Later Levels QOTM: October 2018

I’ve been following Later Levels for quite some time now, but I’ve never participated in their Question of the Month challenge usually because I couldn’t think of a good answer.  That changed with this month’s spooky query to go along with the Halloween season!

The question set for us by Megan is: In honour of Halloween, tell me what video game scared you the most. What is it about the elements, environments, music, or characters in the video game that scared you?

Without a doubt SOMA.

SOMA coverThis game messed me up for months after, and I didn’t even play it myself; I watched an LP.  While it has the customary jump scares of most first person survivals, that’s not were the horror lies.  It’s far more existential in nature, and it’s not until you reach the end that the full impact of it hits you like a truck.

It’s set 100 years in the future at the bottom of the ocean in a derelict, undersea research facility.  The world has suffered a catastrophic event where everyone on the surface is presumed to be dead, but in some cases death is far better than the alternative.  The atmosphere of the game does wonders for projected an unnerving and unsettling air as you guide the protagonist Simon through a facility as strange to him as it is to you.

That right there is where I believe the linchpin lies.  Simon is just a regular person just like anyone playing the game, and what happened to him could happen to any of us.  He’s not a space marine, super soldier, scientist, or warrior.  He’s just a regular guy from Toronto with horrible luck.  He didn’t ask to be in that situation, and though it’s utterly outlandish, it’s still not out of the realm of possibility given where technology might go.

Where the story ends is literally gutting and you sit there for minutes after the credits roll and the after credit scene has played as the horrifying realization washes over you.  You remember you were explicitly warned about it around the midpoint of the game just like Simon was, and a terrible decision you need to make as him suddenly takes on a deeper meaning.  Yet it’s not until the end that you understand the implications.  It’s an experience I’m never going to forget and that I’m still working on reviewing.

So that’s my scariest game!  Check out Later Level’s post linked above if you want to get in on the spooky action 🙂

Final Fantasy Friday: The Creepiest

Final Fantasy Friday

We all know what time of the year it is, and as a bonus we get a Friday the 13th in October to make the spookiest season even spookier.

Now, I know this is the second weekend of October.  I never claimed to have a good sense of time, but for the rest of the month, I’ll gear my questions more towards the eerie and off settling aspects of my favorite franchise.  With that in mind…

What is the scariest monster/enemy?

Final Fantasy boasts quite a few creepy creatures in its extensive history.  There’s the Final Fantasy VIII’s Fake President (…I want to say something so badly) after he reveals his true form.

Also known as Gerogero, which I’m not even sure how to pronounce

<–Question of the Week: 11/20/16          Question of the Week: 12/4/16–>

The Question of the Week is posted every Sunday and will consist of a question followed by my answer and explanation to the same.  Some questions will only require a simple answer that could potentially be followed by an explanation.  Many questions will be writer oriented, but not all.  Everyone is encouraged to answer in the comments and discussions/follow up questions are more than welcome!

What’s your favorite holiday?

The brunt of them are coming up (or have recently passed) so I feel the timing of this question is appropriate.  I also feel the answer to this is difficult.  I am torn between Halloween and Christmas.  I love Halloween because it makes my dark, little Goth heart happy, also be what you want, bitches!  Plus, it’s the one holiday that doesn’t require you to deal with wayward family, and eating candy and drinking too much are like a requirement.

But Christmas…ah Christmas has the memories.  I even love the music.  So much sehnsucht.  So I guess I have to call it a tie between Christmas and Halloween.

What paranormal experience(s) have you had?

When I was around eight or nine years old getting ready for school, I was in the bathroom looking at the mirror that was in front of our medicine cabinet, and as I looked I realized I wasn’t seeing myself.  I know…so cliched, but it was very weird.  This girl had lighter skin than me, more honey colored, and different features, yet she mimicked my movements as images are wont to do.  I remembered going back and forth out of the mirror and coming back to find the same reflection still before.  Then my mom called me, and I again looked away from the mirror to answer, but when I went back, the “honey girl,” was gone, and it was just me in the glass.

I wasn’t even frightened at the time.  I just thought it was weird or a trick of the light.  Even now I’m not sure if I was actually seeing what I was seeing, but the house I grew up in was…weird.  Looking back on it with adult eyes, it was always odd how frightened I was of the dining room and my fear of basements and subterranean spaces came about because my basement was super creepy. I always hated going down there and have nightmares about it to this day.  There was this discoloration on the wall that looked like an alien monster.  I know it was from the moisture of the hot water heater, but it was always unsettling.

