy as my beloved Final Fantasies.  I have no issues playing RPGs outside of my favorite franchise, especially seeing as Grandia II is one of my favorite non-FF games.  I’d mention the Chrono Series, but since it’s also by Squeenix, it doesn’t really count as completely outside of FF.
  5. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night – none other than the Well-Red Mage encouraged this add.  Initially, I just had it on my To Watch list, but then I remembered I love platformers and RPGs, and this is the best of both worlds with the beautiful Alucard for bonus.

Games Bought This Week: 0

Erm, well it’s been about a week since I purchased World of Final Fantasy and no I haven’t played it yet.  I was even out sick today, but didn’t crack it open, probably on account of being sick/not feeling well.  Here’s hoping I get to play it tomorrow so I can make a report to you lovely bloggers next week.

For the third time Zeromus defeated me, but I believe my strategy is sound.  I just got too cocky and took a chance, which proved a fatal error.  Here were my stats for the battle:

Rydia – 65
Cecil – 69
Kain – 73
Edge – 63
Rosa – 63

Compared to last week:

Rydia – 64
Cecil – 68
Kain – 73
Edge – 62
Rosa – 62

I decided I was going to have Rydia cast Asura to help with the healing.

Asura by Amano

Asura by Amano

So the ladies would heal and the guys would fight.  This makes me a little grumpy, which I’ll talk about more when I review it.  Either way, I was doing pretty well so decided to have Rosa cast Holy, because Rydia had already healed the party with the summon.  Bad move.  That set off a disastrous chain reaction.  Once even one character goes down, it’s exceedingly hard to resurrect and heal them.  If Rosa is free, she can cast Life 2, which revives with full health, but if your other characters are weakening, you really can’t waste a turn doing that.  While other characters can use Life as an item, it brings you back with low HP, which is easily wiped out by Big Bang, and Zeromus loves casting that back to back.

I think if I’d just kept up with Asura and Cure 4, while allowing the guys to physically attack, I would’ve won the day.  I think I’m done with leveling (for now) and am going to implement my strategy this weekend.  Hopefully fourth time will be the charm!

The last big thing I watched was the fight with the Thorian on Feros and the treachery of the ExoGeni Corporation.  I was going to say video games sure love their evil corporations, but that’s not accurate at all.  Nearly ever medium uses that trope.  The Thorian has mind controlling and telepathic abilities, because I’ve certainly never heard of a narrative with an evil corporation using such a “ancient” being like that before *cough cough*  This is not remotely a critique.  I love when other narratives utilize the paradigms from my favorite well.  It is severely fucked up that the ExoGeni Corporation used the colonists as a control group to see what the Thorian would do to them.  I truly does appear that all power hungry corporations are the same.

I believe the dauntless LPer is in the midst of some side missions now.  I forget which planet, but he’s going after criminals and privateers as well as surveying the land for minerals aka money.  Watching him play, I’m a little sad that I’d really suck at this game in terms of combat.  I love the RPG aspect of it, but I can’t do the action parts.  This makes me sad for other reasons outside of ME 😦

I was listening to an awesome podcast by Cheap Boss Attack and Counter Attack Games (the latter whom I just started following today, too).  It was really chill.  Just two gamers talking about the things they love and eschewing the negativity that often seems to overly occupy the gaming sphere.  I feel a bit spoiled in finding this WordPress community, because while there are critiques (as there should be), it’s more constructive instead of bashing, and there’s much more emphasis in bolstering what’s beloved.

Anyway, these two games were mentioned, and I remembered I wanted to add them to my gaming backlog.  Firewatch just looked interesting, and the voice acting seems really solid.  Virginia makes me think of Dear Esther, though it seems to have some mixed reviews.

There was also some board game talk (and I myself was not bored *groan*) about one called Eldritch Horror.  Well, I’ve got some board game loving IRL friends whom I can probably talk into playing!  I’m a fan of Lovecraft’s work and the many things that have been inspired by it, and while I’m a wuss puss 365 days a year, it is Halloween season so some scares might be warranted.  It’s a little pricey, but that’s why I have an Amazon wishlist and a belief in Santa Claus :p

Ahhhh Alucard, so beautiful ♥♥♥

Yes, the son of Dracula is definitely one of my fangirl crushes.  I can feel your shock emanating through the interwebs.  The “Wow, the Shameful Narcissist is obsessed with another white haired pretty boy” faces are so clear in my mind.  At least this one has a good guy arc that I didn’t need to speculate/make up myself for fanfiction, speaking of which, I wish there were more for him.  I suppose I could watch the game and write some myself at some point.

*la swoon*

Symphony is also known for its amazing soundtrack (if it wasn’t, that would be painfully ironic given its name), so I’m not only adding it because of a beautiful vampire.  I’m not that shallow (yes I am), and it’s a definite perk.

It also bears mentioning that this game became a cult classic and is considered one of the best video games of all time.  It’s also another “spooky” offering for the season.  What’s more Halloween than Dracula and his inverse?

What are you currently playing and/or watching? Is it something new or old?  Is it a first time run or a replay?  What’s the genre?  Would you recommend it?  What’s on your radar to play next?

I look forward to your comments!
