Title: The Mabinogion Tetralogy
Author: Evangeline Walton
Date Added: August 24, 2014
Date Started: July 31, 2016

Medium: Paperback
Progress: 44%

There’s a forlorness about this compendium that haunts many myths, but that just makes me love them more.  I still have no hope of finishing this before the end of the year, and I only have three books left to fulfill my Goodreads goal.  Judging from the fact it took me nearly half a year to get to less than 50%, I severely doubt I’ll read more than that in the next three weeks.

Title: The World of Ice and Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and the Game of Thrones
Author: George R R Martin
Date Added: January 7, 2015
Date Started: February 8, 2015
Date Finished: December 4, 2016

Media: Hardback
Progress: Completed

I have reached Asshai and beyond.  My time in The World of Ice and Fire is done…for now.  I’m not going to write a formal review of this since it doesn’t really lend itself to that.  I’ll say it’s a wonderful resource to any ASOIAF fans who wish to know a more about Planetos, and it’s compiled as though a maester wrote it.

I currently have no reference books in my possession that I want to read.  There are a number on my list that I don’t own such as the Hyrule Historia, the Sepher Yetzirah, or Joseph Campbell’s The Power of Myth that I’d love to get my hands on, but I doubt that will happen before Christmas.  I do own The Universe in a Nutshell by Stephen Hawking, but I don’t have any desire to read that right now.  Not that I don’t care about quantum physics.  In fact I just saw an ASOIAF video (oddly enough) that was talking about that very thing today, but it’s not something I’m in the mood to read about.  I do have more ASOIAF reference books, but I don’t want to dive into another one back to back.  I think I’m going to just add another reading day to A Court of Thorns and Roses and maybe see if I can get that finished before the end of the year.

Title: The Ghost of Buxton Manor
Author: Jonathon L. Ferrara
Date Added: August 16, 2016
Date Started: October 17, 2016

Media: Kindle
Progress: 55%

I realized that there was a Peter Pan/Neverland connection to this story fairly quickly, but it was brought to my attention recently how deep this connection goes.  Rupert Buxton is a real person.  I knew about Michael Davies, but I had no idea that there was more than a kernel of truth to this tale.  Once I’m finished, I think I’ll hunt this information out.

Title: A Court of Thorns and Roses
Series Title: A Court of Thorns and Roses
Author: Sarah J. Maas
Date Added: June 15, 2016
Date Started: November 20, 2016

Media: Paperback
Progress: 27%

This book grows more compelling as each chapter goes along.  Maas knows how to keep it intriguing and is adept at ending many chapters on a cliffhanger so you need to continue to the next.  That’s how I managed to read three the other day.

As I stated above, since I finished TWOIAF and don’t have another reference book readily available, I’m going to read this on the days I planned to read World, and hopefully next year I’ll have some Amazon gift cards to pick up more references.  Until then, this is interesting enough to hold my attention, and Feyre is becoming a bit less annoying if still impetuous.

I’m not sure whether I’m naming the sections here correctly.  I wanted the “In Progress Fanfictions Read” to be stories that were ongoing that I was up to date on.  I guess I’ll keep it like it is.  I managed to read runicmagitek’s latest chapter this week.  If you’re a fan of FFVI, I recommend.  She’s converted me to another ship 🙂

She got me again.  Cupcakes and Machetes gave this a glowing, kick ass review and I was snared.  It seems like a hodgepodge of ideas thrown together gloriously with not a trite trope to be found.  I need to do another round of sample downloading to either rave or rue what’s on my TBR list.

Title: Dreadnought
Series Title: Nemesis
Author: April Daniels
Date Added: December 4, 2016

Not only does the premise of this sound amazing (main character inherits the power of the world’s now deceased superhero in what sounds like a better version of The Santa Clause), but the MC is a trans girl.  From what I’m reading of the reviews, the author appears to have done a good job with this even if the story might have some hiccups.  I’ll be on the lookout to see any of the trans bloggers I follow have something to say about this since the lived experience is going to give the best review.

