The State of the Writer: 3/12/17

<–The State of the Writer: 3/5/17          The State of the Writer: 3/19/17–>

A weekly post updated every Sunday discussing my current writing projects and where I stand with them.  This will include any and all work(s) in progress (WIP) be they creative writing, essays/analyses, or reviews of any type.

Project: Story
The Broken Rose
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Type: Fanfiction (FFVII) Novel
Current Word Count: 270, 123
Prior Word Count: 270,271
Word Difference: -148
Status: Editing
Progress: 3rd edit of Chapter 8

The picture doesn’t really have anything to do with the chapter (besides being Sephiroth), I just absolutely adore it.  I found it last week on DeviantArt, and it was a fantastic RP prompt for my Sephiroth and Aeris fanpage (yes, I’m that big of a dork).  The artist rendered his half/crooked smile/smirk perfectly, and it’s exactly what I picture when I write lines like:

“Long lashes fluttered above a crooked smile that nonetheless held all his joy.”

Also, little known fact, the Shameful Narcissist has a similar smirk.  I can smile fully with both edges of my lips turning up, but in general, only the left side tends to do so.  It’s weird, too, because I’ve tried to emulate the expression on my right side, and it just does not happen.

Seph pretty much proves that you can have a “crooked” smile and still be the paragon of beauty.  I mean I always knew this because obviously I smile like that, too (narcissism alert), but having someone like the Great General do so, too, utterly seals the beauty deal.

Speaking of which, if you look closely, you’ll see BethanyAnnie (whose other work you should definitely check out) also gave him long eyelashes (and slit pupils), which I consider integral to any Sephiroth rendering, because they’re ridiculously luxurious, dammit!  This is a mini-rant, but it kind of grinds my gears when people don’t include or at least give an inkling to his long eyelashes, and while I’m not irked that none of the cosplayers I’ve seen have taken that into account, it’s definitely something I’ve noticed and intend to remedy in when I finally put everything for that together.  It’s the main reason I bought the Sephiroth bag I found while scrolling on tumblr one day.  I swear to god, there’s just no place to hide from anything, if you’re trying not spend money.

Bonus: Cid being Cid and a shot of my fandom/bookshelf

I like that he looks a bit mischievous (in BethanyAnnie’s picture), but not malevolent either.  I love this picture so freaking hard ♥♥♥

Anyway…to editing.  I feel like I didn’t accomplish much this week, but I apparently finished the second edit because I’m on the third.  I haven’t had much time to delve into it.  I think I’ve only edited twice this week, but I’m about halfway through the (greatly shortened) chapter and should be finished by the weekend if I can eke out the time.  I think third time is going to be the charm.

Quote: The general gazed down at this innocent rose. *A tiny white flower will be waiting for me within Heaven’s Gate.*  She clutched at his hand and Sephiroth folded both of hers within his one.  *When I return, she’ll run to my arms.*  For moments, he could only stare.  Witnessing the future happen before as if it had already come.  The miracle occurred within Mako eyes where slivers bisected bright emerald.  She could dwell in their centers, but never be cut, and her sigh of joy filled his dark heart.  In swift afterthought, he retrieved a great coat, one that was velvet lined.  Just in case the maid fell asleep and wished to remember his warmth.

Project: Story
Working Title:
The High Lord
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Type: Original Novel
Status: Planning for NaNoWriMo

Nothing else is happening in terms of physical writing this week.  Encouraged by ignitedmoth’s “Necro Rhino” (her creative name for NaNoWriMo) adventures (I kind of prefer it and hope she’s okay with me using the term!), I’m planning on participating in it again this year, but I’m actually going to try to fulfill the stipulations of the “contest:” writing 50k words of new novel in a month.

Now, I told myself the next thing I wrote, I’d go back to hand writing it first, because though I had very enriching experiences writing Northern Lights and The Broken Rose, I did them both entirely in Word, and I really missed the hand written experience.  I feel like I would’ve been far less neurotic and paranoid if I’d had a physical copy of both, so I’m going to return to that method going forward.  I do appreciate the experience that writing these fanfiction novels in such a way taught me, and I still consider Northern Lights my best piece of writing to date, but I’m much more comfortable in front of a blank notebook than I am in front of a blank document.  I’ll just count the words per page lol.  1667 a day will be my goal, so I’m thankful I have seven months to prepare.

I need to do a lot of research and organize my notes.  I’ll probably save the latter for October, so that the details of the story are fresh in my mind.  Alas, I won’t be able to talk too much about it since this is something I want to submit for traditional publication, but I’ll at least reveal more details about the work as it gets closer to go time.  It’s another “inspired by FFVII/Aeriseph” story (shock) and uses the same characters from my first original novel, The Serpent’s Tale.  I’m excited to work on it later this year and have already decided I’ll put the editing of TBR on hiatus (if I’m still doing it) if such needs to be.  Until then, I’ll continue editing as much as I can, especially considering The Broken Rose is the “test story” for The High Lord.

