Final Fantasy Friday: Final…Legends???

Final Fantasy Friday

Though there is far more rivalry among the games within the series themselves, I’ve still come across a few people who decide to cast shade upon Final Fantasy or Legend of Zelda depending on which one they prefer.  I, personally, find this quite ridiculous in the same way I find someone like me judging an FPS game to be a poor play.  Each series brings different things to the table in terms of game technicalities, and they both tell epic tales.  Zelda is pure fantasy, while Final Fantasy (a bit ironically) has elements of sci-fi in it and could be better considered science fantasy.

This week’s question shows another periodic departure from my normal fare.  I’ve done it before here, and I shall do it again in the future, not because I’ve run out of Final Fantasy questions, but rather because it is possible for two (or *shock* more) epic game series to coexist.

What this in mind…

Who is your favorite Legend of Zelda character?

This topic came up in the comments of my Cecil Harvey assessment last week.  I’m…pretty sure I’ve either posted about this here, because I’m getting a picture in my mind (because it’s already in my picture library), but Midna is my favorite character and the best princess (yup I said it.  Let’s fight!).

Day 27: Most epic scene ever.

I’m sorry.  You know I have to mention one of the most iconic scenes in video game history:

It’s epic for the fact that like Aeris, none of us saw that coming (I’m a terrible person), and the fact that to this day, the rumor mill spins with ways to bring her back and hopes that the Remake will allow it (I really hope it doesn’t).

I was also blown away by Midna’s reveal at the end of Twilight Princess:

I was as dumbstruck as Link.  Though he’s ever the silent protagonist, I think his inability to speak was due to finding the Twilight Princess was even more beautiful than Princess Zelda (imho).  This one is more on my personal epic scale; though I’m sure many of you would agree with me about it, I don’t know if it will wind up in the annals of video game history like FFVII will.

Epic is a subjective term, though there is a cultural consciousness about it.  What one person might consider epic, another might think is mundane, while some things foster a general agreement   The original definition of epic pertains to a long, poetic composition usually centered upon a hero in which a series of great achievements or events is narrated in elevated style.  Going by this both Final Fantasy and Legend of Zelda could be considered epics in their own right, because what are these games but long compositions centered upon heroes where a series of great achievements/events are stylistically played out?  This definition extends to all manner of video games, so even though epic is a specific idea, what one considers epic can be both ubiquitous and intensely personal.

What video game scene wakes your epic sensors?  Do you go by the standard definition of the term or your gut emotion in this determination?

Game with the best cut scenes.

You all know I have to say Final Fantasy VII, though it’s obviously not the only game with great cut scenes.  I’m not going to post the most famous cut scene in the land since the Remake is coming out…eventually, and amazingly, that scene is now spoiler territory again for those who didn’t play the first time around, but it occurred 20 years ago, and is still counted amongst the best and most shocking scenes in video game history.

All of the Final Fantasies have amazing cut scenes to be honest, ever since they started them in FFVII and even the ones added to older FFs are stellar.  I’m particularly fond of the opening to Final Fantasy IV.

And this one for FFVI always gives me chills.

For non-Final Fantasy there are too many in Mass Effect to count, especially Mass Effect 2.  I’m trying to remember what the name of the green skinned asari was, but she had a thing for Shepherd, and the look on her face when she made a bit of a pass at her was heartbreaking and beautiful.

Then of course there’s the cut scene in Twilight Princess when the eponymous Midna’s true form is revealed.

I was just as speechless as Link.

What’s your favorite cut scene?  Let me know in the comments, and yes, I accept links 😉