I’ve had more random experiences where I’ve just had weird feelings.  live in a part of Pennsylvania that’s considered quite haunted, and I’ve been to Valley Forge Park at night.  Terrifying.  There are also these terrible tunnels that I refuse to drive through in the dark not to mention this graveyard near my college that friends have concurred with me on on the spookiness factor.  Then of course I have cats, and they’re always seeing the unseen hehe.

I don’t profess to being anything I’m not, and I take the scientific, rational, and logical side in most things, but I can’t deny I’ve had inexpiable feelings and seen some strange things.  It could just be I didn’t have the tools or means to explain them or it could be they defy our ability to explain them yet.

What’s your favorite Halloween/Halloween type movie?

sweeney-todd

I count this as a “Halloween type” movie.  It’s got that gothic/macabre aesthetic that fits in with this time of the year.  It’s also arguably my favorite horror movie; it’s definitely my favorite horror musical.  Don’t get me wrong, I’d definitely see the musical version of Evil Dead, but I’m more of a fan of gothic horror, no hate though!

Honorable mentions so Hocus Pocus, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and The Crow.

Side note:  I’m currently munching on those mellowcreme pumpkins I was raving about a week ago.  Halloween is amazing.

Halloween Fun Time

This is a little questionnaire I borrowed (stole hehe) from my girl Cupcakes and Machetes.  Tis the season right?  I’ll copy her (again) and post the questions without answers for easier acquisition.  Please feel free to borrow/steal this for your own enjoyment!

  1. What scent sets the holiday mood?
  2. Favorite Halloween Fun Size Candy Bar?
  3. Favorite Halloween movie?
  4. Favorite seasonal sweet?
  5. What toppings are on the perfect candy apple?
  6. What’s your favorite costume you ever wore on Halloween?
  7. Most enjoyable fall tradition?
  8. Pumpkin Patch Hayride or Haunted Hayride?
  9. What song is a must for a Halloween Party Playlist?
  10. Favorite Halloween Monster: Dracula, Frankenstein, etc.?
  11. Cider or Cocoa?
  12. Scary movies or Scaredy cat?
  13. Pumpkin Spice: Yum, or Yuck?
  14. Which is scariest: Spiders, Zombies, or Clowns?
  15. Best find in your Trick or Treat bag?
  16. Worst thing to get in your Trick or Treat bag?

1. What scent sets the holiday mood?

Apple spice hands down is October/fall for me.

2.  Favorite Halloween Fun Size Candy Bar?

Milky way.  Mmmmm so good.  I could eat like 50 of them, which utterly negates the fun size.

milk-way-fun-size-126017-im

3.  Favorite Halloween Movie?

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.  That’s if we’re talking the type of movies you watch around Halloween time.  If so, yes, this is my favorite horror musical.

4.  Favorite seasonal sweet?

I think I covered this in my last Question of the Week!  Mellowcreme pumpkins.  Mmm I can hear my teeth screaming now.

Yes, these guys

5.  What toppings are on the perfect candy apple?

I’m perfectly fine with just caramel.  I can’t think of anything else I would need.

caramel-apple

6.  What’s your favorite Halloween costume?

I have to go with my staple of dark angel.  It’s my fallback if I’m ever in a pinch, and I always have clothes for it available, because I’m a not-so-secret goth.

halloween-2014-dark-angel

7.  Most enjoyable fall tradition?

Planning and dressing up for Halloween.  I love that it’s a holiday you can celebrate regardless of your religion or lack thereof (even though it is based around Samhain).  You’re not obligated to deal with potentially bigoted relatives.  You get to eat candy and drink with your friends all the while dressing up as whatever the hell you want.  Like seriously, what is the downside and why isn’t this a month long event/celebration?

8.  Pumpkin Patch Hayride or Haunted Hayride?

Pumpkin patch.  I have no desire to have the stuffing scared out of me (wuss puss over here), and I love pumpkin picking.

pumpkins

9.  What song is a must for a Halloween Party Playlist?

Thriller is a nonnegotiable.

10.  Favorite Halloween Monster?

I’d probably have to go with Dracula for this one since vampires are pretty high on my list.  Wasn’t I just talking about a hot vampire?

11.  Cider or Cocoa?

Cider all the way.  Not that I don’t like cocoa, but apple spice was my first answer.

apple-cider

12.  Scary movies or Scaredy cat?

Like I said, I’m a big old wuss puss, though of course I can’t make sense and am obsessed with all things Lovecraftian and eldritch.

scaredy-cat

13.  Pumpkin spice: Yum or yuck?

Yum.  I like apple spice better, but I don’t understand the hatred towards pumpkin spice.  It’s a decent flavor and clearly keeps Starbucks in business.

