I’m on the third stratum now.  I forget what it’s exactly called, but it’s an ice one to the fiery stratum before.  I got my ass handed to me by the Fire Demon boss of the second.  Well…not so much the boss as the Fire Cubes it summons.  If they explode, they take out your entire party.  I’m already on the second floor of the frozen stratum, and I love how each floor has it’s own gimmick with the FOEs (stronger enemies you can see/avoid).  The 11th had these Ambush Wolves that changed direction every third step and that was the only time you could see them.  Now the 12th has these dragons that sleep during the day but are awake and moving at night.  You’d think “Aha!  I’ll just explore the labyrinth during the day!” but there’s a mission where you have to collect these flowers that only bloom at night.  You can find their locations during the day and mark them, which is what I’m doing.  There are also slippery floor puzzles to map and figure out, so my plan is to explore/map the floor as well as find the flowers when it’s safe then pick them up at night once I know where they are.

What I Finished

Title: Broken Age
System: Nintendo Switch

Date Finished: 8/29/20

I loved this.  I gave it 4 stars out of 5 on Grouvee because some of the puzzles were a bit non-intuitive, but that could also be me.  I noticed I was much better at resolving them/thinking outside the box when I wasn’t tired.  Also the voice acting lineup, holy shit.  Elijah Wood did a voice!  I’m guessing he was Shay.  I’ve never heard of Vella’s voice actress Masasa Moyo, but she killed it.  Just checked and I was right about Shay.  There’s also the indomitable Jennifer Hale of Mass Effect and many other titles’ fame, and freaking Wil Wheaton!  What a lineup.  I’ll be talking more about Jennifer Hale below with WOFF.

What I Didn’t Finish

Title: Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
Series: Mario, Rabbids
System: Nintendo Switch

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle coverDate Started: May 14, 2018
Date DNF: June 26, 2018

There were definitely aspects of the  game I enjoyed.  I was pleasantly shocked at how well the Rabbids were incorporated into the Mario world.  They always came off as a bit annoying to me (like the Minions seem to most people), but this crossover worked surprisingly well.  Even the story that goes along with how it came about makes sense.  I wasn’t too fond of the battle system, which isn’t a slight on its part.  It’s just not for me.  It’s also possible I wasn’t doing it in the most efficient way, but c’est la vie?  I’m going to return the title to my coworker with thanks for lending it to me, and I think I’ll find a nice LP to watch since I am interested in where things go.

Title: Super Mario Odyssey

Genre: Platformer/Puzzle – Adventure
Developer: Nintendo
Release Date: October 27, 2017
Date Started: October 29, 2017
Date Finished: January 27, 2018

I mean…yeah, I finished it, but I’m not finished with it.  The answer to what the hell those grey boxes are has been answered, and the ending was cute if cliched.  Not just Mario game cliched, but annoying romance tropes cliched.  It’s okay though.  I love Bowser.  I need to collect like 30 more moons in the after game before I can do anything else, but I’m in a pretty cool location, and I’ll have more to say about this below…

What I Played

Nintendo 3DS

Title: Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth
Series: Etrian Odyssey
Genre: RPG/JRPG – Fantasy
Developer: Atlus
Release Date: August 4, 2016

I’m on the third stratum now, lovingly called the Fetid Necropolis.  As you can imagine there are a lot of undead enemies, including these Zombie Mutts with spinning heads that give you Confused Needles if you kill them while they’re panicked (otherwise known as confused).  There are also Skeleswords, which are more annoying than terrifying.  They follow you around unless they come across a patch of light where they disappear.  I’ve spent a lot of time beating them, because they give you Rusted Swords, which are useful for upgrading Fencer weapons.  They’re irritating though, because you’ll often find them in a line, and you can get mobbed by them.  EOV is the only turn-based games I’ve played where you can be attacked by another enemy while you’re in the midst of a fight.  I can usually clear out a floor fairly quickly, but I’ve been wandering around the 12th for a while now.  I should hopefully find the stairs up to the 13th soon and more enemies with conditional drops.

Story Based/Definitive Ending Games

On Hold
  1. Final Fantasy V – I’m going to wait until I clear out some of the games I’m in the midst of before picking this back up.  I’ll still count this time in my Playing Duration, but I’m not going to include it in this update until I pick up the sticks again.
  2. Assassin’s Creed: Origins – Same goes for this one.

Title: Super Mario Odyssey
Series: Super Mario
Genre: Platformer/Puzzle – Adventure
Developer: Nintendo
Release Date: October 27, 2017
Date Started: October 29, 2017

I was hoping to count this among my finished of 2017 (and if any list needed padding, it’s that one.  I’m pretty sure I’m the sandbagger among my blogger buddies hehe), but alas it was not to be.  I’m right at the end, too, in Bowser’s Kingdom, fighting the Broodals for (what I’m hoping is) the last time.  I made an attempt, but sadly failed.  I couldn’t figure out how to knock off the legs so that the final Broodal bubble is in the right spot for pecking (that…is a weird sentence).  Of course there’s a shit ton of after game, er, afterwards, so I’ll have to figure out how I’m going to count that when I get to it.
