2016 Wrap Up

The arbitrary unit of time we know as 2016 has come to an end to much celebration for many.  I am a bit more reserved in my exuberance, since the future bleeds from the past, and the past twelve months have been less than fortuitous.  I try not to be a Morbid Mary, but my hopes for the future are…guarded at best.  Be that as it may, our little wet rock has taken another trip around its star.  Here I present what I’ve accomplished in that time, and what I’d like to accomplish before the next trip comes to a close.

The Question of the Week

This was a fun, little, weekly foray, and I greatly enjoyed coming up with questions and seeing all of your answers, but I’ve decided to end it.  Formulating a query and answering it took much longer than many would think, and I desperately need to dedicate my time to other things.  You can find all of the questions at the end of the above link.  Please feel free to answer any that strike your fancy!  I’m always up for a good discussion.

Links go to my reviews.  The review for The Ghost of Buxton Manor is pending, as I just finished that this past week. I’m planning audio (potentially video) reviews for Paradise Lost and The Rape of Lucrece, which is why they don’t have reviews.

I technically only completed 18 books, since The Invisible Library and Magonia were both DNF, but I guess because I put an end date, Goodreads counts them.

Favorite Book: The Ghost of Buxton Manor by Jonathon L. Ferrara – I haven’t reviewed this yet, but I’ll have a glowing one for your perusal before the year is much older.  At initial rating I gave it four stars, but I just upped that to five because it deserves it.  The novel is an utter delight, and I highly recommend it.

There’s no reason I can’t start playing some of the remakes/reiterations of the series as I’m playing through the original numbered ones, especially considering I’m currently playing WOFF.  I started this the past Sunday and so far it is much easier than the original Final Fantasy.  I didn’t have to spend over a week grinding in order to garner enough gold to buy starter equipment and spells.  We’ll see if my difficulty assessment holds true after I enter the first dungeon, The Temple of Chaos.

Still nothing but good things to say about this game.  I’ve devised a Mirage chart on Excel to keep track of all of the ones I have and what their abilities are.  I’ve recently entered Pyrefly forest where I managed to capture a Babyhemoth, a new type of Mu, and a DualLizard.  There are five more mirages I need to go after before I leave, but I”ll need to clear up some space in my inventory.  I’ll probably work on that this (long) weekend.  Oh!  And I managed to beat the first coliseum fight with the FF Mascots (three chocobo riding moogles), but with the second fight against the same at a higher level, I got my ass handed to me.

The opening to this game is nothing short of amazing.  I couldn’t pick my jaw up off the floor.  It was better than many movies and just as suspenseful.  I’m am so freaking curious about the Illusive Man, but I don’t want to google anything about him and be spoiled.  So I guess I’ll have to wait until the story reveals why he has those glowing, cybernetic looking eyes.  So far my favorite character is Jacob, because he seems the most honest and straightforward.  I don’t really trust Miranda.  She just might be really cold and calculating, but there’s something about her.  Then there’s that random merc that joins Shepherd’s team.  He’s too much of a loose canon.  Of course any of the original crew are nothing short of awesome.

Games Added to Playlist: 4

  1. Fire Emblem – I’ve talked about this game quite a bit with Cheap Boss Attack so I’m surprised I didn’t add it until now.
  2. Persona 2: Eternal Punishment – This was another add due to conversations with CBA.
  3. Moirai – I get to thank The Otaku Judge for this one.  Their compelling review of it piqued my interest mightily.  I’m not usually into horror games, but I might warily check this one out.
  4. The Last Story – This is one of those games you know you should have on your backlog list, but you didn’t think about until you randomly saw it somewhere.  Actually, I remember where I saw it now.  Cheap Boss Attack made a post about organizing his games, and there was this game’s picture right in the middle.  That guy gets me to add more games than should be allowed hehe.
  5. Persona 2: Innocent Sin – I just added this tonight since it’s the first in the Persona 2 duology, prior to Eternal Punishment, which makes sense that such would follow “Innocent Sin.”

Games Bought This Week: 4

  1. Suikoden – PSN sale yo.
  2. Suikoden II – Again PSN sale
  3. Chrono Cross – Why did I buy it? *points above*
  4. Persona 2: Eternal Punishment – PSN sale again.  I’m going to hold off playing it until I can get Innocent Sin since that’s the first one.  Either I’ll just pick it up (it’s around $20) or wait for it to go on sale, too.

I spent around $11 for four games, which is not a shabby deal in the least.

Ah this is what I’m really interested in.  So a few people told me about all the side quests with this game, but wow are there a lot of side quests.  You’ll be planning to do something, and all of a sudden another aspect is introduced.

