Day 14:  Current (or most recent) gaming wallpaper.

Oh boy did you ask the magic question.  All of my wallpaper (except for work) is gaming related, and I always make sure I have a different wallpaper for every device lol.  Guess what game it relates to?

This is my laptop’s current background:

and this is the picture on my phone:

What are some of your gaming backgrounds?  I realize this might be a difficult question to answer since WP doesn’t support visual comments, but you could post a link there, or I can see it if you do the video game challenge yourself!

Stranger Things – Not Really a Review

This is less a review and more of what I hope will become an open discussion.  I had absolutely no idea that going into Stranger Things, I’d come out with so many other narratives on my mind, but it was not only chock full of 80s aesthetic without being the least bit campy, but it also reminded me of many other stores of not just that decade but others prior and since.

Stranger Things Cover

While this is not a review, it will still spoil the entirety of the first season, as I’ll be discussing all aspects of the show in regards to other stories, and the discussion will spoil those narratives as well.

All of the doors are about to be opened Dustin, don’t worry!  Also, I love Gaten Matarazzo.

***Spoilers for Stranger Things and every single narrative in bold.***

Stand by Me – We’ll get this one and The Goonies out of the way since Stranger Things was heralded as being reminiscent of the adaptation of Stephen King’s novel The Body and that classic 80s treasure hunt/coming of age tale, though ST was quite a bit darker and more horrifying than them both.  Also, oddly enough, in looking up the Wikipedia links for both movies, I discovered they both take place in small towns in Oregon.

E.T. There’s a picture of all of the kids on their bikes with Eleven in a hoodie with the hood up.  I can’t find it right now, but I recall the scene from one of the latter episodes.  If I knew exactly where it was (and I wasn’t being lazy), I’d screenshot it from my Netflix app, though…maybe it’s better I don’t since I don’t want to get in trouble.  Anyway, that was a definite visual reference to E.T., but just the idea of government officials hunting down a special entity set in the 80s, and the children the entity befriended trying to keep them safe has E.T. all over it.  Now El’s not an alien…or so it might seem, but the Demogorgon certainly is.  We’ll talk more about aliens and special children’s connections to them in a later entry.

It Stays With You

More macros are available here for the interested.

One of my pipe dream wishes for the FFVII Remake (which I’m sadly full of ennui about.  Perhaps I’ll make a post about why in the near future) is for a scene like the below to occur.  I know it never will, that’s why it’s a pipe dream, fodder only for fanfiction and art, but if it did indeed happen, rest assured, I’d never stop sobbing.

00 Regret Stays With You

She is clearly the one saying it to him not cruelly, but rather as an affirmation of grief.  You have to face it and accept it before there’s any chance the wounds can heal (which was the point of the latest episode of Steven Universe that I just watched prior to drafting this), though in the case above, there’d be no true healing, but she’d help him bear the scars 😦

Once again Deviant Artist Dark6Nika provides the original picture entitled “A prayer to mother,” and I recently used the same as basis and impetus for the latest post on my Sephiroth fanpage.

FullSizeRender (4)

The macro’s words (the post above is what I myself dredged up) are from The Name of the Wind by one of my favorite authors Patrick Rothfuss, whose works I’ve reviewed here and here.

A brief note about quotes.  I don’t always put the source on the picture as I often think it disturbs the aesthetic.  This is usually the case where the image contains people.  I double checked to ensure I wasn’t just doing this with words not my own, and I wasn’t.  There are several macros with quotes from Northern Lights that I didn’t source on the macro itself.  Because of this, if the macro is shared, I hope that the entirety of the post is as well.  Not so much to give me credit since I neither rendered the image nor wrote the quote (in some cases), but rather to give credit to the original creators.  I merely put two things together, interlocking pieces that I hope others can see well fit.

Question of the Week: 5/15/16

<–Question of the Week: 5/8/16          Question of the Week: 5/22/16–>

The Question of the Week is posted every Sunday and will consist of a question followed by my answer and explanation to the same.  Some questions will only require a simple answer that could potentially be followed by an explanation.  Many questions will be writer oriented, but not all.  Everyone is encouraged to answer in the comments and discussions/follow up questions are more than welcome!

What are your computer/device backgrounds?

This question may require you to make a post of your own in answer.  I sincerely hope you do unless you wish to utilize your powers of description in the comments.  This is also of course entirely optional.

I have many backgrounds as I refuse to use the same one for different devices.

Laptop

This is one of those pictures that will make me tear up if I look at it for too long.  If you know the characters/story, you know that she’s his real mother, and he not only never sees her, he also isn’t even granted the knowledge of her name.  He doesn’t know that’s his mother, and that remains a pillar in the game’s mien of tragedy.

Phone Lock Screen

I’ve had this as my phone background for nearly a year.  I instantly followed Archaedia Studios on Deviant Art and other sites.  I cannot ignore artist(s) so talented.

Phone Home Screen

Potential Northern Lights CoverI used this as the cover for Northern Lights on Fanfiction.net for a time, and it’s the picture for the printout copy (yes, I made one of those.  I gave it to the only “real life” friend who read it).  I had it as the background for my work computer for a time, but that is currently…

Work Desktop

Chapter 7 - A Calm and Private PlaceBecause this is also the picture for NL Chapter 7, and because I listened to the soundtrack to La Luna extensively while editing it, that music always flows through my head whenever I see this picture.

The blue is very calming, and while my work isn’t super stressful, I do find myself often gazing at the background with my head tilted slightly to the side.

So my backgrounds consist of Sephiroth and sky phenomena.  This is no great surprise.

What are the backgrounds for your devices?  Are they personal pictures, art of any type, or something else?

I look forward to your answers in the comments!

