What I Finished

Title: Final Fantasy VII Remake
Series Title: Final Fantasy, Compilation of Final Fantasy VII
System: PlayStation 4

Cover of Final Fantasy VII Remake coverDate Started: 4/10/20
Date Finished: 4/27/20

I don’t think I’ve ever finished a game so quickly, though I’m still not technically done.  I finished it, but didn’t complete it.  I still need to do the Chapter Select to pick up what I missed.  I never got Bahamut probably because I still have two Chadley missions to complete.

I’m sure people want to hear my opinion about the ending.  Well, initially, I was pretty pissed off, because yes, it’s different, and it’s pretty obvious Squeenix is cashing in on fandom power to make some things happen.  I was also annoyed because at first it seemed like a middle finger to the old school fans, but after talking to EWE I’ve calmed down a bit.  One, the original still exists; two, there seems to be some Twitter talk from SE themselves that they’re not changing the story of VII, which is…confusing given the end of this game, but whatever, and three (and probably most importantly), they don’t owe the fans anything.  Many of us often fall into this trap of thinking creators owe us either the story we expect and/or want, and they don’t.  Now, this in no way means we can’t say what we want and/or criticize what we get (have you heard what I’ve said about Game of Thrones?), but at the end of the day, it’s the creators’ story to tell how they see fit.  There is definitely a give and take interplay.  They can choose to do what they want, and we in turn can absolutely say what we like/don’t like; we can be disappointed, or even choose not to engage, but fans often get to the point where they think creators owe them something, and to be honest, I still struggle with this, but it’s more along the lines that both sides have both freedom and rules.  Best way I can explain this would be to have you all just to listen to this wonderful song.

I also made the mistake once of excoriating a book/series after reading the first one when everything I hated/bitched about was fixed in the second, so I had to get down on my claws and do the apology dance.

Gif of Zoidberg doing the Apology Dance in front of Fry who is standing before a fire. Clip is from the show Futurama.

I NEVER want to do that again

So this is why I’m going to hold off on any major critiques until the entire series/story is out.  What I do need to do is watch a Let’s Play of the game now, and luckily Olizandri has one (more on that later), while I replay the original or rather a port of the original on my Switch.  I also need to replay Crisis Core, though I really wish they’d just re-release that for Switch or something to make my life easier.  I think this might be the Year of Final Fantasy VII where I finally finish the OG myself, write my review, and maybe a few essays.  I still have so much more research to do, but I also don’t want to wait on writing things because I don’t feel like I’m good enough to do so, you know?  I can always go back and update when I find more information and/or have more revelations.  Idk.  Maybe I’ll try to amp up my researching of core texts/works.

If you’re played or finished FFVIIR let me know what you thought of it.  I honestly felt like it was a (near) perfect game, and it was just…fun.  Not only was it fun in and of itself, but you could tell the devs had a fucking BLAST making it.  The part where they parachute back to the slums was just proof of that.  The voice acting is ace (omg Brianna White ♥), and the game is just BEAUTIFUL.  Alright, I’m done gushing about it…for now 😉

Currently playing one of the theater cases.  I finished up the full length DLC about the time traveling bride.  That was fun.  The case I’m on now features Pearly so I’m not unhappy about that.  I love her so hard.

Let’s Plays

Oliz finished up his FFVIII Remastered Let’s Play, and I’m not ashamed to admit I shed a few tears at the ending.  It always leaves me with chills, and I have to say it really is one of the best if not the best final boss sequences in the entire series.  Then today he did the fight with the Omega Weapon in Ultimecia’s Castle, something I’ve never done.  I don’t even know if I knew about it lol.  I also don’t know if I’m going to do it since it seems needlessly hard for very little reward outside of bragging rights.  I have plenty to brag about so….

I’m also still watching his Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door Let’s Play, but I should be finished that soon, since he’s through the fore mentioned.  Next I want to start watching his FFVIIR LP.  I’m…not entirely sure why I’ve waited this long to start it.  I think I needed some breathing room from FFVII after I finished it myself to think about what I saw and how I feel.  My husband has also been playing it, so there’s that, too.

I guess i can consider Andromeda and Death Stranding on hold, but I will come back to them eventually.

I wonder if I should just change my day for this post to Friday, but eventually the world will start spinning again; my husband will go back to bowling, and I’ll need the free Fridays for recording.  Until then it’s nice to have the wiggle room when I don’t feel like doing it on Thursday, and of course there’s always Saturday, too.  Eh, I’ll keep it Thursday.

What has been your quarantine go to game?  Have you played the new Animal Crossing?

What I Obtained

  • Final Fantasy VII Remake – $59.99 @ Amazon (I’m still waiting for it to arrive in the mail, but Amazon assures me it’ll be here today.  I won’t receive the copy from Squeenix until Tuesday…which would be ridiculous if we weren’t in the middle of a pandemic.  I’ll give the big S a pass)

Watching Olizandri do his play through made the itch too strong.  I’d been thinking about replaying this, but wanted to stick to my order.  Then I considered I’d be playing the FFVII Remake before I replayed the original, and I hatched another plan: play the Remake then replay the original, while at the same time playing this and writing the review/analysis for FFVI.  It’s Final Fantasy all the time here in the house of TSN, but who’s surprised by that?