I met the Girl Who Forgot Her Name this week.

girl-who-forgot-her-name

That’s the sound of a thousand cosplayers sewing a thousand costumes

And in the same play session was introduced to the Coliseum by a deep-voiced Tonberry.  The coliseum is a throwback to FFVI, and I’m annoyed at myself for not realizing I didn’t need to go back through the Nether Nebula in order to fight Shiva again (not that I could do it there anyway), but instead have to challenge her, Ifrit, and Ramuh in that arena.  Granted, they’re not available yet, and I got my ass handed to me by three moogles on chocobos, but that’s another far more embarrassing story.  I may challenge them again now that I know they’re weak against ice, buuut then again I may just go mirage hunting to make sure I have one from every area.  Gotta catch them all! *ahem* I mean I would like to complete as much of the game as possible.  I’ll more than likely play more tomorrow since I”ll have the apartment to myself for the evening and I should be home a bit earlier.

One more episode left for the finale.  I can’t believe it’s almost over, but there are two more games left and a new one on the horizon.  The latest episode Shepherd and crew found out about the reapers and holy shit was that intense.  I knew about them from watching my husband play a bit and taking numerous wiki walks, but it was still a chilling moment.  I’m actually wondering if some race millions upon millions if not billions of years ago built the machines, which then gained sentience and destroyed their masters similar to how the Geth drove the quarians into exile.  It would make a tragic kind of sense, but there’s nothing official about this.  Once I finish the last episode, I’ll jump right into ME 2.

Games Added to Playlist: 2

  1. Suikoden – my friend Matthew, who has a Twitch channel here, informed me I needed to add this and the second below to my backlog, and since we both love Final Fantasy, I know he knows what he’s talking about with it.
  2. Suikoden II – talked about this above.

Games Bought This Week: 4

Thanks to Cheap Boss Attack telling me about the PSN 10th Anniversary sale, I was able to get in there and pick up four games!  Now, I’m kind of a dumb ass and thought I’d be able to play them all on my PS4, but alas this is not the case.  Some of them are only available on the PS3, which is…kind of weird to me, and I’m wondering if I did something wrong when I picked them up.

  1. fLOw – the Well-Red Mage’s recent review put me onto this game (it was on my Add list last week), and since it was less than $5, I figured that was a good deal.
  2. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night – I just can’t shut up about this game, and why should I?  I already know it’s awesome and I’ve never played it yet.  It and the remaining purchases seem to only be available for the PS3 or Vita.  Maybe the Shameful Narcissist should learn how to read the fine print…but I really thought I did!
  3. Grandia – the first game in the Grandia series, which I believe has at least three.  I’ve played and love Grandia II.  At the very least I can give the original a try.
  4. Xenogears – how could I pass this one up?  It’s a Squeenix RPG and apparently even symbolism heavier and more esoteric than FFVII, which is damn shocking seeing as I decided to studying an entire religion due to VII.  If this is so or even if it’s just equal, it’s something I’m very interested in.

All in all I spent around $10 for four games.  Not too shabby.

I haven’t clocked many hours in this (re?) replay, but I’m right outside of Fabul.  I keep having too much to do and not remembering it until it’s late, and the Fabul situation will take at least an hour to resolve since once you go in, you have to complete it.

As mentioned last week, I do want to and should be starting Dawn of Souls, which is also on the GBA, but the same issue has arisen for why I haven’t played much of the DS version of FFIV.  I’m also super stressed out and my concentration is shot 😦

world-of-final-fantasy

I love this game, at least what I’ve seen so far.  It’s Final Fantasy meets Pokemon, though the latter I was never really into.  Not because I’m derisive of it at all; it was just not one of my many hobbies.  WOFF is adorable for one thing.  I love the battle system (reminiscent of Child of Light, which used the same system as Grandia II).  It’s an ATB with a timeline that includes your characters and enemies.  When someone reaches the top, then an action can be done.

The story of the game involves fraternal twins Lann and Reynn, brother and sister, with amnesia (of course).  They’re compelled by a mysterious, white haired lady named Enna Kros to enter the world of Grymoire in order to remember who they are and realize their destiny.  Standard Final Fantasy fare.  The Pokemon influences have to do with Mirages, monsters you can catch and use for your own purposes either by stacking them (literally putting them on your head or you standing on them) or separate.  Lann and Reynn can also switch between a little (I forget the actual name) and Jiant form.  The little form looks like those Funko Pop figures..

Lann

Lann

The best part is the game gives you the option of Japanese voice acting with English subtitles, and I want this to be standard in every Final Fantasy going forward.  There’s no reason it can’t be, and both subbers and dubbers will be appeased.  I immediately changed it to that when I saw there was the option, especially after hearing from Cheap Boss Attack how annoying Tama’s voice is.  Just reading it, I get a Jar Jar Binks vibe, and it is so much less bothersome in Japanese…not that I’ve listened to it in English at all hehe.

