I am well into the third act of the game and have over 120 hours in.  I’m not exactly sure where when it’s going to end, but I at least know what the real threat is now that we’ve cut through the chaff.  I’ve started using a spoiler free* guide to the side quests since Vesperia has a lot of missables.  There are some that I’m already out of luck on (like the 50% Monster Book and Nan) since I didn’t know about them in the beginning (and watching Oliz play through it has really confirmed that), but I’m trying to get all of the ones I can.  There are some I’m willing to forgo like the dragon races with Ba’ul.  I just eked out a win in the first level.  I’m not good at those types of games, and the big reason to do it seemed to be so you’d get the upgrade that would allow Ba’ul to land on this one island, but something happened in the game that made it accessible so I’m not even sure that’s necessary anymore.

This was such a quick and fun play.  I wish it were a little bit longer, but I have a feeling they’re going to make more; the ending certainly teased it (a little too cruelly if you ask me).  I was a little worried it was going to be a scary game, and I’ll be honest, near the end it gets the slightest bit creepy, but that’s only because I’m a wuss puss who’s been watching too many horror LPs.  It only takes about two hours to complete, and there’s a robust hint system if you get lost.  I used it more than I wanted to, but that’s totally on me.  I’ll be looking for more items from Godbey Games.

I was just going to put this on hold after I saw it had a high rating on Grouvee (5/5 stars), even though I felt the same way about it as I did The Lion’s Song.  While I’m obviously into the Lovecraft thing, it’s not engaging enough.  According to the description, your choices do matter for the ending (or maybe I’m still thinking of The Lion’s Song idk), but it’s just not enough.  The definitive DNF came about when I loaded it up, and it started me at the beginning because apparently the save symbol I saw did nothing, and I didn’t feel like going through the first chapter again.  Maybe I’ll find and watch a Let’s Play if I feel so inclined, but I’m done with it myself.

I did the same thing with this that I did with GRIS: stopped playing less than a half hour before I’d be done.  With TT I wound up having to sit through some of the ending exposition again because it didn’t save it, but it’s okay.  The game manages to have both a definitive and cliffhanger ending, and there is a sequel in the works.  It’s weird there’s no name for the franchise yet (or at least there isn’t one on Grouvee).  I’m assuming it’s “Detective Grimoire” or something like that, since he’s featured in both.  I just followed the indie devs on Twitter since I want to know as soon as the next game comes out.

I’m closing in on the end.  Well I’m about to face the penultimate boss then there will hopefully be some more side quests afterwards.  I randomly found one after finishing up a big mission with the Crystals involving me essentially going to hell and beating up the devil.  Afterwards, it took me forever to find the last treasure chest when it was literally right near the beginning of the dungeon.

I started watching a Let’s Play of this while I’m playing it.  I’m far enough along that there’s really no danger of seeing something before I get there myself.  I don’t even think the streamer has reached where I am in his playthrough yet let alone what he’s posted on YouTube.  I’ll talk about it more in the What I’m Watching section, but I brought it up here to say I definitely could’ve done the jobs better.  I pretty much shoehorned Gloria and Elvis as casters instead of branching out, whereas in the LP he has Elvis (originally a Black Mage) as a Vanguard main with Black Mage subclass so he’s essentially a spellblade.  I wish I’d done that instead of pigeonholing both him a Gloria, but it’s not like it’s too late.

I was mostly avoiding grinding and that was to my own detriment.  I was barely getting through boss battles usually after the second or third time trying, and I finally wound up googling how to defeat one.  The strategy involves things I haven’t done yet with skills I don’t have.  I picked up a ton of new jobs and was trying to learn them as I went along, but really I should’ve been using the “bait” items that cause you to get into multiple battles in order to earn Job Points (JP).  If you give two characters the JP up abilities you’ll earn like six job levels per battle session.  Since there are twelve levels per job that means it only takes two.  I was also not doling out my armor properly so I’ll remedy that.  I’m really trying not to use a strat guide for this game and figure it out myself, but sometimes you need that little nudge.  I’m wondering how many jobs there will be.  Every time you beat a boss you get a new one.