Title: Doon
Series Title: Doon
Author: Carey Corp & Lorie Langdon
Date Added: December 4, 2016

This sounds like an amazing real life fairy tale set in Scotland where the main character attempts to find a reprieve from the mysterious blond boy who keeps popping up wherever she goes.  Even in the land of poets and warriors, Veronica finds adventure to augment what’s been haunting her her entire life.  I want to know how all of these seams fit together.

Title: Mind Games

I almost forgot to add this, but my Total Book count below saved me from THAT embarrassment.  It wasn’t adding up.  So this was another recommendation from Kim, and even though it’s the second book in the series, I’m going to give a whirl before the first.  I’m sure you all know by now I have a special spot for former enemies becoming lovers, and if you didn’t know that, well now you do.   I also enjoy Sherlock Homes adaptations especially where character’s identities stir the pot a little bit.  In this one Moriarity or Mori is a dashing, young, female detective partnered with Holmes.  Sounds like a rousing tale.

I love this story so hard.  It’s not only charming, but necessary.  This isn’t a spoiler, so I don’t feel bad saying it.  Aaron, Rupert’s love interest, is a confirmed gay teen whose parents accept him for who he is.  This is so freaking huge and important, I can’t even explain.  There are plenty of stories and plenty of real life examples where this isn’t the case.  Fiction is often a reflection of the future, so it’s nice to see this, and it’s even better to know that gay, bi, queer and/or questioning teens have something like this to read.

This book just gets more intriguing as the chapters go along.  I’ve managed to limit myself to one a session, but Maas certainly keeps the suspense ramped up.  The one critique I have has to do with Feyre’s attitude.  I can’t quite put my finger on it, but some of her aspects are kind of illogical.  There was a scene where she was nearly fainting from hunger, but refused to eat.  Now while I understand the tales about eating in the land of faery, what other choice does she have?  It’s either take the chance and eat or certainly die of starvation, and while I can understand the initial trepidation, there really isn’t any other option.  This is probably just a minor gripe though.  I really can’t wait to find out more about what’s going on.

I’ve been seeing this book floating around for a few months now, dipping in and out of friends’ TBR lists and of course fluttering across the silver screen.  It was the “asshole” comment that got me…yes, you never grow too old for that sort of humor, and Cupcakes and Machetes decided to, er, showcase that on her review.

“My asshole is doing as much to keep me alive as my brain.”

Look…I’m not going to pretend like I don’t want to know more, regardless how gross.  There’s real science in this book.  Real science.  And real assholes.

I’m actually further along in this book than Goodreads would like to believe.  The count is higher on the edition there, a little over 900 pages, but my copy only has 718.  I noticed something was off when I saw I was nearly halfway through, but the percentage only had me around a third.

I have one chapter left in the second “branch,” and since there are four of them, it makes sense I should be nearly halfway done.

I’m rounding the final corner with this book and should hopefully finish next week.  I really want to read the section on Asshai by the Shadow.  There’s some dark truth to be garnered from there and where we see a great deal of GRRM’s Lovecraftian leanings.

I reached an integral part in this novel.  We’ll say the term “necromancer” was looked up.  Now I know what that means, but I suppose 17 year old boys would be a bit clueless, although I think I was familiar with the term around that age…

I’m hooked already, and need to thank Katherine McIntyre for recommending it.  The writing is lush and prosaic with a bite behind.  I’m also thankful to Ms. Maas for seamlessly tell the reading how to pronounce the main character’s name: Feyre.  I was saying/thinking “FAY-er” in my head, but it’s said “FAY-ruh,” which makes sense given the story’s subject matter.

Title: The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Author: Robert Louis Stevenson
Date Added: November 16, 2016

Two embarrassing confessions: not only have I never read this, but I didn’t realize it was written by the illustrious RLS of Treasure Island fame, but I’ve also never finished Treasure Island so there’s that.  I attempted it on numerous occasions, but it didn’t hold my interest.  I did enjoy the BBC’s Jekyll though (which you should all check out; it’s magnificent), so I figured I might be able to mange this one.  Besides, I need to read this as a precursor to the book below.

Title: The Jekyll Revelation
Author: Robert Masello
Date Added: November 16, 2016

Reviewed here by Kim of By Hook or By Book, this is the reason I (finally) now need to read the original classic above.  I am a fan of dual identity stories and unity of opposite motifs.