14.  Which is scariest: spiders, zombies, or clowns?

Well clowns seem to be competing for the scariest things out there.  Like wtf is going on with that?  But I’d have to say zombies because the shambling undead just rips through layers of horror all the way down to the uncanny valley.  They can also make you one of them!  Neither of the others one do that…unless it’s a radioactive spider and then you turn into Spider-Man.  Omg…imagine a zombie clown that was bitten by a radioactive spider D:

15.  Best find in your Trick or Treat Bag?

A whole Milky Way candy bar.  None of this fun sized shit :p

milky-way

16.  Worst thing to get in your Trick or Treat Bag?

Dental floss or a pamphlet about how fat kids shouldn’t get candy.  One, I can buy my own dental floss and two, wtf is wrong with you?

Have fun!

What’s your favorite type of Halloween candy?

This might get me some raised eyebrows as many consider these to be in the same vein as candy corn (which gets so much hate and is a candy I like, as well), but my favorite Halloween treat is those mellowcreme pumpkins.

Yes, these guys

Yes, these guys

I love these things even though they’re sweet enough to melt your teeth, but they’re also dangerous because once I open a bag, it tends to disappear.  Thankfully, they only show up from mid-September to Halloween, disappearing until next year.  My sweet tooth can only take so much.

What’s your favorite Halloween candy?  If you’re not really a candy person, what’s your favorite Halloween food or drink?

I look forward to your answers in the comments!

What are you planning for your Halloween costume?

Yes, it’s finally that time of year again.  The god awful summer heat has broken, the days are growing shorter as the night encroaches upon the afternoon.  It’s wet and rainy in my corner of the world, but I’d take this any day over oppressive humidity, and it’s time to plan my Halloween costume!

I’m probably going to do a long neglected Cosplay Confessional post to flesh out the details of this (and to also discuss the alternative option).

After I saw Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens and loved it hard, I thought about how freaking easy it would be for me to be Finn.

finn

I actually have really short hair.  *shock*  I know that silver hair is totally not mine lol.  All I really need is the jacket…which I just bought yesterday.  This is a marked difference from my Halloween costume last year, which was super elaborate and a wee bit expensive.

My alternate costume was Smokey Quartz, the newest fusion from Steven Universe.

But I’d need to find a gigantic yo-yo, buy a new wig, plus I don’t have three arms.  Granted, I’d just scrap the latter, but it would rankle me, because I’m a perfectionist.  I saw an amazing cosplay of this a few weeks ago, but I can’t find it.  Annoying.

What are you planning to be for Halloween?  Is it the typical “spooky” fare (e.g. witch, ghost, vampire, etc.) or is it a character/cosplay?

I look forward to your answers in the comments!

Cosplay Confessional – The Halloween Update

I did not go through a time tunnel (though bringing up time travel makes me sad since Doctor Who is no longer on Netflix); it just took me this long to post the update.  This post is a continuation and fruition of Cosplay Confessional – The Halloween Edition, where I decided I would be Rarity Unicorn from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

This lovely lady, er, pony.

You’ll find links in the original post for all of the accoutrements I needed.  This post is more about the finished result.

Let me just say that 2015 was far, far better than 2014.  I actually succeeded in pulling of this costume or at least being able to fit into it.  It was also sort of a group costume effort with two of my married friends being ponies, too.  My friend Heather was Rainbow Dash and convinced her husband Tommy to go as Fluttershy (a pony I considered myself, but then rejected because yellow wings would be too complicated).

This…

…and this respectively.

I’ll first show some of my preliminary photos before the costume was entirely put together and talk about the process.  Since it’s been several months, I’ll try to remember exactly what I was doing, but I don’t trust my memory, and you certainly shouldn’t either.  I also apologize for the fuzziness of the photos.  I believe my phone was being held together with duct tape and prayer at the time, and that obscured the camera lens.

Cosplay Confessional – The Halloween Edition

Hello, hello dearest people!

I decided to do an update on my WIP Halloween costume.  As stated in my prior Cosplay Confession, I will being doing Rarity from My Little Pony this year.

The fancy lady er pony er pony lady

I was able to find a suitable dress at Torrid.com though there was a bit of trepidation since there were no returns and no exchanges offered since it was a clearance item.  I oscillated between one size and the other and finally decided on the one that aligned closest with my bust and waist even though it was only a 1x.  I…can’t even get started on how ridiculous women’s sizes are.  Even with such measurements, there’s no guarantee that clothing will fit, but I took a leap of faith, bought the smaller one and hoped for the best.

White DressMy wonderful coworker lent/gave me a purple ribbon, and while I love the color and think it looks cute, it’s not long enough to tie in a bow, and I kind of want a bow.