All We Are

FFVII is a story filled with what ifs.  I’ve been thinking more about this lately since I’ve been reading an ASOIAF analysis blog that examines the what ifs of that narrative in every chapter.  For VII, while there may not be quite as many, the ones that are there are just as profound.

Sephiroth has many, many what ifs around him.  What if Lucrecia hadn’t left?  What if she had stayed or at the very least waited until he was old enough to understand that she was his mother before leaving?  What if she had taken him with her?  What if he’d been told the full truth of his origins?   What if he had the full truth of his origins prior to that traumatic discovery of Jenova?  What if his father wasn’t a dickhead aka hadn’t treated him like a specimen/experiment? What if he had retired/resigned before that fateful last mission to Nibelheim?  What if Gast hadn’t been killed?  I could write a myriad essays on these questions alone.

What if he had been given the below words?

All We Are

I have to thank Deviant Artist Dark6Nika again for her gorgeous rendering (which I have used before) whose title is Dear Son.

The words are from Northern Lights, my FFVII fanfiction.  Though they are spoken by Sephiroth and not Lucrecia, I feel they carry a true mother’s resonance.

Pay My Respects

I had some time tonight for macros and I’m more than happy with how this one turned out.  I believe the picture is from Dirge of Cerberus, but don’t quote me on that as I’ve never played it.  Either way it’s haunting, beautiful, and the filter I used was so chosen because it reminds me of the remembrance photos on funeral programs.

Pay My RespectsThe words are from my Northern Lights’ Chapter 14 Forget Me Not.

The picture is starting to get to me, so I shall end it here.

Cursed Forever

I kept thinking silly things to keep myself above this despair.  Mother motifs always get to me for fairly obvious reasons, and Sephiroth’s tragic story has a great deal of the Mordred mythos in it.  It would have to, else Heather Dale’s lullaby to the same would not be so eerily accurate.

Cursed Forever

If you cannot feel her pain, check your heart.

The original picture is by Deviant Artist Dark6Nika and is entitled ::I never wanted to lose you.  She is also on tumblr and actually likes my manipulations of her work!!  Very exciting and humbling.

The words are from George R R Martin’s A Dance With Dragons spoken by Gilly *spoiler* who would know a thing or two about abandoned sons 😦 *end spoiler*

Never let me weep…

The Sum of Our Grief

I was happy.  Let me back up.  I’d rebuilt my wall after a week full of despondency.  I fall into those very easily like a bleeding crack in the skin of the world.  Being a writer of dark fantasy/paranormal romance where my characters are far too often faced with insurmountable despair, I try to keep a thin layer of it available at all times to dip into like a paint pot in order to detail a scene, but sometimes it overflows.  If I’m too stressed out or too anxious, the ends can’t hold and down I plunge.  It took the better part of last week to dig myself out of it so that I could do any kind of writing at all.  I have to have some kind of confidence about myself in order to create anything.  I couldn’t write; I couldn’t blog; I couldn’t do very much except go to work, go to my jazzercise (dance aerobics) class, and sleep.  By Thursday, after a conversation with a good friend who suffers similarly, I felt better.  Usually, all I need is someone to understand and to validate what I’m feeling.  There’s…too much to go into with this, but suffice it to say that I have numerous issues that I’m working on.

A Mother’s Love

The main reason I’m posting this right now is because I need to talk about it in my fourth Cosplay Confessional post, but I don’t want to talk about it without posting it.  This has been a day of mommy feels for multiple reasons, and that reminded me that I’d made this macro a few days ago, but hadn’t posted it yet on tumblr.  Because the artist’s name was on the original picture, I knew I’d be able to find them, and lo and behold, I did…I also found more of their work, and that work was rife with mommy feels.  I’ll talk more about that in the CC post, but for now, the macro.

Sephiroth and Lucrecia - A Mother's LoveI was putting up links to my tumblr because the picture is small, and the words blur if I try to enlarge it, but then I realized I’m a dumb ass, and you can just click the picture for a full view.

If you choose not to the words are:

“Even in your pride I never blamed you.  A mother’s love is a sacrifice…”

They are from Nightwish’s Two for Tragedy.  Honestly…the entire song itself could be about them, but Nightwish has always had a weird alignment with Final Fantasy, but…that’s a topic for another blog post.

The creator of the original is Deviant Artist Dark6Nika, and the source is located here.

I also used this picture in my Sephiroth and Lucrecia video for Candle on the Water..

One day I’ll have to tell you all about my idea of the “Broken Vase,” which is how I deal with an over abundance of mommy feels.  There’s a picture by the same artist that nearly made me lose it today, but again I’ll talk about that in the cosplay post.  Hell…I should just post the video I made about the “vase,” but that takes some jumping through hoops.

Until then (or later), I hope you enjoy.

Candle on the Water – FFVII: Sephiroth and Lucrecia

My second video came together much quicker than my first though I did run into the same problem with the credits, but I also garnered more insight.  I thought the credits were based on line count, but they’re based on time.  You can get around 100 seconds in before you start seeing the vertical lines.

This one is about Sephiroth and Lucrecia, the true mother never known, and the entire reason I wrote Northern Lights. This ignorance is also the catalyst in my defense of him.  I can’t lie and say this video wasn’t tough to make at some points, nor can I claim not to have cried a little.  It’s heart-wrenching for an empathetic person like me, but like everything I put any effort into, I felt it had to be accomplished.

I’m not sure what my next one will be.  I have Sarah McLachlan’s Angel in mind, but there’s also the classic O Danny Boy that I mention in Chapter 25 (don’t click if you haven’t read the preceding 24 chapters!), or Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, which would be for Aeris alone.  So I suppose my next video endeavor will be a surprise.  It appears you can do AMVs with WMM, but I may wait until I obtain Sony Vegas, which is far superior software.