Title: The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet
Series Title: Wayfarers
Author: Becky Chambers
Date Added: November 16, 2016

This was one of the books I passed numerous times in my Goodreads newsfeeds, but as it was on a top five dystopian novels list by Cupcakes and Machetes described as a character driven space opera, I did a full stop and added it.  I’m becoming more  of a sci-fi girl by the second, and it’s really all thanks for FFVII for being sci-fi/fantasy fusion.  Haha, and I remember the time when I had no interest in that game for that very reason.  Memories.

Title: Hyperion
Series Title: Hyperion Cantos

I’ve passed this book in bookstores quite a few times, picked it, thumbed through it, but never made the purchase.  Then I ♥ Old Games did a quick post on it, and I figured I might as well add it to my TBR list under “References.”  I’ll get to it eventually.

I usually wait until I’ve read a sample before adding a book to my “Really Want to Read” sublist, but I may make an exception with this one.  Reviewed by Kim of By Hook or By Book with a glowing five stars, the novel offers the unorthodox point of view in Caity, a dog who knows the truth about her haunting family.  I want to keep this one on my radar among the ever growing sea of additional novels.

Title: Magonia
Series Title: Magonia
Author: Maria Dahvana Headley
Date Added: January 31, 2016
Date Started: October 1, 2016

Media: Paperback
Progress: 50%

I’m exactly halfway through this book and I’m really losing steam. Ever since Aza woke in the world of Magonia, I’ve found more things to critique. I really don’t like any of the Magonians *spoiler* including her birth mother *end spoiler* and I want her to go back to her world and Jason (since all of this is in the blurb, I don’t feel like I’m giving anything away). It’s like the author made these characters extremely unlikable, and that’s a poor choice for the “torn between two worlds” paradigm.  If Aza is supposed to feel connected to this world so that there’s some conflict when/if she gets the chance to return to her own, Ms. Headley needs to start portraying that better.  This seems more like it’s an “escape at all costs,” and I don’t think that’s what she was going for.

I’m debating whether to continue with this or not, but I want to see if the author can turn it around, and I am 50% through.

Title: Timekeeper
Series Title: Timekeeper
Author: Tara Sim
Date Added: November 11, 2016

This tale of an alternative Victorian world controlled by clock towers was brought my attention by the irrepressible Writing Hufflepuff.  I’m a bit of a closet fan of time travel, loops, and theory, which isn’t too much of a shock if you delve into the stories I love.  They all have an eerie time factor involved with them.  This YA has that along with a lovely same sex romance done right (according to the WH), so I’m excited to add it to my TBR pile.

Title: The Moonborn
Author: D.F. Lovett
Date Added: November 15, 2016

This was one of those weird situations where I heard about one thing from two different sources in a short amount of time.  I received a Twitter DM from the author D.F. Lovett the other day asking if I wanted to read/review his book.  Due to me not having any time and currently embroiled in four other books, I had to politely decline, but since I know how hard it is to be a writer and readers are our lifeblood, I did ask him what the book’s title was so I could add it to my TBR list.  Upon hearing the title, a memory sparked in my head, because I knew I’d heard the name recently, and after some rumination, I recalled that Pat Sponaugle had reviewed it here on his blog.

It’s heralded as “Moby Dick on the moon.”  Now I’ve never read Melville’s door stopper, and I’ve never really had any interest in doing so, but that being said, the blurb for Mr. Lovett’s book is enticing, and who knows?  After I read this, I may investigate the Cliff’s Notes for Moby Dick.

Update 11/17/16: Because I’m terrible at source information, I didn’t realize I already follow D.F. Lovett’s blog What Would Bale Do?  So here’s the link to it so you can read more about his new book , follow, and support!

I have watched my shares of Sherlock Homes remakes so when I saw that this was another, I nearly passed it by.  I have Sir Arthur’s original series on my TBR list in classics, though I am of course familiar with the stories.  The lovely review by Kim prompted the add, and I became super excited when I saw the Sherlockian character is a Black guy.  I’m (very obviously) a champion of diversity and flipping the script.  I love when things are genderbent and/or racebent.  Representation is so important, and I was happy to see this wasn’t just a run of the mill modern retelling.  Now that I’m thinking about it, I do have quite a few Sherlock type stories on my list featuring women.