I just finished a battle with three familiar summons, or rather I came upon three familiar summons and had to choose to battle one of them.  I was thankfully able to pull through, but now I want to go back, because once you fight a Mirage of any type, if you come upon it again, you can possibly catch it, and I want all the summons.

I’ve been remiss with this, too.  Seriously…the (American) election has caused me so much anxiety, and it’s at its peak today since it’s Election Day D: D: D:  I’m terrified of the result even as I’m hopeful that my country will make the right decision.  I have so many “logical” arguments that could just possibly be my whistle in the dark, but if I step out of myself (or at least try to) they seem pretty sound.  Ugh, I’m sorry I’m babbling about my election anxiety instead of talking about Mass Effect 😦

I think the last thing I saw was…omg I can’t remember.  Oh!  There was a Rachni attack on a listening post, but this was apparently a side quest from early in the game.  Olizandri didn’t get to it until right before the last mission starts.  I’m almost finished the LP.  I’m not going to write a full blown review since I haven’t played the game at all, but I’ll probably give some impressions.

Games Added to Playlist: 10

  1. Eternal Darkness – thanks to Load/Error for including this in his Halloween special!  It’s a horror game, so I can’t promise I’ll be able to play it or watch it, but it looks interesting enough that I want to try.
  2. fLOw – by the same people who opened their hearts and brought us Bound and Flower comes fLOwThe Well-Red Mage’s review prompted this add, and holy shit the name of one of the programmers is Jenova D: D: D: D: D: D:
  3. Dragon Quest V – the Evil Wizard, Esq. did a comprehensive review of a bunch of Dragon Quest games, which prompted me to mega add.
  4. Dragon Quest IV – already talked about why I added this above.  Curse you Evil Wizard! *shakes fist*
  5. Dragon Quest VIII
  6. Dragon Quest VII
  7. Dragon Quest VI
  8. Dragon Quest IV
  9. Dragon Warrior III – combo breaker 🙂
  10. Dragon Warrior II

Games Bought This Week: 0

No purchase this week; I’m quite broke, but Cheap Boss Attack gave me the lowdown that there’s a major sale on the PSN.  $2 games like Symphony of the Night, Grandia (the original), Final Fantasy Origins, and Chrono Trigger (which I have, but just spreading the information), and others.  The sale is supposed to go on until next Tuesday, so I should be able to scrape some money together by then.  I’d like to at least purchase Grandia and Symphony..

You know if I’m going to play a Final Fantasy on a handheld I should be playing Dawn of Souls or FFIII.  That would make the most sense since I want to play/review those anyway, and I can do it alongside the main numbered games, but nah, I’m replaying IV again because I’m ridiculous.

I haven’t played this as much this week, because I’ve been finding myself in some difficulties with the game.  It’s a bit harder than the last Mario platformer I played, and the titular plumber seems to either be wearing slippery shoes or those platforms are a lot more slick than they look.  I tend to slide a lot, therefore sliding off into pits.  I also wish you could save whenever you wished instead of having to save after spending coins to open a locked door.  So while I don’t have much game time clocked, I do have critiques.  Never say reading my posts is futile 😉

Oh man things are getting to spicy for the pepper as our irrepressible let’s player heads towards the end.  A fatal decision was made (at the point in the game where a fatal decision had to be made), and this Shepherd chose *spoiler* Ashley *end spoiler* for the chopping block instead of *spoiler* Kaidan *end spoiler*.  To be honest I think I would’ve made the same decision, but I would’ve gone a different route in the romance.  Olizandri decided that his Shepherd was more career focused and less love inclined, but he did say he’d prefer someone with Wrex’s personality, and I wholeheartedly agree with that.  Personality-wise I think that would be a good match, though I can’t even remotely imagine (nor would I want to) how human-krogan carnal relations would work.  Ew.  I would romance Liara or possibly Tali (if she’s an option).  I like the way the latter says “Saren.”  It’s almost like she’s saying the “r” as a “d.”  It’s a sweet accent.

Whom would or did you pick in your Mass Effect romance?

Games Added to Play List: 5

  1. Final Fantasy IV – I just can’t get enough of this game, can I?  I added the PSP version to my list because for some God only knows reason, it wasn’t there.
  2. Drill Dozer – thanks to Matt for reviewing this on his blog Nintendo Bound!  I added the game after reading it and making (what I thought was) a witty quip about its similarities with Dig Dug.  Either way, you should check out the review and think about playing it yourself.
  3. The Legend of Dragoon – this is one of those times where I need to kick myself for forgetting who I was discussing this with.  It was a fellow blogger, and the conversation prompted me to add this.  I believe we were talking about the game in the number 4 slot and this came up alongside.  Ack, if you remember the conversation feel free to identify yourself in the comments.  I’m terrible at source information.
  4. Breath of Fire III – this game seems as illustrious and epic-worthy as my beloved Final Fantasies.  I have no issues playing RPGs outside of my favorite franchise, especially seeing as Grandia II is one of my favorite non-FF games.  I’d mention the Chrono Series, but since it’s also by Squeenix, it doesn’t really count as completely outside of FF.
  5. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night – none other than the Well-Red Mage encouraged this add.  Initially, I just had it on my To Watch list, but then I remembered I love platformers and RPGs, and this is the best of both worlds with the beautiful Alucard for bonus.