I was hoping I’d be finished this by now, so I could at least say I did “one” in February (four LOLOL), but it’s been a few days since I picked it up.  I absolutely love it, but I wish there was a way to manually save.  I have to wait for it to do so on its own, and I don’t always notice when it does and am afraid to just turn off in case I lose like an hour of progress.

What I DNF’d

  • What Remains of Edith Finch – I honestly almost forgot I’d started playing this then stopped.  Not because I don’t like it, but I thought I hadn’t reviewed it based on the LP I watched, but I did.  I don’t have any issue replaying a game, but with so many on my backlog, I figured I’d move on to something else.

I remember either reading or talking to Kim of Later Levels about this, and I’ve had it not only on my backlog but my Switch itself for a while.  I figure it’s a good game to play for 4 in February.  It’s absolutely gorgeous with an aesthetic that reminds me of Child of Light’s watercolor graphics and fluidity.

I was missing one Mirage, Garland, and needed to run around talking to characters in order to achieve 100% for Who’s Who.  Apparently, I’m not the only one who had problems doing this, as the google revealed forum pages of others asking how.

I really hope Squeenix releases some DLCs for this, because there’s so much they could do with it.  Add extra dungeons, more Mirages, more characters (like how many Final Fantasy characters even are there??  I should make a list lol), more towns/locations.  The options are literally limitless.

I’ve already reviewed this, so I’m not going to do another full review.  I might do an addendum to talk about the additions though.

I have a plan now that I’ve fought the 4th Stratum boss again.  I definitely need to level and and/or get better weapons, which I need to make money for.  Either way I can do both at the same time by grinding.  My plan is to go through the stratum and hit all the collection and mining sites while fighting the FOEs.  That should net me enough resources to afford the equipment as well as working on my levels.

What I Played

  • Picross S5 – I’m now on the 15×15 megapuzzles, so I alternate between them and the regular ones.
  • AVICII Invector – I felt like playing through some of my favorite songs the other night so I did.
  • Golf Peaks – Well it finally happened…I wound up googling a solution.  It was for puzzle 7-4.  I think if I’d realized you didn’t need the move that popped the ball into the air to get up a hill I might’ve gotten it, because I was going off the premise that I could only use one particular card for the final move.  I managed to solve the next puzzle, but I’m kind of stumped with 7-6, or it was late and I was tired lol.

What I Demoed

  • Fitness Boxing – I’m going to buy it.  I really wish I’d had the time/energy to play it again, because I really like it.  I can do it sitting down (even though you’re supposed to stand, but eh, modification is okay), and I love rhythm games.

I just downloaded the final demo for Bravely Default II and another one for a game called Balan Wonderworld from Square Enix (actually, they’re both from Squeenix lol, at least Squeenix sent me the email about Balan Wonderworld), but I haven’t had the chance to play them yet.  Will report back when I do!

What I Watched

  • The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky (Olizandri) – Only a few more videos left!  I’m excited to continue this series and possibly play it myself.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask (Olizandri) – I just wanted a Zelda game to watch at work the other day, and MM is always an excellent choice.

So I got the notification that AOC is streaming Among Us again right before I started doing this.  I would’ve had this up sooner, but I passed out right after work (I was supposed to cut up vegetables for dinner, but oops, sleepy time instead!  The best part is I’d just downed a big ass mug of coffee), so this is coming to you later than expected (if you even expect this.  Why am I thinking you are???).  I still haven’t started a new Final Fantasy, but I did say I wanted to get my notes together.  I’d also like to maybe finish the review for FFVI.  I’m also working on notes for my WIP, so yeah.  I think it would make sense to get some things finished before I start anything else, at least something that’s going to be as time and emotionally consuming as FFVII. I may play Edith Finch in the interim.