One percentage at a time I’m conquering this mighty compendium, hopefully better than the Irish tried to quell the Island of the Mighty, which has been a major plot point of late.  I probably would’ve read less had not something huge and horrible happened at the end of one chapter involving Branwen and her son by Matholuch who’s a total jackass (Matholuch, not the son).  I don’t want to give too much a way in case you fine people ever decide to read the Tetrology yourself (which I highly recommend you do).

Title: The World of Ice and Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and the Game of Thrones
Author: George R R Martin
Date Added: January 7, 2015
Date Started: February 8, 2015

Media: Hardback
Progress: 82%

I’m still in the (so-called) Free Cities just about to read about Pentos, which probably factors much into the plot of Thrones much more than many think.  It’s the current home of Magister Illyrio Mopatis, a man whose relationship to Varys casts a great deal of suspicion on his rotund form.  There’s a reason Illyrio’s beloved, deceased wife has such an intricate description.  The flames tell me so…

Title: Magonia
Series Title: Magonia
Author: Maria Dahvana Headley
Date Added: January 31, 2016
Date Started: October 1, 2016

Media: Paperback
Progress: 39%

I’m back to being minorly annoyed by this book again.  I detest when characters ask more than reasonable questions and other characters see fit to assume the asking character should know the answer and then refuse to give it to them because of this assumption.  If they’re not giving the answer for other reasons then that’s fine, but the asking character is perfectly correct to be acting the way they are, and the other characters are almost gaslighting her for her behavior, and it’s both frustrating and annoying.

Title: The Ghost of Buxton Manor
Author: Jonathon L. Ferrara
Date Added: August 16, 2016
Date Started: October 17, 2016

Media: Kindle
Progress: 32%

I had a moment with this book today.  Something happened that was really close to things I’ve been thinking about a lot (wow I’m being super vague I know, and it’s not just due to not wanting to give the plot away), but it’s something that’s not too unexpected given it’s a ghost story.  At least more of Rupert’s past has been revealed.

Title: Soulless
Series Title: Parasol Protectorate
Author: Gail Carriger
Date Added: October 26, 2016

A lovely review by Ignited Moth prompted this add, plus I can’t resist good alliteration.  Then the premise itself is intriguing.  A soulless spinster is attacked by a vampire, which apparently breaks all rules of etiquette in this world.  Also one of my favorite authors Patrick Rothfuss also added it to his Goodreads list.  There’s wins all around.

Title: Lotus and Thorn
Author: Sara Wilson Etienne
Date Added: October 28, 2016

This is the second book based on the fairy tale Fitcher’s Brides I have on my list, the first being the titular rendition so linked.  This particular offering has a futuristic setting and a burning question of what really happened to old Earth.  It’s also recommended for fans of Tamora Pierce and Sarah Maas.  I’ve read the latter and have the former’s Throne of Glass on my TBR list.

Title: Double Dead
Series Title: Double Dead
Author: Chuck Wendig
Date Added: October 28, 2016

There are books about vampires.  There are books about zombies.  This is a book about both.  I’m utterly shocked that I’ve never seen one of those before.  How have the two types of undead never had a mixer?  It’s obscene.  Prompted by a review by Cupcakes and Machetes I had to add this for curiosity’s sake alone.  It appears to be a sort of gory humor novel in the same, er, vein as Evil Dead/Army of the Dead.  It sounds thoroughly enjoyable.

Title: The Diabolic
Author: S.J. Kincaid
Date Added: October 28, 2016

Who likes story’s about ruthless, powerful, and unstoppable protectors?  No guesses?  This Shameful Narcissist of course.  They’re the subject and co-protagonist of nearly every story I’ve written so I was ecstatic to see something like this being reviewed by fellow blogger and readaholic Kim at By Hook or By Book.  It’s also a standalone novel, which is rare in this day and age.  Not that I don’t love a good series, but there’s something to be said for an author who can say all they need to in one book.