Erm, well it’s been about a week since I purchased World of Final Fantasy and no I haven’t played it yet.  I was even out sick today, but didn’t crack it open, probably on account of being sick/not feeling well.  Here’s hoping I get to play it tomorrow so I can make a report to you lovely bloggers next week.

“What’s this?!” you exclaim.  “Didn’t she already beat this game last week?  I’m sure I recall since she wouldn’t shut up about it.”  Patience faithful follower.  I did beat Final Fantasy IV.  The original Final Fantasy IV.  Then I went through all of my games in order to add them to a new/created shelf on my Grouvee list for “Owned.”  I knew I had FFIV for the PSP, but I forgot I also had it for the Game Boy Advance, which is a part of the original Nintendo DS.  So I’ve been playing this version (and another game I’ll talk about below) as I continue to plug away at the review/analysis.

Along with the above, my dilemma about what to play in between Final Fantasies (oddly enough since I’m using another version of the same Final Fantasy #meta) has been resolved by this DS side-scrolling platformer.  While going through all of the games in my possession, I came across this and several others I wasn’t aware I owned.  Many of them are on my TBP list so I was pretty excited.  Anyway, I have something to play in between and it’s a handheld, which makes it even easier.

Along with the basic game, New SMB has several mini-games of the action, puzzle, and table (even set in a casino with Luigi as the dealer) variety.

There’s also a versus you can do, but since I only have one DS (my husband’s.  Mine disappeared a few years ago), I won’t be doing this anytime soon.

I’m currently on World 2 and having quite the trouble with Lakitu.  Speaking of which, how does everyone pronounce his name?  I grew up saying “luh-KY-too,” but when I watched a let’s play of one of the Mario games, the LPer pronounced it “LACK-uh-too” as if it rhymed with “whackadoo.”

Let me know in the comments!

Games Currently Watching

Title: Mass Effect
Series: Mass Effect
Genre: Action RPG – Sci-Fi
Developer: BioWare
Original Platform(s): Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3
Original Release Date: November 16, 2007
Let’s Player: Olizandri
Date Started: September 29, 2016

I think I’m about halfway done this watch, which makes me sad even though I have two more really long games to watch.  Olizandri just completed the “Bring Down the Sky” DLC, and, well, pretty much Shepherd literally had to catch a meteor (technically an asteroid, but semantics).  I’m more and more impressed with the level of storytelling and voice acting this game presents the more I watch.   If you’ve played ME, what’s your favorite mission?

Oh!  Along the vein of pronunciation, Olizandri says “Mako” like “MACK-oh,” which is really funny since I’d say it like “MAY-koh,” similar to how I pronounce it for FFVII, and that came about because of the sharks.  Sometimes I’m unreasonably irked by what I perceive as mispronunciation (there was this other let’s player that shall remain nameless who I wanted to hunt down and throw a dictionary at.  He pronounced Canaan “kuh-NAHN.”  WTF is that?), but Olizandri’s doesn’t bother me at all.  Maybe it’s because he’s English or maybe it’s because it would be weird to equate concentrated Lifestream and a description of glowing eyes with an all terrain vehicle *shrug*

Games Added to Play List: 11

I’m being lazy.  I don’t feel like listing out all of the games I added this week.  Feel free to check my Grouvee account, which is linked above if you’re curious what I have on my list.  I…also didn’t keep good track of the games I added anyway, and the site doesn’t really have good ways of sorting.  I’ll try to do better next week, but I make no promises.

Games Added to Watch List: 2

Since there are just two I can say one’s Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood.  I added it because it’s one of the one’s I discovered I own…or borrowed.  I think I borrowed it from my brother, which is hilarious considering the game is called “Brotherhood.”

The other is The Last Of Us.  Another discovery in my game cache.

Games Bought This Week: 1

Title: World of Final Fantasy

world-of-final-fantasy

I have actually pre-ordered a video game, and of course it’s a Final Fantasy, which should come as no shock to anyone.  However, it’s been quite a few years since I’ve been interested enough in the series to warrant buying on release date let alone before.  I did have some encouragement from one of my fellow bloggers, Cheap Boss Attack, who said the magic words in his post about the demo: Sephiroth summon.  If you buy the limited edition (which I’m assuming you have to pre-order), it comes with such.  How could I resist? ♥♥♥

What are you currently playing and/or watching? Is it something new or old?  Is it a first time run or a replay?  What’s the genre?  Would you recommend it?  What’s on your radar to play next?