Creative Christmas – The Helper’s Reward

Tis the Christmas season (or Advent to be theologically accurate), and in the spirit of the season, the lovely blogger over at Later Levels has decided to celebrate the 12 Days of Christmas a few days earlier with 12 gaming related questions for all of us good, little gaming elves out there.  These are my responses.

🎄   27 December 2017:   Your help must have worked, because it’s now Christmas morning and presents are under the tree! There’s a fancy box with your name on it; which gaming-related item are you hoping is inside?

My very own PS4!!!

I’d also accept a Wii U.

I know you’re all probably shocked that it’s not something Sephiroth related, but I pretty much have all of the Sephiroth statues, three Masamunes, a one-wing pin, numerous pairs of knee high boots, and anything else I want, I just buy myself.  The systems though are expensive and would take much grinding to earn enough gil to purchase on my own, whereas everything else is more than feasible so long as I don’t obtain it all at once.

What present would fulfill your wildest gaming holiday dreams?  Is it a game or system itself, or is it a fandom item?  Let’s talk gaming presents in the comments!

Progress: Chapter 2 – Preparing for second official mission

I liberated the town of McTighe and gathered all of the citizens for the mayor’s speech.  For my trouble, I received a turbo ether.  I couldn’t figure out for the life of me how to gather phantoma, so I quick google search was necessary.  I may do the McTighe mission again just to make sure I’m collecting as much of it as I can.  The coliseum still hasn’t opened, but I have faith.

Progress: Walz Castle

I didn’t get a chance to play this either.  I’ve been spending a lot of my time trying to catch up on my emails and blog subs.  To be honest guys…I’ve been really stressed about that.  I hate falling and feeling behind, but there’s just so much on my plate that I can’t keep up.  I don’t want this to be a bitchfest, but it’s like I’m constantly fighting fatigue, fighting lack of time, trying to figure out what I’m going to work on, falling behind no matter how well I schedule and prioritize, and it’s seriously stressing me the fuck out.  I know none of you blame me for not catching up on your blogs, but I just feel really guilty that I don’t have time to read and comment on stuff, because everyone here has been so supportive with my blog.  Like you take the time to read my ramblings and comment, and many of you are as busy as me if not busier (hell, some of you have children).  The least I can do is return the favor, but I also need to keep on my weekly posts and work on my backlog of book reviews and game reviews and try to read, write/edit, work on essays (which hasn’t happened in months), try to make time to test out my audio/video equipment, but I only have a few hours of useful, I guess I’ll call it, awareness (?) every day.  I get home from work and it’s almost a rush to work on what I can work on, because I have chronic fatigue, so I have to prioritize what takes the most concentration, because that’s the first thing that goes when I get tired so I try to do the writing/editing tasks first before something more passive like reading blog posts or watching something..  Even with medicine and the coffee I drown myself in it’s draining, and I can’t even seem to catch up on the weekends.

Ugh, sorry I wasn’t supposed to overrun my FFV section with my complaints.  I think I need to come up with a better scheduling system.  Planning and organizing is how I’ll save the day (and my sanity).

Progress: Walz Castle

I’m still at Walz Castle, but I managed to loot the basement and snag myself 3000 GP and an Elf Cloak.  That stupid harpy down there attacked me three or four times, but I was able to run away, though it killed/knocked out two of my characters.  I attempted to fight/obtain Shiva, but she and her cohorts kicked my ass even though I took the advice on GameFAQS of switching everyone to a Black Mage and casting Ice.  I’m going to do some leveling and give it another try.  I might look up another walkthrough and see if there are any more tips, or I may just continue on to Walz Tower and come back for her later.

Progress: Chapter 2

I managed to muddle my way through Chapter 1, defeat the Tiger L’Cie with Odin, and now I’m back at the academy after a long cut scene showing a meeting of the higher ups.  The coolest person there was obviously Dr. Arecia Al-Rashia..

I have quite the lady boner right now, but I’m pretty sure she’s going to end up being one of those morally ambiguous if not downright evil characters, since she appears to be fulfilling Final Fantasy’s mad scientist archetype shared by VII’s Hojo and IV’s Lugae who both did utterly reprehensible things.  *spoiler* It doesn’t help that she’s Ace’s mother, so she’s more of a combination of Hojo and Lucrecia in one.  In the meeting it’s revealed the Agito Cadets were created by combining magic and technology,.*end spoiler*

The more I think about it, the more I realize Final Fantasy is more science fantasy than anything else.  Even FFs I-VI with their more  high fantasy setting have that element to them.  Hm, since IV-VI have that steampunkish vibe, could we then consider the steampunk subgenre to be a facet of science fantasy, as well?  (I’m posting this to the Book of Faces, as well…wish me luck.)

Progress: Abandoned ship yard

I was wrong with how Faris’s secret is revealed!  I’m just going to tell you, because it’s not that big of a deal, and I like some of the dialogue around it.  Faris is a woman, and I thought the big reveal would happen when they went through the canal, and the monster therein attacked them because it only attacks women.  Then I remembered that Reina is in the group, so even if the attack did occur (which it did as part of the plot), it really wouldn’t matter.