Title: Alex + Ada
Series Title: Alex + Ada 1-5
Authors: Jonathon Luna & Sarah Vaughn
Date Added: October 28, 2016

Another comic is added to my list with this one, which fellow gaming blogger Cheap Boss Attack praised in his weekly weekend gaming post.  It sounds like a more serious version of Chobits, which I enjoyed (the little of it I saw).

Title: Faller
Author: Will McIntosh
Date Added: October 28, 2016

I know stories about mass amnesia or even just main characters with amnesia are cliche, but they’re still so intriguing.  You want to know what happened in their past and why they’re where they are.  This is the reason they endure.  Hell, one of my story ideas involves amnesia, so I’m not immune to the trope.  By Hook or By Book’s review certainly didn’t hinder my interest in this novel.  What do all of the clue’s Faller finds in his pocket mean and does his odd name have more significance than his leap of faith?

Title: The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia
Authors: Patrick Thorpe, Various Others, and Translators
Date Added: October 30, 2016

One of the fastest adds ever as I was scrolling through my Goodreads feed.  I’m already reading a fictional reference in The World of Ice and Fire, and I’d be more than happy to accept the quest of reading the history of Hyrule next.

Title: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
Series: Harry Potter
Authors: J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne, & John Tiffany
Date Added: October 30, 2016

I had this on my list then I removed it for a couple of reasons that I’m regretting at deeper thought.  One, I read a major spoiler.  I know who the eponymous cursed child is and why they are so.  Two, I read some scathing reviews that said, amongst other things, that it was little more than a fanfiction of Harry Potter.  It wasn’t the fanfiction part that bothered me (of course), but between the spoilers and the almost universal panning, I thought it might not be worth my time, but then after a conversation at the Halloween party I went to this weekend, I thought better of it.  People might be panning it because it’s essentially a fanfiction of HP due to fanfiction stigma, which is infuriating.  It’s even possible that they don’t realize this is the reason for their bias, and if the story were not based on Harry Potter, it might actual be enjoyable to them. Who knows, but that’s how biases often work.  So I figured I’d add it back so that I could read and judge for myself.  I don’t have that “this is fanfiction” bias (obviously) and should be able to give an impartial judgment.

Title: Firstlife
Series: Everlife
Author: Gena Showalter
Date Added: October 31, 2016

I came across the second book while scrolling through my Goodreads feed.  I won’t say I read a spoiler, rather an obvious eventuality.  This book sounds fascinating.  It’s an excepted truth that this life is merely a dress rehearsal before your second, true life, begins, and there are two realms where you could end up.  These kingdoms are rivals and they both want the main character Ten on their side.  Our heroine has been locked in an asylum for over a year because she refuses to allow her parents to decide where she’ll live after she dies.  There’s also a boy involved because this is a YA, and there’s always a love interest, but besides that, the life/death aspect of the story sounds hella interesting.

Title: Norse Mythology
Author: Neil Gaiman
Date Added: October 31, 2016

I’m shocked I didn’t have this added already.  As most of you know I love Norse Mythology and am very lucky that it is a centerpiece in so many of my fandoms (FFVII and ASOIAF to name two).  I’m also a late fan, but a fan nonetheless of Neil Gaiman.  He uses quit a bit of it in his stories and decided to go back to the source.

Title: Bird Box
Author: Josh Malerman
Date Added: November 2, 2016

“Something is out there, something terrifying that must not be seen. One glimpse of it, and a person is driven to deadly violence. No one knows what it is or where it came from.”

When a blurb hooks you, it hooks you.  What is this thing that drives people to violence like Cthulhu drives you to madness?  What’s in the bird box?

I removed a bunch of Charles de Lint Newford books so that I only have one TBR from that series on my list.  When I read that one I’ll add the next.  I’ll probably go through my list at some point again to see if I have any other series I can cut down.

A weekly post updated every Wednesday detailing my current reading projects and where I am with them in addition to what new titles I’ve added to my to-read list.  Title links go to Goodreads to make it easier for interested parties to add any books that might strike their fancy.  I attempt to use the covers for the edition I’m reading, and I’ll mention if this is not the case.  If you have a Goodreads account feel free to friend me!  I’d love to see what you’re reading and/or planning to read.

