Final Fantasy Reviews

<–Final Fantasy IV Review                                                                      Final Fantasy VI Review–>

This is the part of a long-term project to play and review/analyze all the Final Fantasy games.  Whenever possible, I will play the original version, but in cases where it’s not available and/or there are time constraints, I’ll use a port and/or watch a Let’s Play, both of which contingencies will be indicated in the review.  Ideally, I will attempt to play a portion so that I can remark more accurately on the gameplay experience.  These will be long-form reviews with detailed plot analyses, so please be wary if you do not want spoilers.

I started my Final Fantasy journey in the 80’s with the legitimate sixth installment Final Fantasy VI, and though I did eventually go back to play Final Fantasy IV (which is now in my top 5 FF games), somehow or another I missed V.  While IV is known for being the first Final Fantasy to have a cohesive and intricate story, it had a static job system with only one character changing per the demands of the plot.  Final Fantasy V allows the player complete control over what jobs their characters have even more than Final Fantasy III, which required a certain amount of points to alter.  This was a huge advantage and helped distinguish FFV from its predecessors.

Pink rose covered in dewSome minor setbacks these past two weeks (I was tired), but I came to a decision about a particular conversation.  I wasn’t sure about it, but it led into some important territory and lines I liked so I decided to keep it.  It’s been a struggle to edit, because the specific topic is very close to current events let alone the entire story, but I’m going to keep trying.  This is also probably the most controversial chapter in the story, but IDGAF.

A lot of cuts these past two weeks.  I decided to move the nail polish thing to another chapter (…it’s amazing what writers deem important lol), because I think it would better serve in a place that’s not introspective and more active.  I’m in the process of doing the first edit, and it’s only been difficult because I’ve been so tired.  But I persevere.

I’m trying to figure out how to write about nail polish.  Not…that that’s that difficult; it’s more like I’m trying to figure out how I want her to talk about nail polish.  It’s why my word count has been going up.  I’ve been adding things in.  Not only to this chapter, but also prior ones (which reminds me…I need to reedit Chapter 8).  Once I have all the parts added it and organized, I can finally edit Chapter 11, which might entail more additions and organization.

Depending on what I move to what chapter, I may have to re-edit/revise said chapter; however, I’m finally back on track with Chapter 11.  That’s where I decided to go back and revise so I’m back where I started.  I was up quite late last night doing some work on it.  My biggest issue with this chapter is organization and where to add in extra notes, but that’s where color-coding comes in 😉

What I Didn’t Finish

Title: Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
Series: Mario, Rabbids
System: Nintendo Switch

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle coverDate Started: May 14, 2018
Date DNF: June 26, 2018

There were definitely aspects of the  game I enjoyed.  I was pleasantly shocked at how well the Rabbids were incorporated into the Mario world.  They always came off as a bit annoying to me (like the Minions seem to most people), but this crossover worked surprisingly well.  Even the story that goes along with how it came about makes sense.  I wasn’t too fond of the battle system, which isn’t a slight on its part.  It’s just not for me.  It’s also possible I wasn’t doing it in the most efficient way, but c’est la vie?  I’m going to return the title to my coworker with thanks for lending it to me, and I think I’ll find a nice LP to watch since I am interested in where things go.

What I Didn’t Finish

Title: Final Fantasy V
Series: Final Fantasy
System: PlayStation 3

Date Started: June 17, 2017
Date DNF: May 27, 2018

I called it quits after the Ancient Library.  The job system is just not working for me.  I like the characters and enjoy the story, but it started being a chore to play it.  I told myself if I could find a decent Let’s Play, I’d concurrently watch V while starting VI, and that’s just what I did.

What I Finished

Title: Thimbleweed Park
Developer: Terrible Toybox
System: Nintendo Switch
Genre: Point & Click/Puzzle – Mystery

Thimbleweed Park coverDate Started: February 25. 2018
Date Finished: April 23, 2018
Play Duration: 57 days

It only took me three months to finish my second game of 2018!  it was fun, witty, and extremely self-aware.  Like self-aware to the point that it was an integral plot device.  My favorite character is definitely Delores, though I do love Agent Ray’s snark.  Delores is completely genuine and nice, as well as a game programmer.

Story Based/Definitive Ending Games

On Hold
  1. Final Fantasy V – I’m going to wait until I clear out some of the games I’m in the midst of before picking this back up.  I’ll still count this time in my Playing Duration, but I’m not going to include it in this update until I pick up the sticks again.
  2. Assassin’s Creed: Origins – Same goes for this one.

Title: Super Mario Odyssey
Series: Super Mario
Genre: Platformer/Puzzle – Adventure
Developer: Nintendo
Release Date: October 27, 2017
Date Started: October 29, 2017

I was hoping to count this among my finished of 2017 (and if any list needed padding, it’s that one.  I’m pretty sure I’m the sandbagger among my blogger buddies hehe), but alas it was not to be.  I’m right at the end, too, in Bowser’s Kingdom, fighting the Broodals for (what I’m hoping is) the last time.  I made an attempt, but sadly failed.  I couldn’t figure out how to knock off the legs so that the final Broodal bubble is in the right spot for pecking (that…is a weird sentence).  Of course there’s a shit ton of after game, er, afterwards, so I’ll have to figure out how I’m going to count that when I get to it.
