What I Purchased

  • Calico – $11.99 @ Nintendo eShop
  • What Remains of Edith Finch – $5.99 @ Nintendo eShop
  • Final Fantasy IX – $10.49 @ Nintendo eShop

One of my friends reminded me about Calico on Facebook, and I immediately went to check it out/buy it.  The graphics are…a bit rough, and the controls are a little weird, but who gives a fuck YOU GET TO PET ALL THE ANIMALS.

I’ve seen What Remains of Edith Finch (it’s actually how I found about about The King in Yellow from a book on the grandmother’s shelf), but it was hard to turn down a copy for such a low price.  Plus I do like to both play and watch a game before I review it, and I’ve seen both it and some of the analyses of the same.  With those in mind, I want to go through it again.  Plus, it’s just an excellent game.

Snagging FFIX for the Switch has always been a planned move, and it was half off for year end so I just went with it.

Actually played some of this these past two weeks.  I got a chance to take on Harpuia, the 4th Stratum boss, and it wasn’t as bad as I thought.  Oh, I didn’t beat her or anything like that lol, but I’m seeing the beginnings of a strategy.  The biggest issue is the Glowbirds that come to her aid.  They’re 4th Stratum FOEs and they make things more complicated.  They have no elemental weakness, but they really only have one attack that they need a turn to charge up for.  If you don’t do something about it, the attack will hit all of your characters hard, but you can either throw a Blast Grenade to stop them or bind their heads if you can.  I’m wondering if I can just take them out before fighting the boss or if they’ll show up no matter what.  Either way, I think I want to level my characters up to level 50.  I watched a little bit of a video of someone taking her on, and that’s where they were.  I’m at level 49 so I don’t have that far to go, and I can fight Glowbirds or those rhino FOEs.  I might even take on those annoying frogs that follow you around lol.

I beat the game, but there’s a lot of after-game content to finish up.  They actually added even more with an extra dungeon in the Girl’s Tearoom, another one at the top of the Crystal Tower after you do all of the Tearoom dungeons, some weird void at the bottom of the fore mentioned tower, which leads to some major boss battle that requires six broken seals.

Yikes…I haven’t played this in the past two weeks again.  I need to watch a video of someone beating Harpuia so I have an idea of what I need to do.

I don’t think I’ve played this these past two weeks.  I’ve felt stymied because I know I need to do a lot of leveling.  I might just try the boss fight to see how badly it goes.  At least I’ll get an idea of what to expect.

I’m at the boss of the 4th stratum now and I need to do quite a bit of leveling before I take her on per the suggestions.  I want to try to take down one of the stratum’s FOEs especially since there’s an ingredient I can get from it.  It’s been a few day since I’ve played though.  I lose a little bit of steam if I don’t have a direct path forward, and really all I have to do is grind the FOEs on lower floors in order to level up.

What I Bought

  • Suberbeat: Xonic – $0.89 @ Nintendo eShop

What I Demoed

  • Cadence of Hyrule – Crypt of the Necrodancer featuring Legend of Zelda – I ultimately ended up passing on this game, but only because I suck at roguelike even if they are rhythm based lol.  I wound up watching an Olizandri play-through of it, though, and I was up late listening to the shopkeeper mix of the music.  I’ll talk more about that below and share the awesomeness.

Console Capers

I have become a collector of consoles, or rather of “wishful” collector of one.  In cleaning up my Amazon wish list, I removed all of the books in favor of consoles, video games, recording equipment, etc.  I obviously still have my book list on Goodreads, and I figured people know me well enough to realize that Amazon or Barnes and Noble gift cards are still amazing and noble presents indeed without the need for specific titles (I’m starting to reconsider this as I believe Amazon will send you offers/deals based on what you have on your wish list, but that’s neither here nor there).

As I conceived of this post before I received my PS3 in the mail yesterday (pictures to come on Tuesday’s State of the Gamer post), I’ll still mention it in my list, but will leave it off the poll.

I’d like to be wise in the vein of Hungry Goriya who is the queen of game collection and not just jump at the first console I find for some exorbitant price (for example, the Sega Master System on Amazon is at a whooping $700!), but rather be more savvy, shop around, drive a harder bargain, utilize eBay.  There’s also Jay Street Video Games, which is hilariously right next door to the GameStop.

Nintendo Switch

If I manage to find one of those, I should trade Cheap Boss Attack!

Regular Retail: $299.99
Amazon: $375 – $19,499.99
eBay: $384.00

Easily the newest system on my list and the “it” item of the year.  People will be fighting over Nintendo’s newest offering this Christmas and the next just like the Wii.  Nor did you read that Amazon high price wrong.  Someone is legitimately trying to gouge some poor sucker for $20k (WTF?).  eBay is way more reasonable, and even Amazon has some used units for under $300.  I’ll probably try to snatch one up from Best Buy or Target (if I can ever catch someone in the electronics aisle).

Games I Most Want to Play

  • Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • Super Bomberman R
  • Mario Odyssey

PlayStation 3

Regular Retail: $399.99
Amazon: $209.00

It makes sense that Nintendo and Sony would be the first systems on my list since they respectively allowed me to first play the game series I love the most: Final Fantasy, and the reason I was so hellbent on obtaining my own PS3 once again had to do with a Final Fantasy, too.

I think I’ve already talked about my adventures in PS3 buying, but if I haven’t, I’ll regale you with the story on Tuesday.  Suffice it to say, I now have one in my hot, little hand, and I couldn’t be happier about it.  Granted, I’ll feel better once I set it up and it actually works.  I believe PS3s are backwards compatible in respect to PlayStation games (but not PlayStation 2 ones), so I may be able to give my old PS2 a rest.

Games I Most Want to Play

  • Final Fantasy XIII
  • Mass Effect Trilogy
  • Suikoden I & II
  • Chrono Cross
  • Castlevania
  • Xenogears

From Suikoden to the end, all of these games are ones I downloaded from the PSN that I didn’t realize were PS3 only, so I’m pretty pumped.