Title: The Mabinogion Tetralogy
Author: Evangeline Walton
Date Added: August 24, 2014

I can’t stress enough how well written this book is.  While it may take me until this time next year to finish it, I’m enjoying every moment of it.

Title: The World of Ice and Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and the Game of Thrones
Author: George R R Martin
Date Added: January 7, 2015
Date Started: February 8, 2015

Media: Hardback

I’m now on the section about the Free Cities, all “Daughters of Valyria” save for Braavos, which is decidedly not, since it was formed by former Valyrian slaves.  There was a very interesting part about a religious sect known as the Boashi’i, followers of the Blind God Boash.  An essential part of their doctrine was an extreme abnegation of self where a follower would put aside even their own names, speaking of themselves as only “a man” or “a woman” as opposed to “I,” “me,” or “mine.”  Though the cult of the Blind God died out over a thousand years ago, this mode of speech remained (ironically) among the noble classes of Lorath (another one of the nine Free Cities), and it’s how a mysterious character named Jaqen H’ghar (who initially claims to be Lorathi when Arya first meets him) speaks.  Given that he’s a follower of the Many Faced God and given that those followers also eschew their identities, this is not too odd of a coincidence.

I’m totally into this book now. Something major has happened and the point of view has switched.  This answers the question why each chapter had “Aza” next to the number until I reached the current one, which now has “Jason.”  The parallels with The Fault in Our Stars are either lessened or the story has deviated away enough from that where I don’t mind.

This story is frankly both sad and adorable.  You really feel for poor Rupert dying (sorry…) for human contact and how he’s drawn inexplicably to Aaron.

Title: Elric of Melniboné
Series Title: Elric
Author: Michael Moorcock
Date Added: October 21

I watch too many Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire theorists on YouTube, and today I was catching up with one of my favorites (despite some disagreement) Preston Jacobs.  He does several series about the books/show, one of which showcases the difference between book and show.  There have been many an insight garnered from this series and its theorists, not the least of which have been revelations of my own…not necessarily just towards ASOIAF.

Martin has many influences, and in this video, Preston speaks of Michael Moorcock’s Elric series.  I think he’s mentioned him before in regards to GRRM’s obsession with white hair.  Now, I could say a great deal about this, and have in other places, but even if Martin borrowed the idea from Moorcock, it’s legitimately far older, present in Jude-Christian leanings.

Either way, I was intrigued by it and welcome the chance to read classic fantasy that serves as a foundation for what we experience today.

Title: The Metaphysical Detective
Series Title: Riga Hayworth
Author: Kirsten Weiss
Date Added: October 22, 2016

Can murder be committed from beyond the grave?  This novel I randomly found while scrolling through Goodreads asks that question, and I’m intrigued enough to want an answer.  I was also sold on the fact that Riga explores the power of archetypes through the lens of Greek mythology and tarot.  Two things which I’m quite passionate about.

Title: The Clockwork Scarab
Series Title: Stoker and Holmes
Author: Colleen Gleason
Date Added: August 1, 2016
Date Purchased: October 21, 2016
Media Type: Kindle
Price: $1.99

I bought this after receiving a message from Cupcakes and Machetes on Goodreads that it was only $1.99 on Kindle.  Hell yes!  Even if I hate it, I only spent $1.99.  I waste waaaaaaaaaay more money on other things.

Title: The Raven Boys
Series Title: The Raven Cycle
Author: Maggie Steifvater
Date Added: April 21, 2015
Date Purchased: October 24 2016
Media Type: Kindle
Price: $5.99

I had no idea I’d added this book so long ago.  In an attempt to separate the wheat from the chaff (and remove said chaff from my TBR list), I downloaded around 25 samples on my Kindle, and this was one of them.  I have some experience with the author due to her ShiverWhile I didn’t finish it, it’s not an Unfinished and remains on my TBR list.  The book in question is even more intriguing.  The writing is so tantalizing and lush, and I wanted more from the sample I read.  It was only $5.99, which I consider pretty cheap for a book I’m bound to enjoy.