What are you currently working on?  Is it a creative writing project, essay, review, or something else?  Have you just started something new or are you wrapping up a long term project?

NaNoWriMo 2015 Daily Word Count: 11/30/15

On the last day of NaNoWriMo I suppose I should give some kind of summary/wrap of my experience this month.  It…really wasn’t that much different from my typical writing experiences though.  Since I have a story to work on (and have for the past few years) I didn’t really need much impetus to write on a daily basis.  Like most months, I missed a few days even though I said to myself I’d write a thousand words every day.  Unfortunately, with the issues that I’ve been having, that was a promise I was unable to keep :\  I did manage to write over 30k words, so though I didn’t make my daily totals, I succeeded in what I was driving for.

The Broken Rose is still not complete, but it’s 30k words closer and a major (and the most controversial part) is out of the way.  Now that it’s December,  I need to face the hard truth that I may not even complete it this month and I’ll still have this WIP past the new year.  I have a lot of writing goals for 2016, some of which involve doing work on original stories, which is very scary for me as I abandoned that ship for mental health reasons, but unfortunately, I have this drive that keeps me going despite knowing what rejection feels like.  I actually kind of hate it.  I think some people write because they want to and could quit at any time with no compunctions.  I’m not one of those people.  I have to write even though I feel like it kills me because writing leads to stories being finished, edited, submitted and rejected.  That’s just always the way its been.  Since my latest works have been fanfictions, the rejection aspect is more variable.  I’ve received mostly positive feedback on a work I can never publish anyway so I call that a win, but with original stories, there’s a whole different set of values.

Anyway, I hope all of you who did NaNoWriMo garnered something from it. Whether insight, a new writing habit, a finished story, or something else.  I’ll leave you with the final word count and bid you all good night.

I actually completed my thousand words before midnight tonight so they were officially done on the 28th.  So it’s “early” in my book hehe.  I might work on some macros tonight or my WIP video slideshow.  Or I might just watch some Netflix.  I’m pretty tired and my eyes are quite sore.

Today, on the Blackest of Fridays, I didn’t leave my house.

You know I was going to throw up my favorite Black Friday meme, but in searching for it I came across some of the most terrible things on the internet and now I’m more disheartened and disappointed in humanity than even before so I’m just going to move on.

I was able to play some catch up today and get out over 2k words.  These are my favorite lines from this session.  It’s unedited and I’m too tired to do so, but the spirit of it speaks to me.

“I love you as deep as the darkness that fills the emptiness between the stars…and you love me. How you love me…the worst of monsters, because you don’t know that I am. You love an illusion, a lie shrouded in light…and you think I’m a angel. I must tell you the truth, and yet I can’t speak, because I so fear your hatred. I am a coward who now fears the truth when once that was all I desired.”

It’s winding down, and I’m thinking I’ll finish at over 30k words at the least.  I’m hoping to finish the story itself before the year’s end, but I’m not sure any more.  The most important part of a paranormal romance has still yet to happen, though there’s been plenty of UST.  Granted, I don’t let it go on for too long, because I hate being that hard on my characters.

Anyway…here’s today’s word count.

Finally some progress.  I was able to get some writing done tonight to up my word count, plus get some notes down so I have something to go off of tomorrow.  I did underestimate how much longer this story was going to be though.  I thought I had maybe 30k words left, but I see that I have quite a bit more.  Maybe another 30k; I’m not sure, but The Broken Rose is looking to be nearly as long as Northern Lights much to my surprise.  This is of course before editing, which may cut it down significantly.  I’m still hoping to finish by the end of this year, and I’m also still hoping to get 30k words written before the end of this year’s NaNoWriMo, but we’ll see.  I do have off the next couple of days for the Thanksgiving holiday.

No writing was done today either.  I came home from my jazzercise class and went to bed.  Though I did start reading A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the prequel to the illustrious A Song of Ice and Fire Series, both of which I recommend.  It’s very good so far and shows a world a hundred years prior to the events of ASOIAF and from the point of view of a commoner, Duncan the Tall or just Dunk, a hedge knight.(the link is a bit spoilery if you haven’t read the novellas btw), so it’s an interesting change of view since the “current” novels are mostly written from the view point of nobles at least at the beginning.  I’ll more than likely write a review of this.

Shit…this is a post about my (lack of) word count, isn’t it?

No words written today.  I was still recovering from that argument I mentioned before.  Yes, I am this sensitive.  No, I will not just grow a thicker skin.  I wish it worked like that for me.  Some people seem to have the ability to brush these things off easily, whereas I constantly struggle with confidence and self-doubt.  I often think of Yeats’s poem “The Second Coming” (which I honestly think of a lot anyway due to various reasons) for the line:

“The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.”

But then I just worry that I’m being narcissist in thinking that I’m only doubting because I’m “the best.”  So many meta webs…
